18. Miracle

*Niall's P.O.V*

It's been a week since Jamie's mum's funeral.

It's been hard on all of us. So many things have happened. The boys and I all attended the funeral. Her sisters and aunt were there too and my heart broke as I watched Darcy and Quinn cry in Jamie's arms. Harry and Liam feel especially sad, besides me of course. But Jamie's been hit the hardest, that's for sure. To make things worse, the paparazzi have been following us everywhere. The things they've been speculating is blantantly rude-it's revolting. They've managed to establish that Jamie and I are a 'couple', and added pictures of us going out for dinner with the boys back when we were just friends. Sometimes, we just need our privacy, especially when it comes to family matters. Even mum came to the funeral. Thank God for Paul because he's been fending off all the media from us during this rough period.

Jamie doesn't want to admit it but I know she's feeling guilty-as if it's her fault that her mother passed away when she did. She tries to hide it but upon closer inspection, I know that something's not right. There's no more light in her emerald green eyes. Her smile is superficial...forced. I've noticed she doesn't eat much now - barely a nibble before she retreats to her bedroom and stays in their for the rest of the day.We haven't been speaking much but I figured I should give her some space. The lads have tried talking to her but she always replies with the same answer - ''I'm fine'' - followed by a small smile that we all know isn't sincere. And I can't help but feel guilty. I don't know what to do. When I catch her eye, she stares at me dully. I'm desperate and willing to try anything to cheer her up.

The boys and I were sitting in the living room, watching the telly but probably none of us were actually paying attention.

''Hey Niallator,'' Liam called from across the room.

I looked in his direction and immediately perked up when I saw that look in his eyes - which usually meant he had an idea.

''Yeah?'' I replied eagerly. Harry, Louis and Zayn, sensing my excitement, turned to face Liam too.

''Do you remember anything about what Jamie wants? Anything at all. I was thinking that if we fulfilled one of her wishes, it'd cheer her up. I know dealing with the death of a loved one is never easy to move on from but, it's worth a try,'' he suggested. I chewed on my nails - I remembered all the conversations I had with Jamie. Spending time with Jamie was always enjoyable for me. I just had to organise my thoughts and sort everything out, something I was never good at. On the other hand, Zayn was a brilliant organiser. If only he could read my mind and help me. I forced myself to think hard. Jamie had told me she wanted to visit the Vietnam War Memorial but that wouldn't be logical because Jamie probably wouldn't be up for travelling. She had also mentioned that she wanted a 97' Chevy Impala-she fancied vintage cars-and wanted to go back to school but didn't have the money. I would have helped her with this but it seemed too last minute. What else did she say she wanted? I'd managed to obtain all this information about her during the late night conversations we used to have. Come on Niall, you bastard, think!Wait! I've got it!

I snapped my fingers and Zayn faced me. ''We could get her a....''

''CAT!'' Zayn and I exclaimed simultaneously, jumping to our feet. So much for reading minds. Harry stood up too, his curls bouncing slightly.

''Yeah! A cat! But not just any cat...a pussy cat!'' he declared, raising his index finger in the air. He probably just wanted a cat - he loves cats. The boys nodded furiously and we all scrambled out to find a pet cat for Jamie. Hopefully, it'd make her feel better.

A few hours later, we were back at my flat, a cat in the cage. We'd bought all the necessary supplies too.

''Are you sure she'll like it, mate?'' Louis asked doubtfully.

To be honest, I wasn't really sure but I knew Jamie had the ability to love anything and anyone, regardless of what it looked like. I admired her for that.We would have to thank Uncle Si for giving us the day off before we left for our European tour tomorrow. The tour. Oh damn! That completely slipped my mind, what with all the things going on with Jamie. I would have to have a talk with Simon later. But first things first. The lads and I stood at her bedroom door, anxiously waiting. I tapped the door twice, waiting for it to swing open.

''Yeah?'' Jamie asked dully, after swinging open the door. She scanned our faces and then, finally saw the cat. I was unsure of how she would react to it.

''I'm sorry if you don't like it- we could always go back to the shop and get another one for you. I mean, Niall though it would be a good idea to cheer you up because he knows you love cats and-'' Louis blurted out, recovering quickly.

She stared at the animal in the cage for a long while, clearly interested.

The cat would be perfectly normal, except that she was blind in one eye-that was since birth, as the pet shop owner informed us-and her right hind leg had been amputated because she'd been involved in a car accident. I held my breath as she took the cage from my hand, brushing against my hand slightly. She brought the cage to the living room and set it on the floor, lifting the door up and let the cat sniff her hand, before gently picking it up in her arms. She stroked the entire length of its body. The rest of us sat around her, watching her and the cat. Her eyes were shining when she looked up at us, studying all our faces. Then, a smile spread across her face.

''She's perfect,'' Jamie breathed, actually laughing, her tinkling laughter making US smile too. We haven't heard THAT in a LONG time. She managed to pull us all into a big hug and then individually. We finally broke the hug and there were tears in her eyes.

''Thank you. All of you. You boys are brilliant,'' she said, her voice wavering a little. ''I love all of you.''

''Aww...we love you too!'' Louis replied, planting a kiss on her cheek, making her blush. I had to admit, I was a little envious-I wanted a kiss from her. She looked at me from under her long eyelashes-I was sitting on the other side of her, so it was easier for me to do this.

I pulled her chin up with my finger and smashed my lips to hers, kissing her hungrily. I missed kissing her. She wrapped her hand around my neck, her other hand still holding the cat who had fallen asleep in her arms. We finally pulled away, breathing hard. Her cheeks were a rosy pink.

Zayn cleared his throat, looking down, a cheeky grin tugging on the ends of his lips. Jamie and I stayed close, she resting her head on my shoulder.

''What's her name?'' she asked, staring lovingly down at her new pet.

''We haven't named her,'' I told her, kissing the top of her head.

''Why don't you name her?'' Harry suggested, his green eyes shining.

She chewed on her nails, thinking.

''What about...Mira?'' she asked, looking at us. ''You know? Like..Mira-cle? Coz she survived through everything. Kinda like me,'' she smiled to herself.

''I think it's perfect,'' I agreed, making her smile wider. The boys nodded fervently.

''So...what are you guys watching?'' she asked, getting on her feet and sitting on the sofa. We all joined her, still watching her. She looked happier. The spark in her eyes were back, the pink in her cheeks and perfectly shaped lips had returned. We forgot to switch the telly off before we left.

''Well...we were...we don't actually know,'' Louis answered unsurely, making Jamie laugh. I love that laugh.

''Well, whatever it is, can Mira and I join you?''

''Of course you can,'' Zayn replied.

We watched the telly, an episode of American Dad! was playing. My arm was around Jamie's shoulders, her head resting on my shoulder as I absentmindedly played with her long, wavy, chestnut-coloured hair. I'd have to speak to Uncle Si. I needed to talk to him about Jamie. I wanted to bring her along. On the tour, with me.
