Louis Doesn't Have To Know

Sophie Ayers never intended on meeting Louis, yet she was so thankful that she did. He showed her what it was to love, and how it was to BE loved. He healed her broken heart, and did it with that gorgeous smile on his face. But when Danielle and Liam break up and Sophie goes to comfort him, he tells Sophie it was because Danielle suspected him of having feelings for HER...and that his ex girlfriend wasn't wrong. Sophie soon finds herself caught in an addictive web of lies, schemes, and cheating. She falls in love with BOTH One Direction boys, and is unable to choose one over the other. Liam has an idea though: Louis doesn't have to know...right?

33. Car Ride

Just minutes later, in Liam's car...

As soon as Sophie and Liam had departed Niall's flat, Sophie punched the address to the log cabin where Louis had proposed to her into the GPS. She knew deep down in her gut that he would be there, she didn't how she knew, she just...knew. He wanted to be away from everyone, and the two of them had always referred to the cabin as their "world away from the world", and they went back there for vacation often. If he wasn't there though...well then she would just have to keep looking.

She and Liam had been suffering ten full minutes of awkward silence in the vehicle, and she knew this for certain because she looked at the digital clock on the console about every five seconds. Her knees were tucked up to her chest in the black leather seat and she was fidgeting uncontrollably, biting her nails, rubbing her neck, running her fingers through her hair; anything really just to avoid thinking too much. If she started to think about everything, she would start to worry, then she would start to panic, which she couldn't afford to do.

Liam wanted desperately to say something, but his mind had gone completely blank. Sometimes he would open his mouth to say some words of comfort or encouragement, and Sophie would look up expectantly, but...nothing would come out. He would just purse his lips back together, turn his head back to the road, and grip the steering wheel even tighter.

Finally he just couldn't take it anymore. He hit the steering wheel with the palm of his hand and yelled, "Damn it Sophie it shouldn't be this way!"

Sophie jumped at his outburst and stopped biting her nails to look at him wide eyed and in shock. "W-what?" she stuttered out.

"It shouldn't be like this between us!" he yelled, "It shouldn't be awkward! When we were...together," Sophie couldn't help but flinch at the reminder of her mistake, but he ignored it an went on, "you were more than just the girl I was secretly seeing...you were my best friend. When I lost you as my girl, I lost the person I cared about the most, too. I thought about calling you all the time, not to ask you to come back to me, but just to chat. Whenever I was upset, or sad, or excited, or hopeful about something...I didn't wanna talk to one of the boys, or even my family first. I wanted to tell you. And now I can't even be around you without it being uncomfortable! I don't know, I just..." his voice softened drastically and he glanced at her quickly before turning back to the road, "I just want my best friend back."

Sophie looked down at her knees ashamed. He was right, and she had always known it. She had shunned him for the past two years and whenever they were around each other for some reason or another for a social band function, she avoided him at all costs and never looked at him or even really spoke to him except the stereotypical, "Hi, how are you, oh that's good" kind of thing. But it wasn't as if she hadn't wanted to talk to him or be around him, she had. She was just so afraid that she would fall right back into the deep abyss of cheating and sneaking around.

"Liam, I'm so sorry," she whispered, "I never meant to hurt you I just...I was afraid you hated me because I hated me so much."

Liam furrowed his brow, he hadn't expected that kind of response at all. Did she really hate herself? Was she really so ashamed of having chosen Louis over him? Maybe there was something still there...or maybe he was just reading too much into it again.

"Oh Sophie love," Liam said soothingly, reaching a hand over to grab hers. "I could never hate you, never in a million years. Even though things didn't exactly turn out in my favor, I could never hate you. I just want you to be happy. But I also want you to share that happiness with me, does that make sense?"

Sophie nodded sadly and squeezed his hand tight. "Yeah, it does make sense. From now on, it'll be different. I promise." She took a slight pause. "You know you're my best friend too, right?"

Liam smiled and glanced over at her quickly. "Yeah babe, I know. But don't tell Niall that, he'll think I stole his title." With that, Liam threw her a cheeky wink and Sophie threw her head back in laughter. It was so easy with Liam, even though she was miserable on the inside, he somehow managed to make her laugh. How is that?

Sophie stopped laughing, but the smile didn't leave her face. She looked down at her hand, which was entertwined with Liam's.

"Hey," she said, "there's no electricity...?" Her odd statement trailed off into almost a question.

As Liam looked away from the road and over to Sophie's face, he saw that she was staring at their hands. Her head was cocked to the side in a cute, sort of confused way. He looked down as well and realized what she was talking about.

Up until that exact moment, there had always been tingles that ran through her body whenever they touched. She had talked about it often. Whether it was a hand graze, a hug, a kiss, a caress...it was always there. And now, it wasn't.

At least not for her.

Sophie looked up at him with her mouth slightly parted and her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Obviously she thought it was gone for the both of them. Telling her that he still felt those tingles would make her feel so bad, he couldn't stand to cause her any more pain than she was already feeling.

Liam reached a red light and stopped completely before looking back at her. She reiterated, "Liam, the electricity is gone."

Liam sighed and chuckled sadly. "Well I guess...I guess we're finally growing up."

=======================================================

For the rest of the drive, which took about forty five minutes, the former lovers reminisced over old times together to keep from discussing the upcoming situation, which they both knew was bound to be intense.

"Hey do you remember the time that we were performing in America, I think it was the Take Me Home tour, and you actually jumped from your outside balcony to mine at one o'clock in the morning?" Liam asked with a huge grin on his flawless face.

Sophie threw her head back and laughed, "Oh my gosh yes, I completely forgot about that! How high up were we?"

