4. Chapter Four

Carter, Zack, Chris and I all look on as Harper walks through the front door, and is shocked into silence as a bucket of oil tips onto him, as if in slow motion. It's followed by a second bucket, this one containing pink feathers. I can’t take it anymore and burst out laughing.

“OHMIGAWD!” I gasp for breath as Harper stands there spluttering, mouth gaping like a fish, now resembling a pink feathered chicken.

The others start laughing at Harper, and they all give me high fives.

“Priceless!” Zack chortles. “Dude, you just got owned!

Chris lets go of me, as does Carter. Harper’s slowly going beet red.

“Maya!” He growls, charging at me. Quick as a flash, I dart out of his way and shake my finger at him.

“Dear dear me.” I tut. “We really need to keep that anger of yours in check, don’t we now?”

We all start laughing even harder at his expression, and it echoes around us. “Told you I’d get you back!” I chuckle, shaking my head at Harper. “Did you really think that I’d forget?”

“I’m. . . I’m . .. I’m all pink!” Harper stutters. “And feathery!”

“No crap Sherlock.” Zack sniggers.

“Hey!” I cry. “I’m Sherlock, not him. He’s to. . .. chicken like to be Sherlock.”

“What is going on in here?” A voice thunders from behind us, and I wince, turning around.

“Hi Dad.”

He narrows his eyes, looking down his nose at me. He’s dressed in his usual attire; a white button down shirt, black trousers, black tie and jacket, with a pair of leather shoes. His black hair is styled back, and he’s wearing his reading glasses.

“What did you do this time Malaya?” He sighs, looking at Harper. Is that a little amusement I see twinkling in the corner of his eye?

“Oi!’ I say indignantly. “What did I do? Why do you always assume that it’s me?”

“Was it you?” He asks, raising his eyebrow.

“Yes.” I admit.

“My point exactly Malaya.”

“Maya Dad, it’s Maya.” I growl. “And stop being so right all the time.”

He shakes his head. “Malaya, stop being so childish. Harper, go and clean yourself up, I’ll get someone else to take the others to school.”

Harper shakes his head, and walks past me, muttering under his breath. I shrink back from him, smirking slightly.

“Toodle oo Harper!” I call, waving. “Have fun!”

“Malaya.” Dad warns, and I stop waving with a sigh.

Fine. I'll leave him alone.”

He turns back to the others with a satisfied air. “There will be a limousine waiting outside in 15 minutes.”

They all groan. “Again?” Zack asks. “Seriously Dad, we don’t need a limo.”

He ignores him and walks back to his study. When he’s gone, I jump in a rare moment of girlish excitement.

“We get to arrive in a limo?!"

When we arrive at school, everyone looks and points at us.

“Great, just another day in paradise.” Chris mutters, and I elbow him with a grin.

“Pur-lease Chrissicals, you secretly love it. Gets you all the ladies.” I say with a grin.

Chris shrugs. “Whatever works.”

I shake my head ruefully and stare out the window. It was not secret that my brothers were hot; the whole female population thought so. The triplets were killers with their blonde hair and green twinkling eyes; they worked out a lot too, and I suspected that they all had abs. Chris was a similar body shape to them, with hair the same colour as mine, mahogany, and the twinkling green eyes, which was the only similar characteristic we had with the triplets. When we were younger people used to identify us by our green eyes; they always knew it was a Ryder when they saw the eyes twinkling impishly as we hightailed it outta there with the pie that we stole.

Ever since I was 5 years old and the triplets had their first female admirers, I've known that my brothers were hailed as 'Greek Gods' by the female population, and trust me, arriving in a limo did not do anything good for said females.

Smirking, I step out of the limo with my aviators on, and proceed to wave at nobody in particular. I hear a few people laugh, and smile to myself. Yes, I am indeed the awesomest person to eve-

"CHRIS!" I bellow as I smack the pavement in front of me. "Seriously dude, why do you feel the need to do that?"

He sends me a smug look and places a foot on my back.

"I hereby declare this land Chrismania. May you now all bow down to me." He announces to everyone. I literally hear a few girls do what he asks, and I resist the urge to face palm.

