Black Cord

A short little story about a young girl diagnosed with end stage melanoma, her fight to hold on to her hope, and to find her courage to let go and accept her fate.

11. eleven. wishes do come true.

"Are you out of your mind?!?" Mum says,

"It's not worth it! Look how far you've come!"

How far? Nowhere.

Dr. Mackenzie's trying to use his soft voice on me. It won't work.

Mom and Dr. M leave the room, and try to talk softly outside the door, but I can still hear thier conversation:

Dr M; "Sarah, she's young and she's accepting her mortality. It was wrong to start the treatment. She thought...she was going to get better. We're instigating false hope."

Mom: "She's fourteen! You said it yourself: she is young. She doesn't deserve to die yet! What am I supposed to do, just unplug her and watch her die? No! I won't do it! I will not kill my child!" It started out mild but turned into full-blown yelling.

Suddenly, the room begins to swirl around me. My head is pulsating and the pain in intensifying. It's hard to  breathe. I hear the monitor, faintly, beeping unrhythmatically. I hear yelling and footsteps and suddenly I can't breathe and I pass out.

You got your wish. This is it.