"Like the seventh or eighth floor!"

Sophie's eyes widened as she remembered how terrifying that had been. She had been teasing Liam all that day, saying she would do it, and he hadn't taken it seriously. They had been seeing each other in secret for about eight months at that point, and Sophie had become seriously addicted to the adrenaline rushes involved with it. When she had cleared the three or four feet of open air between the balconies that, she had never been so exhilerated in her life...she missed it sometimes.

Sophie kept smiling and shook her head, "That was so much fun" she said in a far away dreamy voice.

Liam looked at her as if she were crazy. "That was so incredibly stupid, you mean?"

Sophie rolled her eyes at him whilst still grinning and mumbled an almost inaudible, "Whatever."

Liam chuckled and for the next couple of minutes they continued to talk about all of their crazy times together:

"Remember when we went skinny dipping in Spain and almost got caught by those paps?"

"Or the time that I accidentally pulled a stage hand into a broom closet backstage at a concert because I thought it was you? That poor kid was traumatized!"

"Oh and the time we all had that big house party at Zayn's place and the next morning when Niall stepped out of the shower, I ripped his towel off while you shoved him out the door and locked it?"

Sophie was laughing so hard now that she was actually snorting a little bit, but she didn't care and neither did Liam. He actually loved hearing it, he hadn't heard her laugh like that in almost a year. He used to make her laugh so much, when they were together. Gosh it felt like ages ago...

At this point they were about thirty five minutes into the drive and Sophie had almost forgotten their whole purpose in the journey. The GPS was kind enough to remind her though, as its robotic voice sounded off, "Turn left. Your destination is five minutes ahead on the right."

The laughter stopped suddenly, as did the smiles. The car became silent and dead as their destination loomed over Sophie and Liam. Sophie's palms became sweaty and she started to tremble a bit. What was she going to say to Louis? She hadn't prepared a speech, or anything really.

"L-Liam, what am I going to say?" she asked.

Geez, she's terrified. Liam thought to himself.

Sophie seemed so small all of a sudden, scared that her life was going down the drain. He wouldn't let that happen though, he was going to make that pained look leave her face. He vowed to himself right then and there that if Louis wouldn't listen to them, he would find a way to make him understand. For Sophie's sake though, not Louis'.

"Just tell him the truth Sophie." Liam said encouragingly, "Just explain that yes, we were together at one point, but it's...over, and..." Sophie saw him cringe beside her and she yearned to reach out to him. He had to take a deep calming breath before continuing so that he wouldn't get upset. "and you want to be with him, not me. Just apologize. You can't change the past, but you can determine the rest of your future."

Sophie gazed upon Liam's face as he said all this, and she could've sworn that she saw a tear roll down his cheek. He made no motion to wipe it away, either.

She didn't say anything in reply, just turned away from him and looked out the front window yet again. A tense silence settled upon them as they descended the now gravel road.

Sophie inhaled sharply as she saw the cabin materialize through the thick trees. The area was beautiful, and it brought back so many amazing memories with Louis.

Liam gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. This was where Louis had proposed to Sophie, among other...things. That had been the hardest part about being in a band and being friends with Louis while he had been seeing Sophie. Louis loved to talk about his and Sophie's...intimate relationship. That was actually how Liam had learned about their engagement two years ago. Not from Sophie, but from Louis...

"Well boys," Louis had said smugly the day that he and Sophie returned from their week long vacation in the woods, "I had a lovely vacation, how about you?" He gave them all a cheeky wink and Zayn, Harry, and Niall had laughed, knowing exactly what Louis was implying. Liam struggled to maintain his composure and not show the pain on his face.

"Ohhh yes," Louis continued, plopping down in a chair and putting his hands behind his head. "It was quite lovely. And then to make things even more lovely..." he took a long pause, and all the boys waited expectantly (that is, except Liam). "I finally did it, boys. I proposed."

Liam's heart stopped.

"Are you serious mate?!" Niall asked loudly, his jaw dropped.

"Well what did she say?" Zayn asked enthusiastically.

Louis just scoffed. "What the hell do you think she said Zayn? She said yes of course!"

Liam's heart cracked.

Zayn, Harry, and Niall all shouted and tackled Louis in a big hug. "We're so happy for you mate!" "It took you long enough!" "I call dibs on the best man!"

Liam was still frozen in his seat, staring at the scene. Sophie was...engaged? To be married? No...it couldn't be...she was supposed to choose him! He had done everything right, he had been perfect to her, he had proved over and over again that he loved her more! Sophie was engaged. That damn promise ring was gone, but it was replaced with a diamond. Was this really happening?

Suddenly Louis threw his fist up in the air and shouted, "Hell yeah! I'm fucking getting married boys! Goodbye Sophie Ayers, hello Sophie Tomlinson!"

Liam's heart broke.

Liam out of the room and threw up for two hours straight. The boys said it was probably just a stomach bug.

That had probably been the worst day of his life. And now here he was, at the place where it all started, so that he could help Sophie get Louis back. How fucked up could he possibly be?

Liam pulled the car over beside the cabin, put it in park and turned off the ignition. He looked over at Sophie and saw that she was staring out the window, her beautiful hazel eyes wide in terror. She was biting her nails to the quick.

Liam reached a hand over and grabbed Sophie's to make her stop biting her nails. She whipped her head around in surprise, as if she had forgotten he was there.

"Hey." he said seriously, "It's going to be alright. We're going to do this together, okay?"

Sophie nodded, but still looked terrified.

"Come on, let's go."

With that, he opened the car door and stepped out.
