1. Arriving

I looked up. The building looked all right from the outside. But that didn't say anything about the flats inside. Or the people inside. But I had to appear confident. I was 17. I needed to walk into the building with my head held high and show all of them that I wasn't a kid. Because nobody would want to live with a kid.

I never realised that there was so much to think about when searching for your first flat. So much to consider and even when you'd found the right one, you couldn't be sure they'd take you. I had finally found a good place, or what I thought was a good place. Apparently this building was filled with college students, like me, and other people my age. Also, each apartment was fitted with electricity and a lot of everyday items like a microwave and a working shower that were essential. Plus, on top of that, the rent was quite low because I would be sharing with 3 other roommates.

I walked inside the building. The first floor was mainly empty space but there was an office on the opposite side of the room. I looked around at the polished wooden floor and plain golden coloured candelabra's on the wall as I walked across to the office, the 3 inch heels of my black ankle boots clacking on the floor as I walked. As I neared the office I tapped on the slightly dirty window of the wooden door that lead to the office, meanwhile pulling out the newspaper clipping with the ad for the apartment.

It took a while but eventually, an old man with white hair, a white beard and a hunch in his back opened the door and peered at me through his small circular glasses. He was wearing a brown tweed suit that gave him a grandfather-ish look.

"Hello, sweetheart. How can I help you?"

"Hi, sir. I'm here about the apartment" I showed him the clipping.

"I thought it would be best to see it in person before deciding anything

"Oh yes, that apartment" the old man had a worried look on his face.

"You seem like a nice girl. Now, I'm not gonna stop you from staying here, lord knows we need more good people here, but just be careful with yourself. Some of the people who live here aren't exactly very nice"

"Don't worry." I gave him my kindest smile.

"I'm sure I can take care of myself"
