The Girl Code

There's strict rules a girl has to follow; a law lay down by females galore.
Some groups of girls are more flexible than others, but in Aly's group the code must be stuck to, no "if's", "but's", or "please's" about it.
So what will happen when she bends the rules?
Will she face brutal consequences of the devine girl nation?

“Aly, hurry up and decide!” Melouise half yelled through the dressing room door.

“I’ve told you Mel, a decision this big is way too hard to make within your time scale. Give me another five minutes at least.” I giggled as she groaned. I heard a thud a minute later and I presumed she’d slumped her body down hard onto the little plastic chair just outside the dressing room.

Three more, if you’re not out by then I’ll be coming in to drag you by the hair to the till.” She sulked and I rolled my eyes pulling the fabric shirt back onto my body, fingering the buttons into place.

“Okay, I’m done. I’m done.” I clutched the two garments I’d been contemplating between for the past hour in my hands, and slipped my handbag back on my shoulder, unlocking the door and shimmying out into the open.

“Finally!” she groaned, standing up. “Which one, then?”

“Um… both.” I grinned wide and she gaped at me.

“Excuse me? You mean you just wasted an hour of my life that I can’t get back to then choose to purchase both dresses?”

“Well, yes. I couldn’t choose either over the other.”

“I hate you.” she grumbled, grabbing my wrist and pulling me towards the shop assistant at the till. “Pay right now before my stomach eats itself.”

I pulled my wrist from hers and slipped down another aisle created by the clothing rails. Picking up a butterfly print chiffon, I held it up for quick inspection before waving it in front of her face.

“Oh, what about thi-”

“No! Pay.” She growled, taking the chiffon off me and hanging it back on the rail as I smirked.

“Somebody’s grouchy.” I said placing the two dresses I desired onto the counter top, smiling falsely at the girl across from me.

“What do you expect? I haven’t been fed for ages and you dragged me around this bloody mall all day looking for a dress.”

“If I remember correctly it was your idea to come here, plus, you love shopping.”

“Yes, when I’m filled with food and not on my period.” She whined, glaring at the ginger girl who was taking forever to scan the items. “Hurry it up, would you?” she snapped.

The girl - ‘Kait’, her tag read - jumped in surprise, her little eyes wide and scared.

“Mel!” I scolded. “I’m really sorry about her.” I apologised to the girl, she nodded slowly and pressed a few keys on the till making the cash tray spring out.

“Thirty-five dollars, please.” She mumbled, handing me a bag.

I pulled the notes out my purse and handed her them in exchange for the bag.

“Here’s your receipt, have a, uh… good day.” She smiled uncertainly and I returned the favour, taking the receipt.

“You too.”

Melouise and I exited the little boutique and headed back into the wide mall corridor, her face still sporting a grimace.

“Can we eat now?” she asked like a child, her eyes pleading.

I laughed and nodded pointing to McDonalds. “Happy meal?”

Her face lit up and she nodded eagerly. “Happy meal. Happy meal. Happy meal.”

“God,” I grinned, “C’mon then.”

The greasy guy with matted hair and a grubby shirt, at least in his twenties, stared at us expectantly.

“Chocolate milkshake and a chicken nugget happy meal, please.” I ordered and looked at Melouise, “What are you having?”

“Uh, same as you but with a strawberry milkshake.” She smiled.

“We don’t serve happy meals to those over the age of ten.” The man muttered, staring at us as if we had both grown several more heads each.

“I’m sorry, what?” Melouise’s voice was sharp.

“I said, we don’t serve happy meals to those over the age o-”

“I heard you, imbecile!” she yelled drawing attention to us.

“Please don’t call me that, I’m just following the rules.”

“I don’t care about your stinking rules, give me a bloody happy meal, imbecile.” I placed a hand on her shoulder and she inhaled deeply before letting her breath out again. “Please?” she strained.

“I’m sorry, Miss, we don’t serve happy meals to those under the age of ten.”

“I want to speak to your manager.” Melouise snarled darkly, her eyes the size of tennis balls as she glared at him.

“I, uh, one second, Miss.” He scurried towards the back of the kitchen area and came straight back with a tired looking man, hair starting to grey at the edges.

“Hello, Miss, how can I help?” he forced a smile and I stifled a laugh.

“Look Mr Conor,” Melouise snapped leaning forward and grasping the manager’s shirt in her hands tightly. “Me and my friend have just been refused a happy meal each for being over the age of ten.”

His adams apple bobbed unevenly in his throat and I could tell her felt awkward.

“Well, Miss, I do apologise, only we don’t generally expect to get customers older than ten who choose to purchase happy meals.”

“So, you put an age limit on them?”

“Well, I guess-”

“So you’re discriminating against us and anyone else who may feel they want a happy meal but are over the age limit?”

I stared at Melouise, biting my lip to keep from laughing, looking around I could see a lot of interest was being made from her performance and it was even funnier when mumbles of agreement were being made.

---

“I can’t believe you did that.” I said, chewing on a fry.

Melouise shrugged and grinned wide, nibbling her chicken nuggets. “Well, we got a free meal each.”

I shook my head, laughing lightly as I did so. “And that’s all that matters.”

“Exactly!”

“So what do you want to do next?” I raised an eyebrow and her face scrunched up in thought.

“How about we grab a movie from HMV and then go back to mine to watch it? We’ll invite the girls and we can chow down on chocolate all night.”

“All night? I wasn’t aware we were celebrating?” I smirked.

Melouise shook her head holding up two fingers whilst taking a quick sip of her strawberry milkshake. She swallowed and cleared her throat before smiling again.“Rule number two of The Girl Code, chocolate is an accepted food in any occasion.”
