21. ''Sorry'' is not always enough

*Niall's P.O.V*

We got caught up in the moment. We barely saw each other. And that's why we broke up.

''How have you been?'' I asked. James and Jamie had gone in to the room.We were sitting on the sofa, facing each other. She was sitting cross-legged while I sat with my arm resting on the head rest. Holly was amazing. I would never have broken up with her if I didn't get through the X factor auditions.

Her eyes looked down. She looked..sad. I scooted closer, placing my hand on top of hers, which were on her lap. She'd gone through a lot lately. All the hate from people who barely knew her-just because she was my ex-girlfriend.

She laughed half-heartedly, looking up into my eyes. ''It hasn't been easy. The shit about me dieing. All those f***king haters should just go f*** themselves,'' she muttered, clearly frustrated. Tears were swimming in her eyes. I leaned in, making eye contact with her. I pulled her chin up.

''Hey,'' I breathed. ''No one deserves this. I'm so sorry. But it looks like you and James are happy.''

She smiled, nodding. But then she stared into my eyes. ''But I can't help feeling that there's something holding me back,'' she told me. She leaned in until our lips touched. I was shocked. I pulled back, surprised that she had done that. Why would she ? I was with Jamie and she was with James. And I love Jamie. More than anything else.

''But don't say that you don't still have feeliings for me,'' she dared, although rather weakly.

I thought this through. I'd left her in Mullingar to pursue my dreams. Yes, initially, I felt guilt and regret. I missed her. I missed talking to her. But do I still have feelings for her? Again, she caught me off guard and placed her lips on mine, getting on top of me, straddling me. For a moment, I felt the same way I did when we were dating. I placed my hands on her waist, intending to push her off but instead, I ended up holding her in place. What the f*** was I doing? At this realisation, I pulled back.

''I can't do this. We shouldn't,'' I told her, breathless. I tried to get up. But she pushed me down and kissed me again. This time, I got frustrated and angry.

''Niall?'' I heard a familiar voice call out. I could sense surprise and hurt. I pushed Holly away and stood up. I saw that look on Jamie's face. The look I never wanted to see again. James had a shocked expression on his face as he looked at Holly. I walked slowly towards Jamie, my hands outstretched. I attempted to touch her. I needed to explain. I reached out for her shoulder but she shied away, taking a step back.

''I should go,'' she murmured to James, walking around me and hurrying out, slamming the door behind her. I ran after her, leaving Holly and James alone. It was raining heavily, the smell of wet pavement hung in the air. We hadn't brought an umbrella but I saw her running anyway, her feet splashing in puddles. I actually managed to catch up to her and pulled her hand, making her stop and turn around to face me. Her cheeks and eyes were red. I had made her cry. What an idiot. She looked over my shoulder and stuck her hand out. I noticed a cab stopping. She got in and scooted in as far as she could. Then, I got in. Her hands were in her lap and she didn't even glance at me once. I was desperate to explain to her what had happened. It was an accident. I never meant to hurt her and while I had feelings for Holly before, I was in love with Jamie now. She got out of the cab, giving the driver the fare and not bothering to wait for me. Her hair hung in loose curls around her face, her clothes were drenched,as were mine. It was cold but that did'nt matter to me at the moment.

''Just let me explain, Jamie!'' I pleaded. She stopped on the first step up to the door of our flat and turned around to face me. Her face was hardened, her fists clenched at her sides. I told her everything - the sequence of events in chronological order. She nodded a few times but nothing more, her lips in a tight line. ''I'm sorry,'' I told her sincerely. I'm a bastard, I'm sure of that. She turned around, not saying another word, and took another step.

''Say something, please!'' I pleaded, taking a step closer to her. She turned around quickly.

''What do you WANT me to say, Niall?'' she spitted out. But then her expression softened, her shoulders slumped.

''You believe me right?''

''Yes, I believe you. But for the moment, I don't trust you,'' she paused. I nodded. So, I think we should both take a break,'' she suggested. My heart sank. ''At least until we figure out how we feel for each other. And then...we'll see how things go from there,'' she continued, kissing me on the cheek once before walking into the flat. Night had fallen so it was understandable that Jamie went into her room and never came out. I noticed the boys had left to pack, as the note they left had told me. I plopped down on the sofa, looking up at the ceiling. I screwed up. I fished out my phone and dialed in the number. After a few rings, he picked it up.

''Yeah mate?''

''I screwed things up with Jamie. I need your help,'' I pleaded.
