15. Goodbye Love

Siobhan

“Darling, turn that from upside down” my mother unlocks her car and we get in. She reads me like the paper, picking up on my ever emotion. He is leaving, and it is uncertain when he will return, but he will return…he has to doesn’t he. She turns on her car and checks her reflection in the rearview mirror. That’s when she notices my fathers hummer park alongside the curb in front of the house. Her face falls.
“Now who should turn the frown upside down” I retort. She looks at me, like someone who has not lived enough to know what to do in this situation. And she looks at me as if I have all the answers, but I don’t. My mother lowers the window and my dad levels himself with the window. His facial expression is hard, and serious. “Hi dad” I chime.

“What happened to you two last night?” he looks at me then my mother who looks stupefied. I realize he is upset, but did he really have a right to be? “You just left after the ceremony”

“We went didn’t we” my mother looks at him, her voice smooth as she tries to play it off. “It was a lovely ceremony, very interesting bride” her eyebrows twitch upward and she turns the car off. I check my watch, there was time to spare, but I didn’t want Zayn to miss his plane because of us.

“Loretta, get out of the car. Come and talk to me”

“Anything you have to say, you can say now because we have plans” my mother is playing it cool, and her tone is confident. Her response irritates my father, but he doesn’t back down, he opens the door to the backseat and gets in. I am preparing myself for some serious entertainment. “Or you can just get in my car” my mother adds and turns so she looks at him. My lips are sealed, my father leans forward some and grunts. “Orson, we have to take Zayn to the airport, hurry up and say what you have to say. The boy doesn’t need to miss his flight because of us”

“Look, I cant just say things without you giving me some leeway”

“Orson you have all the leeway in the world. Spill” my mother sounds irritated. “Spill because Zayn is expecting us”

“Mom…” but she disregards me and sucks her teeth.

“Why did you leave?” His question was basic, simple, and to be expected. But of course my mother wouldn’t answer honestly. Why would she, after all, my father was married now and she couldn’t just bare her soul to him with no reservations.

“Why should I have stayed?” my mothers lips are a thin line, and her eyes are fierce.

“Why shouldn’t you have stayed?” he snarls. “I invited you both and I would’ve liked to dance with my daughter…and you Loretta”

“Orson do me a favor, stop right there. Okay?” if that was the best my mom could do, then she would be in trouble with this debate. I check my watch, and my mother sighs. “Out of the car Orson, we have to get Zayn to the airport”

My father says nothing, instead, he leans back and we hear the click of the seatbelt. Oh gosh, my dad is retaliating. And my mother shrugs, she turns to the wheel, starts the car and pulls out of our driveway. When we leave the housing complex, my father speaks. “You were emotional, why?”

“Aren’t you attentive” my mother stops at a light and she shoots me a look that says ‘the nerve of that man’, I don’t say anything, instead I check my cell. There is one text from Zayn.

Z- “Hey, I called but no answer. Are you all on your way? Xoxo”

I type back and send the message.

S- “Yes…sorry, be prepared, my dad is with us. And it is like world war III in the car”

“Loretta, answer my question please” his voice is a lot calmer now, and he plays with the silver band on his left ring finger.

“Weddings are emotional in general” my mother pulls up front Zayn’s house and honks. “Sisi sit in the back, Orson, come up front” and when we swap spots, Zayn is putting his suitcase in the trunk. The drive is quiet again but the tension is thick as clay. Zayn’s fingers are interlocked with mine and my head rests on his shoulder. We watch my parents argument unfold before us when my father snaps back. He says, “Don’t give me that shit, please tell me. I need to know”

“You don’t have to know a think Orson.”

“I need to know if what I think it is…is really it. I know we bonded a lot this past week and I really want to know if you feel something more”

“If I did or if I didn’t, it doesn’t matter much Orson, you already said I do” my mothers tone is fake carelessness. And it is crafted so it is somewhat believable, to untrained ears anyway. “Shouldn’t you be frolicking with your bride doing newlywed things”

“Do you love me?” he asks boldly. Zayn looks at me and mouths ‘Oh My’, I nod. My mother hit’s the breaks and a noise escapes her. My mother’s pride would not let her be vulnerable to him. Luckily, the light was red. “Loretta…” his voice was gentle now.

“It is what it is Orson, I couldn’t bare the sight of it, so I left and our daughter was just looking out for me. She didn’t leave out of spite”

The rest of the drive is silent, and my mother waits with my father in the car as Zayn and I walk into the airport. He checks in and I know time is winding down. He will leave and a ocean will separate us. He hugs me, and I bury my face into his chest. I didn’t want to let go, but when the plane starts to board, I know its time to let go. He kisses me, and my lips thrive for his. I cup his face, it is smooth and free of hair. When we part, I want to cry a little. “See you soon?”

“You know it” he kisses me again.

Zayn

“Promise?” she asks me, her eyes wide and round and her bottom lip trembling. She loves me, and she is on the brink of tears at the idea of parting from me. She loves me…and I love her.

“Of course” my lips meet hers again. “Because I love you”
