Inevitable- Carla Chase

It's basically a story I wrote about three years ago. It is a fantasy about a girl in care who finds out she's something else.., made for teens. Not a fairy story. Would like some general feedback on it, really. :)

10. Loss of hope

“Carla? Are you ok?” I say and Carla hugs me.

“Tai, I can’t believe you came for me! She says. She pulls away from the hug and then hits me on my arm.

“Ow!” I say. “What was that for?”

“Tai, I can’t believe you came for me!” she says but this time her tone shows she is angry. “You could have got yourself killed! That is exactly what I have been trying to stop!”

“Exactly Carla! Exactly! You think by letting them perform the Arabatha ceremony which will end in your death we are going to survive? They will kill you, then me and then attack our castle! If they get hold of your powers they will destroy the world! At least if you help them you could have some control over your powers. Maybe even turn them on the HippoDuctyl. Didn’t think of that one did you, Carla?”I boast. Carla looks thoughtful for a second or two.

“No” she says.

“No, what?” I say curiously.

“No I won’t help them. There is a chance I won’t be able to turn my powers on them. I mean I tried doing it here a minute ago but I think they have some sort of protection bubble around them. At least with the Arabatha ceremony they might not be able to get my powers. At least we have a chance.” She says. I sigh. Maybe she is right, I don’t want Carla to die but maybe the rescue of one life isn’t worth the lives of the whole world population.

“Darn it Carla, I hate it when you are right!” I smile and put my arm around her shoulder. She smiles weakly but I can see the terror in her eyes. She is scared but she won’t admit it.

“Well, I have to write a letter to your mum. You know, saying we are perfectly fine and we are on a decorating camp, blah de blah de blah” I smile. Carla laughs quietly and I ring the bell on the wall. One of the HippoDuctyl walks in and slides the grate on the door open.

“You want something?” it says bluntly.

“I need a pen and some paper to write the letter to the Queen.” I say and the HippoDuctyl frowns.

“The Queen is here. Queen Becky is eating her lunch.” It says.

“Ha, I meant the proper Queen! You know! Queen Bella!” I say and the HippoDuctyl snarls.

“Fine, I will get you some paper and a pen” it says. A few minutes later it comes back with a piece of parchment, a fountain pen and an envelope. “Here you go” it says and then wonders out of the cell. I smile at Carla.

“Stupider than a Catfish” I laugh and Carla looks at me blankly.

“What do you mean?” she says.

“All will become clear!” I say and I grab the paper and pen.

“Dear Queen Bella” I start to say as I write. “. Hello, we are at Eagle falls decoration camp, we thought we could use a few more tips for our project. Loving you lots and don’t worry about us, we are Perfectly fine, love Carla and Tai!” I write the castles address on the envelope and pass the letter to the HippoDuctyl who walks past the cell. He quickly reads it to check what I have put. He nods and then puts it in the envelope.

Carla raises her eyebrows. “Why are you looking so smug?” she says. I shrug my shoulders and fake looking confused.

“I don’t know. Do I look smug? That’s weird!” I say and pretend to yawn. “I might have a nap; they could have given us some beds! Dear me, it’s not very good hospitality is it-” I am interrupted by the cell door opening and I turn round to see Becky standing with her hands on her hips.

“Not good hospitality? Oh dear, I should really sort that shouldn’t I?” she smirks. “Maybe I will, if you agree to help me, Carla?” she says and raises her eyebrows at her. Carla makes a grunt of disapproval. I chuckle. “I really wouldn’t laugh, Tai. You are supposed to have changed her mind. That was your only use. You have failed with your task, we don’t need you anymore.” Becky says.  “Not laughing now, are you?” she giggles insanely.

“Wait, what do you mean?” Carla whispers.  I shrug my shoulders at her.

“She means she is going to kill me.” I say back and Carla slides down the wall.

“No, Tai! I will help them then, I can’t lose you!” she whispers. I see Becky smirk in the corner, obviously pleased with this outcome.

“No.” I say and I see Becky snarl with both shock and hate.

“What do you mean Tai? I won’t lose you!” Carla cries.

“Yeah, you don’t want to lose your whole world either! You didn’t want to sacrifice your world for the sake of your life.  Do the same with my life, Carla. I’m begging you.” I say and hug her.

“Darn it Tai, I hate it when you are right!” she says, mimicking me from earlier. Tears are streaming down Carlas face. I laugh but then notice Becky standing in the corner.

“Aw, what a lovely couple! You two are so cute! But I hate to break it to you guys” Becky begins in her ‘butter wouldn’t melt’ voice. “But there has been a slight change in plan.”

“What do you mean?” Carla stutters nervously.

“You two have approximately one hour to spend time with each other. After that I am performing the Arabatha ceremony. On both of you.” She walks out of the door. Her mouth curled in to a sly smile.

“Both of us! But I agreed to help her!” Carla shouts in shock. I’m shocked as well, that monster really does know

“They want my mind reading powers as well! Of course! With your powers and mine together, they can win any war! They will know what the opposition will do, then attack with your powers! Win any war! A war... against the Gods.” I say as realisation dawns on me.

“Oh my Poseidon! They don’t want to attack the mermaids they want to start at the top! Get the Gods to surrender their powers. Then... they can not only control the world but control the universe!” Carla says and I feel my heart pound in my chest. She is right! And there is nothing we can do to stop them! All we can do is sit and wait. Wait for the Ceremony, wait for death.
