35. Inside the Cabin

Back outside the cabin...

Liam and Sophie stepped out of the car simultaneously, and Sophie had to keep reminding herself to breathe.

Liam looked to his left and saw Louis' car, which was covered in a mulitude of leaves, pinecones, and acorns from the surrounding trees. It had obviously been parked there for a while. Louis must have come straight here after he had dropped Lilly off at his mum's in Doncaster two weeks ago.

Liam looked over to Sophie and saw that she was standing very rigid, staring up at the cabin. He looked as well, and it was a beautiful home. Two stories, dark wood paneling, large windows. However, all the windows had the curtains drawn to. It didn't even look like there were any lights on...

"Sophie," Liam began cautiously, "are you sure he's even here? I mean..."

"He's here." Sophie said sharply. "I know it."

With that, she slammed the car door shut and began heading towards the front door.

Liam took in a deep breath and closed his door as well. He had to jog to catch up with Sophie before she reached the front door, she was walking so briskly.

As she reached the door and began to go for the door handle impulsively, Liam threw out his arm and blocked her. Sophie looked up at him incredulously and before she could form any words of objection, he very calmly said, "Soph, we can't just go bursting in there. I've seen Louis lose it before, but only once. It was a year or so before he met you." Sophie squinted her eyes and cocked her head to the side in confusion and was going to question Liam further, but he continued on, "It's not important what happened, I'll tell you one day maybe. But what I am going to tell you is that it's not a pretty sight when Louis goes off the deep end. We need to tread carefully in there, okay?"

Sophie pursed her lips and looked up at Liam for a second or two. His expression was firm, and he obviously wanted her to understand the gravity of the situation. When Louis gets genuinely mad or upset over something, he turns into something else, something...animal. Liam had only seen it one time, about five years ago, and he knew he would never forget it.

Finally Sophie nodded her head in understanding. Liam had, after all, known Louis longer than she had. And Louis and her had never really had a major fight before, and she'd never seen him truly mad over anything before. Honestly, she had absolutely no idea what she was walking into.

Liam exhaled and nodded a thank you to Sophie for not being stubborn about this. He turned back to the door and slowly put his hand on the door handle. He tested it gently and saw that it was unlocked. Sophie inhaled sharply and he looked over his shoulder back at her. Her eyes were wide and she quickly lifted them to meet his own.

Then Liam took a deep breath and slowly opened the door.

The smell of alchohol was so strong it was like getting hit with a freight train. There was also the faint burnt cardboard smell of marijuana. Liam took a slow step in and Sophie treaded quietly behind, reaching out and grabbing the back of Liam's tshirt with her fist.

To their left was a living area, and to their right was the dining room. Stairs were straight ahead of them. Sophie gasped and slapped her hand over her mouth when she saw the state of the cabin's interior. It looked like a tornado had whipped through there. Glass was scattered across the floor, chairs were strewn across both rooms. The television in the living area had been smashed in, as was the glass topped coffee table. Beer bottles, whiskey flasks, shot glasses, and various other amounts of empty alchohol containers were scattered everywhere: on the dining room table, on the fireplace mantle, on the floor, on the couches. Louis had effectively torn the place apart.

"Oh my gosh..." Sophie mumbled in astonishment through the hand she was covering her mouth with. She fisted her hand into Liam's tshirt tighter as he took a painstakingly slow step forward. As his foot came back down on the ground, the tense silence was broken by the crunching of glass. Liam cringed at the noise and swore under his breath.

"This is worse than I thought" he whispered over his shoulder to Sophie. She inhaled shakily through her nostrils and held back the tears. She had to maintain her composure for this. She couldn't afford to break down again, not now.

Liam took three more careful steps into the dining room to his right and saw where the marijuana smell was coming from. "Damn you Lou," he muttered almost inaudibly as he saw the used blunts scattered across the table, with the roaches still on them. He glanced back at Sophie and her jaw was dropped in surprise. Tears were threatening to spill over her hazel eyes, and she looked up at him with a mixture of shock and sadness. He opened his mouth to say something, but...there was nothing to say. He just pursed his lips back together and turned away.

Liam moved away from the dining room and led Sophie around the rest of the first level. Each room was much the same; items strewn apart, clothes thrown everywhere, scattered alchohol bottles, etc. Louis was nowhere to be found though.

"He must be upstairs" Liam mumbled and Sophie gulped loudly. He knew she must be terrified, and quite frankly, he was too. He turned around and grabbed the hand that she had been holding onto his shirt with. He enveloped her small hand with both of his large, rough ones and hastily whispered, "Hey Soph, look at me." She did. "You have to remember that this isn't really Louis, okay? This isn't the real him, this is just the upset and hurt Louis. He's not in his right mind right now, but we're going to get him back, alright? We will, I promise. But you have to stay calm and not freak out on me okay?"

Sophie's beautiful hazel eyes were wide in fright and anxiety, but she nodded anyways. Liam exhaled and nodded once back. With that, he turned back around and began to walk up the stairs, with Sophie hot on his tail.

They walked quietly and slowly, listening for any movement upstairs. They heard nothing. When they finally reached the top, Liam looked from left to right. After a couple of seconds he finally decided on checking the right side hallway first, but Sophie reached out quickly and grabbed his arm to stop him. Liam turned around quickly and looked at Sophie questioningly. She said nothing, just shook her head side to side and pointed down the hallway to their left. Liam looked up in the direction she pointed and squinted his eyes to see all the way down the hallway. At the very end, there was a doorway ajar with a small amount of light coming through it.

Liam looked back down at Sophie. She was looking up at him expectantly, wanting him to lead the way. He couldn't believe he was actually doing this. He should be sweeping Sophie off of her feet, taking her far away so that no one could ever hurt her again. Instead, he was helping her get her husband back. For once, he wished he was selfish.

Liam shook the thoughts out of his mind and looked back up towards the cracked door. He grabbed Sophie's hand and quietly began walking down the hallway. There was still no sound throughout the house, even as they got closer and closer to the room where they expected Louis to be.

When they finally reached the door, Liam put the hand that wasn't holding onto Sophie's against the door, his palm flat against it. He took in a deep, calming breath. Then he pushed forward and swung the door open in one fluent motion.

Sophie let out a small screech and squeezed Liam's hand so tightly he thought she was going to break his bones. He took in an involuntary sharp breath. They couldn't believe what they saw.
