23. "Always"

Same day, 11:03 p.m.:

Sophie smiled in spite of herself as she walked down the street from Louis' flat to Liam's. Just two or so months ago, she had been doing this exact same thing in almost the same setting. The only difference between then and now was that it was a few degrees warmer, and that two months ago she hadn't been a lying bitch who was cheating on her boyfriend with his best friend.

Sophie shook those depressing thoughts out of her head and looked at the ground, shoving her hands in her pockets and walking briskly. She was wearing jeans and a tanktop with one of Louis' hoodies on, the strings tied at the middle like he always had them. She also had on one of his red beanies, making her wavy blonde hair cascade across her shoulders.

After Sophie's encounter with Liam in Louis' room, followed soon after by a delightful encounter with Louis in the shower, the day had actually been quite normal. She had explained to Louis that she didn't want anything too extravagant for her birthday, and surprisingly, he complied. He did, however, take her out shopping for the day, then to a nice dinner where he presented her with a promise ring, which she obviously accepted. It was simple, and she was so glad to have been able to just spend the day with him, all to herself. It was nice, like how things were back in New York when they were first getting to know each other.

Her thoughts kept drifting back to Liam though, no matter how desperately she tried to push them away. She knew she shouldn't go over to his flat that night, but she couldn't help it. He was like a drug to her. She felt like a junkie.

Sophie had made sure that she and Louis made it back to his flat around nine o'clock, so that they could have some "special time" together up in his bedroom before she made a stealthy escape to Liam's. Louis was notorious for falling into a deep sleep after they had sex more than one time, and she wasn't worried about that, knowing he wanted to mix things up since it was her birthday. He had rocked her world those three times, and she knew that she should stay in his arms and fall asleep to the sound of his breathing. Deep down inside though, at the most selfish part of her mind, she knew she wouldn't do it. She had to go see Liam.

So at precisely five minutes until eleven, Sophie snuck out of Louis' bed like a professional.

And now she was on the street, walking to Liam's at a brisk pace. She couldn't help but be excited to see him, especially after what happened while Louis was in the shower. That was so different and exotic for her, the way he took control. Would sex be like that whenever they--

Woah, no more thinking like that! Sophie literally stopped in her tracks for just a second at that thought. She wasn't going to have sex with Liam, she couldn't! Although...it would surely be amazing. He would never hurt her, he would be tender and caring, and caress her lovingly, and--

Sophie's mental picture faded as she realized she was already at Liam's doorstep. She took in a deep, calming breath and gently knocked on the door.

There wasn't an answer, and she knocked again. She got the same result. Testing the handle cautiously, Sophie realized it was unlocked. She opened it and stepped halfway into Liam's home.

"Liam? It's Soph..." she called out to the house. A second or two of eerie silence passed through the massive flat and she called out again, "Liam, are you--"

"I'm upstairs!" Liam suddenly shouted, making Sophie jump. She was already nervous enough, and that had just made things worse. She inhaled deeply yet again and stepped all the way into the home, checking the street behind her for anyone who might have seen her go in before closing the door.

"Come on up!" Liam yelled through the house again and his voice sounded like it was upstairs and to the right...where his bedroom was located.

Sophie nervously made her way over to the stairs and began walking upstairs slowly and carefully. Her hand trembled on the white railing, and butterflies started raging in her stomach.

As she reached the top step, she froze. She could hear soft music playing to the right.

"Liam?" she called out.

Suddenly the door to Liam's bedroom flung open and she jumped in fright once again. Liam stuck his torso out and she saw that he was grinning at her.

"Well hello there beautiful. You're late, I was worried you weren't going to come" he poked his lip out in mock disappointment and Sophie giggled a little bit.

Liam just widened his grin and stepped out of the room and walked over to her, still at the top of the stairs about eight or nine steps away from his bedroom.

"Well come on then, don't just stand there!" He grabbed her hand and entertwined their fingers, and all her nervousness melted away. His hand wasn't warm like Louis', but it was something else. It was...loving.

As he pushed open the door to his bedroom with his free hand and led Sophie in, she let out a gasp. His room was illuminated with a deep red tint, since he had red mood lamps in every corner of the room. Soft piano music was playing from his high tech stereo. His bed was massive, with a thick black comforter. There were two different kinds of guitars propped up in one corner of the room, and a piano on the other side as well, with scattered sheet music on it. They were paintings and pictures on the walls, and a few framed awards. On his bookshelf he had his trophy awards on display. In all the times she had been over to his flat, even when they were just friends, she had never seen his bedroom. It was breathtaking though.

Liam chuckled at her and squeezed her hand as he led her over to the window seat on the opposite side of the room. She kept craning her neck and looking around at the room in awe. As he sat her down on the window seat she finally looked at him and felt as though she might melt.

His short hair had started to grow back finally and it was pushed up in the front. There was some stubble on his chin and cheeks, and his deep brown eyes were twinkling in the light. He was smiling wide at her, seeming so genuinely happy to see her. This made Sophie smile as well.

