Blinded By You

6 months ago, I lost my eyesight. But life goes on, I attend university in London and one of my best friend's is Niall Horan, from One Direction. But he doesn't know I'm blind. Will he hate me when I tell him? Will he treat me the same? Will I fall for one of his bandmates...

40. Nerves & Notes

Kodie’s POV

I made it home with about a half an hour before Rose and I had planned to go out to the restaurant; I walked into my room and stood the guitar case up against the wall. Walking to the bathroom, I was stopped short once I heard a voice come from behind me. “What’s gotten you so smiley?” Rose asked.

Huh, I hadn’t even realized I still had a smile on my face, “Nothing.”

“Sure, now go get cleaned up and we can go to the diner where I can bug you until you tell me what is going on,” Rose pushed me towards the bathroom.

I rolled my eyes at her; once Rose set her mind to something, she wouldn’t give up and I knew by the end of the night, Rose would have gotten me to admit that I had a crush on Niall. Quickly, I ran a comb through my hair, hopefully making it look presentable.

Within 15 minutes, Rose and I had walked to the restaurant and were seated in a booth. The waitress came over to our table and we told her what we wanted to drink.

Once she left Rose cleared her throat in a way that told me to start talking and I seriously wanted to call the waitress back so I wouldn’t be alone with Rose. “Kodie, is there something you would like to tell me?” Rose asked.

I pursed my lips and shook my head, “Nothing comes to mind.” Rose gave me a swift kick to my shin making me jump. “You’re abusive, do you know that? I don’t think our relationship should go any further.” I told her.

“It’s too late for that; you love me and you know it.” Rose said and I could picture her smirking at me. “But you’re not getting out of telling me whatever is bothering you, so spill.” She demanded.

I puffed out my cheeks, but was saved from answering her right away as the waitress came back with the drinks and asked for our orders; Rose asked for a steak salad and I ordered a hamburger with a side of fries.

“Kodie, if you don’t tell me what is floating around in that pretty, little head of yours, I am going to dump your soda on your head.” Rose threatened.

“Remind me why I’m friends with you,” I said, but after hearing her drum her fingers on the table, I figured I might as well spit it out before I ended up a sticky, soda covered mess. “Well, there might be a teeny, tiny possibility that I…,” I trailed off and mumbled the end of my sentence.

“What? You flushed a nail file?” Rose asked. I repeated what I said, but I guess still didn’t say it clearly enough because Rose thought I said, “You shushed a hair style? Kodie, you are not making any sense.”

“I said, I might have a crush on Niall,” I blurted out a bit louder then I intended.

Rose stayed silent before shouting, “I knew it!” I hid my face in my hands as the tables around us went silent. “Sorry,” she apologized.

“Could you possibly have been any louder?” I asked.

“I didn’t mean to, it’s just that you guys are perfect for each other! God, it took the two of you long enough to realize it. When’s the wedding?” Rose said in a quick succession.

I held up my hand to get her to stop rambling. “First of all, I said that I liked him, not the other way around. I highly doubt he thinks of me like that.” I clarified.

She reached over and slapped me upside the head. “Kodie, I love you, but you are lacking some common sense. It’s so blatantly obvious he likes you; if only you could see how he looks at you, it’s like if he looks away for too long you will disappear forever.”

“You have got to be kidding me, I highly doubt that,” I scoffed. A clattering noise in front of me told me that the food had arrived.

“Wake up and smell the Niall; he likes you. So much that I am quite surprised he hasn’t whisked you away and kept you all to himself; granted if he did that I’d be extremely pissed because who else would put up with living with me.” Rose said thoughtfully.

I shook my head at her, “Even if he did like me, it’s not like I could do anything about it. We’re best friends and best friends aren’t supposed to like each other.” I paused. “Well, not supposed to like each other in that way.”

“That is complete bullshit,” Rose said through a mouthful of food. “You can’t change destiny; whatever is supposed to happen will happen and you can’t deny it.”

Sipping on my soda, I thought about what Rose was saying. I mean I understand the whole ‘you can’t change fate’, but I don’t think fate wanted Niall and I together. We were better as friends and I’m sure the universe could see that. “That may be true, but Niall and I are never going to happen.”

“Sure, keep telling yourself that. Meanwhile, I’ll be planning the wedding for my OTP.” Rose told me.

“And what about you? I think you had your eyes on a certain boy whose name begins with J,” I teased her.

She began coughing on the mouthful of food in her mouth and I knew I had been right. “What are you on about?” she asked.

“Rose, I love you, but you lack common sense,” I quoted what she said to me earlier which resulted in her throwing a fry at me. “Come on, I was about to go out on a date with the guy and you were probably drooling over him.”

I imagined she was blushing as she tried to deny it. “So now it’s a crime to point out when a guy is good looking?”

“No, but I know you and the voice you used had a flirty edge to it. I think I shall be planning your wedding,” I teased.

“Kodes, I don’t think I’ve spoken more than two words to the guy,” Rose protested.

I sent her an evil grin, “That can be fixed rather easily.” She threw another fry at me. “Hey, when we get home can you help me choose the winners of the contest? The concerts are coming up soon and I want to make sure they know in advance.”

“Yeah, of course.” Rose answered before another fry hit me. “Really? Was that necessary?”

“Kodie, are you ready to hear the track?” Simon asked.

I nodded, “I am beyond ready.”

Simon pressed play and I heard a really cool beat come out of the speakers. I listened and sang the lyrics in my head, tapping my foot to the beat. I smiled; whoever made this track was amazing. It sounded better than I had ever imagined. “So what do you think?” Simon asked once the song had finished playing.

