Chapter 1

Karla’s P.O.V.

I sit there, in the corner of my empty room covering my small ears, a singular tear escaping my eye and rolling down my cheek. Only separated by a  wall I can still hear the yells, cries and desperation in Mum’s every word. Why did Dad come over in the first place? He knows we were moving houses, why did he have to come over and try and change Mums mind, it’s over between them? And then I hear it, a shrill blood curling scream I will always remember. I stand up and without thinking run into Mums room, my body now shaking in terror as I see mum on the ground and Dad in the corner rubbing the back of his neck tears streaming from his eyes and down his stubbly chin.

“It’s not what it looks like Karla, I’m-” I cut Dad off and scream with my words coming out slurred and shaken.

“Get out! Look at her you, you idiot!” I just stand there frozen in time confused and stunned not knowing what to do.

“I’m sorry Karla, just don’t call the police… sorry” Dad says as he runs out the house with no where to go.

“K-Karla.” I get washed from my thoughts by Mum’s soft cry and I run to her side cradling her limp body in my delicate arms stroking hair of her face and telling her everything was going to be alright.

I can already see the purple bruising starting to form on Mum’s cheeks and chest with multiple gashes on her forehead.  I quickly dial in 112 and get put through to the ambulance department.

“Hello, what is your problem today?” says the voice on the other end.

“U-um my Mum she’s been hurt really badly by my Dad and she’s almost unconscious, I don’t know what to do.”

“Ok hun, what I want you to do is check for a pulse, Ok?” Moments later I finally find the beat of Mums pulse feeling relieved.

“Y-yeah there is a pulse…” I say now unsure to whether I did it properly, serves me right for not paying attention in class at important moments.

“Ok hun, we are sending out an ambulance now and they will be there shortly. I want you to stay calm and to stay at your Mum’s side the whole time, Ok?”

“Ok.” I reply quickly and hang up.

5 minutes later the ambulance arrives and places Mum on a stretcher before being rushed off to hospital and I’m yet again  sitting in my empty room in a harsh state of mind.