"Christofer let me up!" I shriek at him, kicking my legs up and landing a few good hits on him. Scowling, he lets me up immediately.

"Don't you ever call me that again in public!" He hisses, and I smirk at him.

"What did you say Christofer?" I ask, cupping my ear. "I'm not quite sure I heard what you said Christofer."

He whacks me around the head. "Oops, sorry Malaya." He smirks.

"Ok, ok, ok." I say hurriedly. "No need to bring out the big guns here, I'll stop."

He beams at me, "That's my girl."

A blonde haired bimbo slinks up to him and blinks seductively.

"I think that your name is adorable." She purrs at him, and he glares at me hotly. Laughing, I wave at him and leave him with the girl.

"Have fun twin!" I call over my shoulder, and I see the girl rub herself all over him like a dog on heat as soon as she sees me leaving, with Chris looks slightly pained at her antics. I rub my face furiously when I see her. Seriously, does she not know that I'm right here! Snorting, I walk up the steps to school and brace myself for yet another day of torture.

"Beg for mercy." I grin at Harper, my hands full of pink cookie dough. He stares at me in horror and shock as the rest of the class cracks up.

"Miss this is not your class!" The young teacher scolds me sternly. "I would kindly advise you to leave before I give you detention."

Ignoring her, I stalk up to Harper with an evil grin on my face.

"Maya don't you dare." He warns hastily, grinning despite himself. "If you even think- MAYA!!"

Cackling, I sprint from the classroom with Harper hot on my heels, the pink wet dough spilling down the front of his t-shirt, and the teacher yelling at us to STOP!. I crank on the speed, bordering on the edge of supernatural, but not really caring at the moment, my only aim; to get the heck away from my raging brother. Slipping around the door, I skid into my classroom, and grin to the 20 inquisitive looks sent my way.

"Miss Ryder, where on earth have you been?" Mrs Berth snaps at me, her brown eyes widening in shock at the sight of Harper appearing in the doorway with a red face.

"Maya!" He bellows, ignoring the teacher's gasp of surprise and shock. Stalking up to Cody, he grabs a handful of his cookie dough, which is thankfully the normal tan colour, and throws it at me. Squealing, I duck behind Mrs Berth, and it hits her smack in the face.

"Oops." Harper gulps, giving the teacher a sheepish grin. "Sorry Miss, but it had to be done."

Her face goes a deep shade of red, and the vein on the side of her neck throbs.

"TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE!" She shrieks, throwing her arm in the door's direction. "NOW!"

Laughing, I grab my bag, the rest of Cody's dough, much to his obvious annoyance, and out the door. When the classroom is out of sight, I ruffle Harper's hair, spreading the dough far and wide.

"MAYA!" He groans, glaring at me, before cracking into a grin. "We are in it deep."

We're sent in to the waiting area next to the principal's office by his unamused deputy. I jiggle my leg impatiently, looking up at the clock on the wall. As much as I love bunking off school for being in trouble, I really wanted to get outta here; this place gives me the heeby-jeebies.

The door to the principal's office opens with a creak and a slim woman slides through and looks at us with raised eyebrows. Her blonde hair is done up in a tight bun and her grey eyes flash at us.

"Mr Ryder, what have you done this time hmm?" She asks, and Harper sinks further into his seat. Wait, what?

Then she notices me, and I straighten up. Theres no way in heck that this chick is gonna intimidate me.

"And who is your friend?" She asks my brother, and he pales slightly.

I raise my eyebrows. "Who wants to know?"

She snaps her gaze to me, and I resist the urge to cringe away from her.

I don't trust her. My wolf quips up, and I have to agree with her. This lady just gives me the heebie-jeebies.

She narrows her eyes slightly. "Why, I do. Allow me to introduce myself." I resist the urge to say Don't bother, and instead bite my lip to stop the words from leaking out.

"My name is Principal Wilson." She says, smiling, though it doesn't reach her cold eyes. "And you are. . ?"

I stand up and bow mockingly at her. "Maya Ryder at your service." I chirp before sitting down again. Harper sighs quietly next to me.