“It’s perfect; I absolutely love it.” I answered with a smile.

“We can begin recording today, if you’d like.” Simon told me. I nodded and he led me into the recording booth. “Now the microphone is directly in front of you and you will be able to hear the music and all you have to do is sing along. Once we have the vocals how we want them, we’ll go back and layer in more vocals if you want. Personally, I think you should add some because you have an amazing vocal range.” Simon explained.

“Alright, sounds good.” I said and I heard his footsteps recede and the door close.

“Are you ready?” Simon’s voice came through the headphones. I gave him a thumbs up and a couple of seconds later I heard the beginning notes in my ears.

Am I supposed to put my life on hold?

Because you don’t know how to act and you don’t know where your life is going.

I sang the song about 4 or 5 times before it was where Simon and I wanted it and then he had me listen to it once before I chose where to add vocals. I layered more vocals onto the ending chorus and then we perfected it before Simon deemed the track, “Perfect!”

“Hey, Simon, I was wondering if for the next track I could possibly play guitar.” I hesitated.

“Of course; I’d love to hear anything you come up with,” Simon said.

I smiled, “Thank you so much.” Once we finalized some finishing details, I left the Syco building and began the walk back to my flat.

When I got there, the flat was silent so I knew Rose wasn’t home from her classes. I grabbed my guitar and began playing some random chords, trying to find a sequence that sounded good. After too many tries to count, I finally found one I liked; it went F, C, Dm, and then Bb. It was actually a relief because I was beginning to think I wouldn’t be able to play like I used to again.

I kept repeating the sequence until I had it perfectly memorized; now it was time to think of some lyrics for another song. I set my phone on record like I did when I wrote the first song, so I could remember everything I wrote. For this song, I was remembering the disaster that was my first boyfriend; he was really sweet for the first week or so, but he changed and all he did was point out flaws and everything I did wrong. When I told Niall, he was furious to say the least; Niall convinced me that nothing he said was true, that it was the complete opposite.

Sunday night found me trembling like a leaf.

There was only five minutes until I had to go on stage and I was so nervous I felt like I was going to be sick. For the past hour the boys and I had been hanging out with the two girls who won my contest. It was a lot of fun and they were both incredibly sweet and really fun to be around. They had gone to their seats and were waiting for the show to start.

Lou told me that she had outfitted me in black skinny jeans, a silver sequined shirt that had gold beaded netting over and turquoise flats. She had curled my hair and put on a bright lip color seeing as I was still wearing a pair of my aviators. I had told her I didn’t want to wear heels because I didn’t want the chance of falling my first time on stage.

Now, I was waiting off to the side of the stage completely scared out of my mind. A hand touched my arm and I jumped about a foot into the air. “Whoa, Kodie are you alright?” Niall’s voice asked.

“Huh, what? Oh I’m perfect, fantastic, awesome…,” I rambled.

“Yeah, you seem okay.” Niall said, his voice laced with doubt.

I threw my hands up, “How the hell do you do this on a regular basis? I’m so nervous, it’s not even funny.”

Niall laughed, “You get used to it after a couple times; soon enough it’ll be like a second nature.”

“Three minutes until show time!” A voice called and I jumped.

“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,” I repeated while pacing in front of where I thought Niall was standing. “Niall, I can’t do this. I really don’t think I can do this.”

“Kodie,” Niall placed his hands on my shoulders, stopping me from my continuous pacing. “You are going to do fine; just pretend that it’s only the boys and I in the audience. Now breathe.” I did as he told me and took a deep breath in and slowly let it out. The guy came by and told me to get ready because it was time to go on stage. “Good luck,” Niall pulled me into a hug, making my heart beat even faster.

He released me from his grasp and I walked over to the platform that would raise me up to the stage. “And performing now, it’s Kodie Marie!” the announcer said and I could hear the screams from the crowd.

As I rose, the noise grew louder and louder. I called out, “Hello everybody! How is everybody doing tonight?!” The screams increased. “I know you came here for the boys,” I paused to let them fangirl. “But I’m going to be singing a few covers for you guys, so if you know the words please sing along. Hit it!”

The beginning notes of Raise Your Glass played and I began singing. Thankfully, they began singing with me; I was really worried that they wouldn’t like me and boo me off the stage.

After Raise Your Glass I sang E.T., Want U Back, Teenage Dream and I was almost finished with the remixed version of In My Head.

Just leave with me now, say the word and we’ll go.

You’ll see a side of love you’ve never known

The high note faded out and the audience clapped. “This is my last song for the night; thank for making me feel right at home. I’m sure you all are ready for the boys,” I paused again for the screams. “So after this song they’re going to come out and amaze you; their set is absolutely amazing. I don’t think many of you will know it, but if you do please sing with me.”

I stood in, what I believe, was the center of the stage and got ready for the performance. This song, by far, was my favorite song to perform.

Oooh yeah, oh oh

You got me down on the floor,

So what’d you bring me down here for?

You got me down on the floor,

So what’d you bring me down here for?

I sang while bouncing my leg to the beat; I moved him hip out to the music.

If I was a man I’d make my move,

If I was a blade I’d shave you smooth.

If I was a judge I’d break the law,

And if I was from Paris, if I was from Paris,

I would say

Oh la la la la, la la la,

Oh la la la la, la la la.

I fluffed my hair and moved my hips side to side and lowered myself to the ground. The second time, I swayed my hips and raised myself back to a standing position.

Oh la la la la, la la la,

Oh la la la la, la la la