They were sitting very close, she had her legs pulled up and tucked beside her, and he had one leg on the ground and the other pulled up beside him. Their torsos were facing each other.

Suddenly Liam looked at the top of her head and frowned. Her smile faded as well and she heard herself ask, "What's wrong?"

Liam just looked back down to her and sighed, putting on a meek smile, with his lips closed. "Nothing, it's just that you're wearing his..." he let his sentence trail off and he looked back to the top of her head, suddenly reaching a hand up and pulling off Louis' red beanie softly. He tossed it in a nearby chair and turned back to her, smiling again. "There, that's better", he murmured.

Sophie just looked at him sadly, and he reached his hand up again to smooth out her hair gently. The tingles immediately shot from his touch all the way down to her toes, and she held her breath. He looked from her hair back down to her eyes and she was sure that he was going to kiss her. Instead though, he dropped his hand and said, "Guess what".

She rolled her eyes, making him laugh in his own adorable way, where his eyes squint up adorably. "What?" she asked finally.

"I got you something" he replied, turning around and reaching under one of the pillows on the window seat they were sitting on. He pulled out a small red box and handed it to her.

She accepted it, albeit reluctantly.

"Liam, I know it's my birthday and all, but you really didn't have to--"

"I know I didn't have to Soph, but I wanted to. Please just open it. For me?" His puppy eyes pleaded with her and she exhaled before opening the box.

Inside was a simple yet gorgeous silver braclet, with four diamond studs around it, and a small heart shaped charm. The charm was engraved with the word, "Always" in eloquent cursive writing. It too, had a diamond on the backside of it. It was absolutely gorgeous.

"Oh my gosh, Liam..." she gasped and covered her mouth in surprise.

"Here, let me" he said, taking the braclet out of the box and gently pulling her right hand in his lap. He clasped the braclet effortlessly, without saying anything else. He put the charm in between his thumb and forefinger, and flipped it over a few times mindlessly.

Suddenly Liam looked up and took Sophie's chin in his hands gently, but firmly enough to let her know that he wanted her undivided attention for what he was about to say.

"Sophie, you mean the world to me. You're the person I think of first when I see something beautiful, or hear something interesting. Not a day goes by that I don't wake up thinking about you or fall asleep dreaming of you. You're my everything. And even though your heart will never belong to me like mine belongs to you...I'll always be here. When you want to talk, when you want to cry, when you want to shout out to the world with joy, I'll be here no matter what. I may never have your whole heart, but you have every single bit of mine. Now, and always."

The tears were streaming silently down Sophie's face at this point, and Liam watched them fall.

"Sophie...I love you".

Sophie closed her eyes tight and shook her head, sobs beginning to rock her body. Liam wrapped his arms around her and pulled her in a tight embrace. She latched on to him as if her life depended on it, her hands fisting in his shirt and her face burrowed in his chest. She was staining his shirt but he didn't care.

"I l-love you t-too" she managed to stutter out and Liam bit his lip to hold back a tear. He knew that her words were true, she did love him...but she loved Louis more. She would always love him more. The lucky bastard didn't know how fortunate he was.

"I know you do babe...I know."

He pulled her body back then and kissed her lips softly. He didn't even try to deepen the kiss, he just pressed his mouth against hers. She needed love and comfort, not passion.

After a second or two he pulled away, but kept her face in his hands, resting his forehead against hers.

"Promise me something Sophie."

"Don't you ever take that braclet off. If anyone asks, you bought it on a shopping trip, you didn't get it from me. And everytime you start to feel upset, or you feel like your life is missing something, you look at that braclet. You look at that charm, and you read what it says. Remind yourself that I'll always be in the background; that I'll always care for you; that your dreams are my dreams, and I'm here supporting you in everything you do. Always."

Sophie nodded vigorously and he kissed her softly again.

"Liam?" she whispered against his mouth after a few seconds.

"Yes, love?"

"Take me to bed."

Liam pulled his head back in surprise and looked at her. "Are you sure?"

She fisted her hand in the front of his shirt and pulled his face close to hers again. "Positive" she said darkly.

Liam didn't hesitate in scooping her up bridal style and carrying her to his king sized bed. He was going to show her just how much he loved her. He was going to be slow, loving, and thorough. As he laid her down on the mattress, their lips just hovered over each other, the sexual tension popping between them dangerously.

"Soph...are you one hundred percent sure you want to do this? Because if you tell me no, or if you want me to stop, I will. You know that right?"

Sophie leaned her head back to look up at Liam looming over top of her, looking extremely sexy with his smoldering eyes, long eyelashes, and defined jawline.

She took in a deep breath and cursed herself for saying:

"...Louis doesn't have to know..."

With that, they made love.

Liam let the tears fall shamelessly when he saw the promise ring on her left hand.