"Well, Miss Ryder." Principal Wilson says. "We've been expecting you."

I try not to shudder. Wow, way to win me over with the creepy stalker remarks.

She's worse than a stalker. My wolf comments observantly.

Shuddap. I snap at her. You're not helping much.

She smirks. Darling, I'm not here to help you.

I sigh inwardly. Well, what good use are you then, hmm?

She shuts up after that, and I tune into the others. The principal is looking at me with a semi-annoyed expression, and I wonder whether she said anything.

"Huh?" I ask her, and she scowls, making Harper groan.

"I said, Miss Ryder," She snaps. "Even though your last principal may have tolerated your inappropriate behaviour," At this I had to smirk. Tolerated my butt. Hah. Funny new principal.

"I will not." She says to me. "And I hope that you realise that this is your first official warning Miss Ryder. Three strikes and you're out. We do not tolerate bad behaviour, and running between two classrooms having a food fight is not good behaviour." I smirk. I bet it's not.

I nod at her, and exaggerate a soldier's salute. "Yes Sir!"

She narrows her eyes even more, before looking to my brother quickly. "That is all Miss Ryder. I sincerely hope that I do not see you again in this kind of circumstance, it would be a terrible day if you had to leave Mantle High."

Somehow, her eyes told me otherwise. I nod enthusiastically, pretending that I wasn't going to be a naughty girl again. Haha. Yeah, that'd be the day, when Maya Ryder is tamed.

She nods once. "That will be all Miss Ryder. Mister Ryder, a word before you leave."

Bowing mockingly, I march out of the room with a smirk on my face. Sheesh. Was she old school or what?

Grinning, I shrug to myself. Oh well. She'll break in a few weeks. And anyways, I have Music next. Time for Sam to meet his D-Day.

Skipping in to class, I smile at the teacher, making her raise her eyebrows at me. I scoff to myself. Ptch, what does she know.

I sit down at our table, and tap my fingers impatiently. Ugh, why can't Sam just hurry up and get here already!

5 minutes later, the bell rings, and Sam still hasn't turned up, leaving me slightly worried. He hasn't chickened out has he? I scoff inwaredly. Probably has, the coward.

Xavier suddenly bursts through the door, and I resist the urge to drool at him when he brushes past me, igniting those damn sparks agian. Wait, Maya thinks what now??! Why the heck am I thinking that?! He's a jerkwad! Snap outta it Maya, c'mon!

My wolf howls in content inside me. Mate! She sighs in ecstasy. I frown to myself.

What's a mate? I ask her, and she shakes her head in disbelief.

Ignorant girl. She scoffs. No time to ask now, go over to our mate and talk to him!

I shake my head stubbornly. Nu-uh, he's a jerkface.

She sighs, annoyed, and leaves me in peace, with one final cry to our 'mate'. Scowling at him, which he returns quickly, I turn to the teacher as she takes the role.

When she reaches Sam's name, I sit up straighter and look around. Is he still not here?

I hear someone shout out. "Sam's sick Miss!" She nods, and ticks him off as absent.

I sigh. There goes my last chance of any help for the song. I grin to myself. Oh well, his loss if he can't sing the awesomest song with me! Even though I'm not the best at singing. . . .

Xavier's POV

I lounge back in my chair as the teacher takes the roll. I see that girl in front of me, what was her name? Michaela? Micole? Mia?

Maya. My wolf growls inside of me. Our mate you douche.

I growl back at him. No way in hell is my mate a weak human being!

He scoffs. Human or not, she's still your mate. With that last annoying thought, he leaves me.

I sigh in frustration. Why had the stupid Wolf Gods paired me up with such a puny weakling? I'm a soon to be Alpha dammit! I resist the urge to growl out aloud. A human ain't gonna do much to protect my pack. And besides. she was a Ryder. I try not to snarl when I think that name. Her annoying pests of brothers that belong to the other pack in Canterbury drive me up the wall, stupid mutts.

I'm jerked out of my thoughts when the teacher calls her name, and she flounces up to the front, with all the present males eyes on her. I try not to growl at them protectively. Wait, what?!

