13. Chapter 12

The vivid memories shattered the barrier and swarmed into my mind. The green grass, the scared blonde boy with the bright blue eyes laying on the ground writhing in pain, the blood, the screaming, the broken promises, the crying, the sirens, the beeping, the flatline. It was all too much, for the first time in ages the memory was at the front of my mind. It seemed as real now, as it had back then.

I shrunk into a ball, gripping my legs for support. The tears streamed down my face. I felt like the ground was going to swallow me up and then the pain would be over. I should have known better. All at once, like some-one flicking a switch, the pain was gone and all that was left was numbness. I knew the new feeling was only temporary and soon enough the memory would come back.

I took a deep breath, trying to regain control over myself. I managed to stop the tears, but the violent shuddering of my body I couldn't help at the moment. The world around me came back into focus, and after a couple of minutes I could move again. I got up, careful not to make any sudden movements in case my body couldn't handle it. When I was standing, i took a look around. The bright blue sky, was still the same bright blue colour, but everything had an eery feeling about it. I slowly crept out of the bush and started walking along the footpath. I had a long walk ahead of me, and I prayed the boys wouldn't find me. Especially in this state.

I followed the pathways, stopping occasionally to check where I was. It was unnecessary, but I did it anyway. I watched my feet mostly, as I walked in silence.

"Hey Kai"

I turned at the sound of my childhood nickname and met a pair of jade green eyes.

"Natalie" I said, a small smile forming on my lips.

"What's up? You look like shit" She asked, a taunting smile forming across her lips.

"Thanks" I said sarcastically.

"Your welcome" she said tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder.

This was how it had always been with us. We were comfortable with each other. We could talk about anything. She fell in step with me and I explained everything.

"Oh my god, they went after Peter?" she exclaimed.

"Yeah" I said sheepishly.

"I can't believe you ran, I mean I understand why, but they were only trying to help you" She said giving me a sympathetic smile.

"I know, but I can't change things now" I said.

"True" she replied.

We walked in silence for a while before she asked me where I was going.

"To see Em, we're gonna call Kevin" I said, pulling a face.

"Come on, it's been two years, you have to talk about it sometime"

"It's not about that" I replied, blinking back tears as the memory flashed before my eyes.

"then what's it about?" she asked.

I slipped my phone out of my pocket and showed her the messages and the wallposts. "I'm finding out why"

"Oh, that bastard. He shouldn't say those things" she said.

"I know, but there has to be a reason. I just don't know yet" I replied.

We continued walking, making small talk along the way. I felt so much better having one of my best friends with me and knowing I can see my other one soon. I just dreaded the phone call I was going to make.
