Louis Doesn't Have To Know

Sophie Ayers never intended on meeting Louis, yet she was so thankful that she did. He showed her what it was to love, and how it was to BE loved. He healed her broken heart, and did it with that gorgeous smile on his face. But when Danielle and Liam break up and Sophie goes to comfort him, he tells Sophie it was because Danielle suspected him of having feelings for HER...and that his ex girlfriend wasn't wrong. Sophie soon finds herself caught in an addictive web of lies, schemes, and cheating. She falls in love with BOTH One Direction boys, and is unable to choose one over the other. Liam has an idea though: Louis doesn't have to know...right?

39. Have To Know

Three months ago, at Royal London Hospital...

"OH GOD LOUIS, FUCK YOU FOR DOING THIS TO ME!" Sophie screamed as she experienced yet another painful contraction.

Louis just sat in his uncomfortable chair beside her hospital bed and held Sophie's hand, and he was afraid that she might actually broke some bones from squeezing it so tightly. "Come on love, you can do this, just nine more seconds!" he said encouragingly, looking down at his watch. The contractions had been seven minutes apart habitually, and lasted about thirty-five seconds each.

Sophie continued to howl in pain and Louis winced. He hated to see Sophie hurting more than anything in the world.

Finally, the contraction passed and Sophie exhaled in relief, throwing her head back against the pillow and remembering to breathe. "Holy shit" she said breathlessly.

Sweat glistened across Sophie's forehead and Louis stood up to reach for a damp towel the nurse had left for them. As Sophie caught her breath, he dabbed gently, wiping the sweat away from her beautiful face. She looked up at him from underneath her eyelashes and said, "Sorry about that whole...'fuck you' thing I said before."

Louis just laughed and peered down at her. He winked and said, "No hard feelings love. Is there anything I can get you? The nurse said we still have a ways to go..."

He let his sentence trail off as Sophie groaned. She didn't know how much more of this pain she could take.

"I'm sorry babe. I'd take it all for you if I could." Louis said sincerely.

Sophie just looked up at him thoughtfully and said, "Trust me...you wouldn't be saying that if you knew what this felt like," making Louis chuckle. "But I could go for some ice chips maybe...?"

Louis jumped at her request, making a beeline for the door and saying, "I'll be right back, gimme five minutes!" Then he busted out of her private room into the hospital hallway.

Sophie chuckled and leaned her head back against the pillow again. Louis had been so great through this whole pregnancy, helping her in every way possible. She was finally starting to see just how much he really loved her.

Right as Sophie closed her eyes to try and rest for a few minutes before the next contraction decided to attack her body, she heard the door open yet again. She kept her eyes shut and chuckled. "Well that sure was fast. How'd you manage t--"

"It's me, Soph" interrupted a familiar, pain-filled voice.

Sophie's eyes shot open and she stared up at the ceiling. She took in a deep breath and exhaled slowly. Finally, she rolled her head over on the pillow to look at the doorway.

Liam was wearing black windpants and white Nike basketball shoes, with a gray concert tee and a black snapback turned around backwards on his head. His eyes were bloodshot and had purple bags under them; but he had looked like that since she and Louis had gotten engaged, she knew he wasn't sleeping much.

He stared at Sophie, taking in the amazing glow she had about her. Sure, her belly was huge and her hair was matted down with sweat and she wasn't wearing any makeup, but she had this look. She was so...luminous. He couldn't even explain it.

"Hey" she said weakly in an attempt to cut the awkward tension. He cringed at the sound of her voice, filled with so much fatigue and pain. She had been here for four hours now, he knew she must be exhausted. It had been a hard labor and she wasn't even fully dilated yet.

"What, you can't say hey to me anymore?" she said brusquely, and Liam quickly started to move towards her bed saying, "No, I'm sorry, I just..." but then he stopped dead in his tracks, afraid he would overstep his bounds.

Liam looked down at his feet and stuffed his hands in his pockets. They hadn't been alone together since...that night, about ten months ago.

Sophie sighed and looked back up at the ceiling. "What do you want Liam?" she asked bluntly.

"Um..." Liam slowly and carefully stepped around the chair beside the bed and sat down carefully. "Honestly Soph, I-I don't know. I was just sitting out there with the boys a-and I saw Louis leave and I knew I needed to talk to you and..." his sentence trailed off.

Sophie barked out a sarcastic laugh and rolled her head to face him yet again. "Well what is it you need to talk about Payne?" she asked with a very out-of-character hardness to her voice. She must have seen the shock on his face because she quickly recovered, shutting her eyes and shaking her head saying, "I'm sorry, that was really bitchy. I don't know what's wrong with me."

Liam looked down at his lap and chuckled sadly. "It's all good, you sort of have an excuse to be a bitch right now."

Sophie chuckled too and looked back up at the ceiling. After a few seconds it got silent again, and Liam stared at Sophie's beautiful face, which was full of terror and excitement meshed together.

"Sophie...you haven't spoken to me or hardly even looked at me since...since that night." At those words, Sophie inhaled sharply and shut her eyes tight.

"I know Liam, I know. I'm sorry, I just couldn't--"

"Couldn't what?" Liam interrupted. "Couldn't admit that you enjoyed it? Couldn't admit that I made you question your decision in marrying Louis? Couldn't admit that you love me too? Couldn't admit that you cheated on your husband because you actually have f--"

"STOP IT!" Sophie shouted, putting her hands on her temples and shutting her eyes tightly.

Liam got silent.

"I-I'm sorry Soph. I just...you know that I have to know. I have to know if..." his question trailed off and Sophie knew exactly what his question was.

She opened her eyes slowly and looked into his deep brown eyes that even now still had some magical way of captivating her mind, body, and soul. She took a deep breath.

"Sophie," Liam began seriously, "is...is this baby mine?"

Sophie inhaled sharply and held her breath. Five tense seconds passed. Tears began to fall from her eyes like a waterfall.

"I don't know, Liam. I honestly don't know."