I have to admit, she was a looker. With her mahogany rich brown hair that cascades down her back in bouncy curls, her willowy, tall figure and sparkling green eyes, she wasn't just some ordinary girl. Add to that her fiery attitude, she had almost every male in the school lusting after her. Wolves and humans.

She smirks at the class, and looks at the teacher. "Seeing as my partner ain't here, I'll just sing the whole song by myself." She drawls, and Ms Summer nods, before turning on the CD player, and the intro starts. Maya opens her mouth and starts to sing Taylor Swift's lines.

I, wish I

Was strong, enough,

To lift, not one,

But Both, of Us

Someday, I will be strong

Enough, to lift, not one,

But Both, of Us.

Her pure, melodic voice fills the room, and captures everyone's attention in the room in an instant. I gotta admit, I'm impressed. Who knew a human could sing that well, and it makes me oddly proud thinking that of her. Then I scold myself when I think that. She's a human for God's Sake! I shouldn't be thinking these things about her! It's not like we're ever going to be together. . .

Xavier. A voice appears in my mind as someone uses the pack link. I sigh.

What Aidan? I ask irratatedly.

He smirks in my head. I found out something pretty interesting about that Ryder girl.

I raise my eyebrows at him. What?

I'll tell you at the end of period. Meet me at the pack house. He says, causing me to growl slightly at him.

Dammit Aidan, why can't you just tell me now?! I snap.

He sighs, tutting. Be calm oh impatient one. Just meet me ok?

Heaving out a deep breath, I nod at him. Ok. It's not like it's a bother; my pack pretty much owns this school, so they won't worry if I turn up truant for the rest of the day.

He nods back. See you then.

He leaves my head, leaving me to wonder what was so important about Maya that he had to tell me face to face.

Maya's POV

I finish Taylor's singing bit with a smile, and look around to see most of the guys in the room leaning forward in their seats, looking at me intensely. That causes me to wonder why on earth they were doing that, before I keep on singing.

Ever thought about losing it
When your money’s all gone and you lose your whip
You might lose your grip when the landlord tell ya that you due for rent
And the grass so green on the other side
Make a n-gga wanna run staight through the fence
Open up the fridge ’bout 20 times
But you still can’t find no food in it
That’s foolishness
And sometimes I wonder, why we care so much about the way we look, and the way we talk and the way we act and the clothes we bought, how much that cost?
Does it even really matter?
Cause if life is an uphill battle
We all tryna climb up the same ol’ ladder
In the same boat, with the same ol’ paddle
Why so shallow? I’m just asking
What’s the pattern for the madness
Everybody ain’t a number one draft pick
Most of us ain’t hollywood actors
But if it’s all for one, and one for all
Then maybe one day, we all can ball
Do it one time for the underdogs
Sincerely yours, from one of yall

Some of the guys start to wolf whistle at me, and I smirk at them, silently laughing.

I, wish I

Was strong, enough,

To lift, not one,

But Both, of Us

Someday, I will be strong

Enough, to lift, not one,

But Both, of Us.

I look over at Xavier, and he looks oddly distracted, like he's talking to someone, and I furrow my eyebrows, strangely hurt that he's not listening to me sing. Shaking my head, I turn back to the teacher and start rapping again, grinning.

I can feel your pain, I can feel your struggle
You just wanna live, been everything so low
That you can drown in a puddle.
That’s why I gotta hold us up, yeah hold us up
For all the times no one ever spoke for us
To every single time that they play this song
You can say that that’s what Bobby Ray wrote for us
When the tides get too high
And the sea up underneath get so deep
And you feel like you’re just another person
Getting lost in the crowd, way up high in the nosebleed
Uh, because we won’t be near yet, both of us
But we still stand tall with our shoulders up
And even though we always against the odds
These are the things that’ve molded us
And if life hadn’t chosen us
Sometimes I wonder where I woulda wound up
Cause if it was up to me, I’d make a new blueprint
Than build it from the ground up, hey
But if it’s all for one, and one for all
Then maybe one day, we all can ball
Do it one time for the underdogs
From Bobby Ray, to all of y’all

Smiling, I turn my voice up a notch and sing out the chorus loudly, letting my voice soar.

I, wish I

Was strong, enough,

To lift, not one,

But Both, of Us

Someday, I will be strong

Enough, to lift, not one,

But Both, of Us.

Oooooh, ooooooooh, ooooooooh, oooooooh.

I finish the song on a high note, and when the music stops, I bow with a flourish. The class is left in silence for a second, before they all burst into applause, and I blush inadvertantly, something I never do. Ms Summers walks over to me with a big smile, and pats me on the back.

"That was really good Maya!" She says enthusiastically. "Well done!"

I wave her off. "Yeah yeah whatever." I mumble, even though I'm gloating inside. She thinks I'm good?!

I walk back to my seat and flop down in it, sighing. I hear a murmured "Well done," emit from behind me, and see Xavier looking at me with an indifferent expression.

"Thanks." I mutter back, before turning back to the teacher and the next singer.

"Well done!" A energetic red head comes over to me and says, bouncing in the spot. I finish packing up my stuff and turn to her, my eyebrows raised. "You were really good at singing! How long have you been taking lessons?"

I frown at her. "Uhh, never." She's a little too enthusiastic for my liking. "Excuse me but I have to-"

"Woah, you've never taken lessons?" She exclaims with wide eyes. "But you're so good!"

I give up on trying to leave nicely. "Excuse me." I snap at her, shoving past, and I see a look of hurt cross her face, leaving me feeling slightly guilty. But only slightly.

I walk over to my brothers, who are sitting in their usual place, laughing and shoving each other around as usual.

"Hey guys." I greet them with a smirk.

"Hey." Chris smiles at me. "Who was that you were talking to? Were you trying to make a friend?" He sounds uncannily excited.

I whack his arm. "Nice try kiddo." I snap playfully. "You crack me up. No I wasn't, she was trying to become my friend."

"And you didn't respond why?" Harper asks with a raised eyebrow. I shrug.

"I don't make friends with females."

They all snort. "Pur-lease." Chris sniggers.

I cross my arms. "Name one friend of mine that isn't a guy."

"Uhh. .. . . " Chris stalls. I smirk.

"Theres all the proof that you need. I don't make friends with females."

The others all snigger, and I poke my tongue out at them. Childish, I know, but this is me you're talking about.

The rest of the day whizzes past, most of it pretty uneventful. If you count me stealing Harper's sweatshirt and dying it during Fabrics - which, by the way, I wouldn't have ever chosen ever, but my father decided to choose all my subjects - before presenting it to him in the middle of the cafeteria, much to everyone's obvious amusement, as uneventful.

When Carter and the others had seen what I’d done to Harper’s sweatshirt, they had burst into laughter, with Chris high fiving me and saying “Maya Ryder is indeed back,” in a posh English accent, which made me poke my tongue out at him childishly, but laugh along with them anyway.

The bell rang, signalling the end of school, and I pack up my math stuff, before thanking the teacher and leaving the classroom. Chris sneaks up behind me and jabs me in the ribs, making me squeal inadvertently.

“Chris you wanker!” I cry, glaring at him, “Don’t do that to me!!”

He laughs. “You actually squealed. You. Squealing.” He bursts out laughing again. “Priceless.”

I slap his arm, hard. He winces and mock glares at me. “Dude, what was that for?!”

I smirk at him. “You deserved it.”

He sighs and throws his hands up in mock exasperation. “What will we do with you, I don’t know.”

I hug him sideways, squeezing him hard, “I honestly don’t know Chris.”

We walk over to the car, on which the triplets were sitting on, chatting to some of their friends. I sidle up next to Harper and grin at him cheekily.

“Liking the new improvements on the sweatshirt Harp?” I ask with a smirk. He scowls at me and shakes his head.

“I still can’t believe you did that. Why?!” He cries, looking at me in horror. His mates laugh and one looks at me with a raised eyebrow.

“This the chick that dyed your sweatshirt Harp?” The red head asks with a grin. “She’s hot dude.”

Harper glares at his friend and narrows his eyes slightly. “She’s also my sister Mac.”

Mac grins and high fives me. “Nice work girl. His face was classic.”

I laugh and high five him back with a grin. “Sure was. Shows people not to mess with me.” I say with a shrug.

Mac shakes his head and looks at my brother. “Dude, what did you do?”

Harper smiles impishly. “I redecorated her room all pink.”

They all roar with laughter and look at my disgusted expression. “Yeah, but tell them what I’ve done to you all week.”

Harper pales slightly and they all look at me wide eyed. “Is she that scary?” One of them asks.

I smirk at him. “Hellz yeah. No one messes with Maya Ryder.” Then I laugh at all their expressions, and Im pretty sure I sounded like a crazy person. Then one sneers at me.

“I still would do her.” He says with a wiggle of his eyebrows. I raise mine at him.

“Sure sweetie,” I coo. “You can ‘do me’, though you may not live to brag about it.” And when he doesn’t answer, looking shocked, I smile at him sweetly and climb into the car. “Let’s go guys! I wanna get home before Christmas.”

Chris climbs in next to me as the triplets all say goodbye to their friends, all of them glaring slightly at the guy who tried to hit on me, which made me grin. Yeah, you mess with me, you mess with my brothers. Deal with it punk.

As Carter manouvers the car out of the school carpark, Harper turns to look at me.

“Uh Maya?” He asks with a pale grin. I look at him.

“What buckaroo.”

He bites his lip, and I smirk. “When are you gonna stop with all of the pink pranks? I do have a reputation you know.”

I laugh, and smile sweetly. “Oh, I don’t know Harper. When I feel like it.” I didn’t add that I only had one other prank up my sleeve, and that it would happen later in the week.

He growls quietly and turns around. “Maya, I hate you so much.”

I smile at him. “Love ya too Harp.”

Xavier’s POV

I jump out of my green Porsche and walk up to the pack house, pushing my Aviators up onto my head. My 7year old sister Daelia greets me at the door with a big cheesy grin.

“Xavi!” She shrieks, tackling my legs and hugging them ferociously. A rare smile breaks out onto my face and I lift her up.

“ ‘Sup Dae!” I greet her, tickling her sides. Giggling, she squirms in my arms and tries to slap my hands away.

“N-no!” Dae splutters, blonde hair escaping her plait. “Stop it!”

Someone clears their throat behind me and I turn around, raising my eyebrows. My aunt Lisa smiles at me, and I nod in return.

“Hi Xavier.” She chirps. “Good day?”

I nod again, and set Dae down, letting her run over to Lisa. “You seen Aidan anywhere?”

She nods. “He’s out the back. He said he wanted you?”

“Yeah.” I grunt. “Cheers.”

I throw my bag down, and walk through our massive house, on my way to the backyard. A curvy red-head struts up to me and drapes herself over my arm. I struggle to remember her name. Amy? Anna? Alana?

“Xavier.” Amy, I decide to call her, purrs at me, rubbing her big chest on my arm. “Wanna continue what we didn’t finish last night?”

Usually I would take up her offer immediately, but today I had pack business. “Sorry darl’.” I drawl. “Pack business. I’ll be free tonight.”

She pouts at me, her big full lips subconsciously drawing me in. “Are you sure babe? I’m sure your pack business can wait.” She slinks her arms around my neck and proceeds to pepper kisses along my jaw.

I can feel myself getting aroused, and I wrap my arms around her waist. Standing on her tippy toes, Amy brings her lips up to mine, and kisses me passionately. I kiss her back, before drawing away, feeling slightly guilty. Why?

“Sorry babe.” I smirk. “As I said, Pack business comes first.”

She reluctantly draws away, and winks at me. “I’ll be waiting.” She purrs, before walking away, swinging her hips.

I walk out the back door and spot Aidan waiting next to the forest entrance. He smirks at me as I approach.

“Distractions?” He teases, raising an eyebrow. I shrug.

“Bro’s before hoe’s. Anyway,” I smirk back at him. “She’ll be here tonight; they can’t stay away.”

He shakes his head, amused. “Dude, you always get the best sluts.”

I shrug again. “What can I say? I’m irresistible."

“Well, don’t let it go to your head Xavi.” He laughs.

I chuckle. “So anyway, what did you want me for exactly?” I ask. “What’s the big secret about the human chick, Maya I think her name is?”

My wolf growls at me. You know her damn name stupid.

I growl back at him, tired of his petulant remarks. Shut it dickwad.

“Dude, she’s not human.” Aidan says, which has me snapping back to look at him.

What?!” I growl. “Of course she’s human dipshit.”

He shakes my head. “I think I could see her changing into a white wolf when I see it.”

My mouth gapes open. “A white wolf? Are you kidding me?! There are no white wolves!” I growl again. “And besides, her brothers would know if she’s a wolf.”

Aidan shakes his head, looking perplexed. “Do you think that I’m lying to you right now Xavi?! I saw it with my own damn eye you dick.” My wolf growls at his challenge.

“Watch it Aidan.” I snarl, sounding a little more animalistic than I wanted to. His eyes immediately look down; he’s not stupid enough to challenge an alpha, or an alpha in the making.

“Sorry.” He mutters, before looking me in the eye again. “Xavier, I saw it with my own eye. Maya Ryder is a wolf, a rogue, even though she doesn’t think that she is.”

My eyes flash angrily at the mention of my mate being a rogue. “My ma- why is she a rogue?”

He shakes his head again. “Dude, her brothers don’t know that she’s a wolf, so she doesn’t belong to their pack now does she?”

A growl erupts from my throat involuntarily. My mate is a rogue. My memory flashes back to that night before I can stop it.

A 10 year old me wanders into my room, where my twin sister Adrianna is bouncing on the bed.

“Xavi, Xavi, Xavi.” She chants, grinning at me. “You can’t get me!” She throws the challenge at me with confidence.

I throw myself at her, tackling her to the bed, and she shrieks. “Muuuuuuuuuuummmm, Xavi’s tackling me again!” She hollers, squirming underneath me. I laugh, and leap off her quickly.

“No I’m not, she’s lying Mum!”

I race from the room, with Adri hot on my tail. We skid into the dining room, grinning. My mother smiles tenderly at both of us, wisps of her unique silver-blonde hair floating around her face. Adri runs past me to stand next to Mum, grinning slightly.

“Mum, don’t listen to him, he’s lying again!”

My mother looks at me, mocking stern face on. “Xavi, you know not to tackle Adri to the bed.”

10 month old baby Daelia starts to quietly cry from her room next to me, but I ignore her. Mum’ll sort her out soon. I think before turning back to my cheeky sister.

I shrug at her, laughing, but not denying her accusations. Adri grins at me triumphantly, and sticks her tongue out, making me stick mine back out at her. Mum laughs at us.

“Stop being childish you two.” She scolds, still smiling.

A growl rips through the air, and the window smashes, allowing a jet black wolf to leap through it, eyes flashing. Adri screams as it runs towards her and Mum, and I stumble back into a little hollow, frozen with terror and horror. I scream for Dad, but it’s no use; he’s away securing the border from the rogues that are invading the pack territory. . . . ROGUES!

“MUM!! ADRI!” 10 year old me shrieks as the rogue advances on them.

10 year old me screaming again as the wolf rips my twin sister and mother into shreds.

10 year old me collapsing onto the ground, refusing to look at my dead twin sister and mother.

10 year old me sobbing hysterically as he drapes himself over his sister, vowing revenge on all rogues that crossed through this land.

Aidan looks at me, almost sympathetically as the memories bombard me for what feels like the thousandth time in 7 years.

“Again huh?” He asks. I nod tightly.

Mate or not, she has to go. I snarl to my wolf angrily, and he whimpers.

Wimp. I snort at him before looking at Aidan.

“She’s got 3 days to either join another pack or be out of Canterbury, or I kill her.”

My wolf howls in anguish and pure rage as I turn away from my friend, finalising my decision.

“Go tell her now."
