Blinded By You

6 months ago, I lost my eyesight. But life goes on, I attend university in London and one of my best friend's is Niall Horan, from One Direction. But he doesn't know I'm blind. Will he hate me when I tell him? Will he treat me the same? Will I fall for one of his bandmates...

38. Buying & Baking

Kodie’s POV

Waking up the next morning I felt something heavy draped across my body and something hard was against my back. Then I noticed the thing I was leaning against was rising and falling in a slow, steady rhythm.

As I woke up more I remembered that I had fallen asleep while watching the last Harry Potter movie on the couch, but now I could tell from the texture of what I was laying on wasn’t the couch, but a bed.

Suddenly, something next to me groaned and pulled me closer. I froze as I realized Niall was sleeping next to me. It’s not that I wasn’t used to the two of us sleeping in the same bed, but we had never been this close before. Ever.

Niall’s grip on my waist tightened and I inhaled sharply. Right now I beyond confused about what I actually felt about Niall.

He was just like my brother and it would be extremely strange to have feelings for my brother. But on the other hand, I was always comfortable with Niall and he made me feel safe.

Ugh, it’s too early to be thinking of this. What’s going to happen will happen and I can’t control that. I relaxed into Niall’s touch and listened to his breathing. Within a couple minutes, Niall’s breathing became uneven and he rolled towards the other side of the bed. However, he rolled a little too far, fell off the bed and landed with a thump.

I clapped my hand over my mouth trying really hard not to laugh as I heard Niall sit up. “Fuck…that hurt,” Niall groaned. I giggled. “It’s not funny,” Niall protested. “How would you like to wake up on the floor?”

“I wouldn’t, but I’m smart enough not to roll myself off the bed,” I told him.

“Smart ass,” Niall said before jumping back on the bed, making it dip. “What do you want to do today?” Niall continued to jump up and down on the bed effectively waking me up.

“Teach me some more chords,” I said. He stopped jumping before running out of the room. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

He came back into the room strumming the guitar. “What would you like to learn young grasshopper?”

“How about the chorus of Eye of the Tiger? Remember when we learned that?”

“Yeah, you played it after hearing the song a couple of times; it was crazy,” Niall said before placing the guitar in my hands. “Okay the first three chords are F5, Eb and Bb.” Niall instructed as he put my fingers in the right place. “Then you strum just like this.” He wrapped his arm around me and moved my hand causing the guitar to release the music. Niall removed his arm, much to my disappointment, and I kept strumming until I had memorized the finger placement.

“Can you look up the song and play it for me?” I asked him. I heard the tapping of fingers on a screen and soon the song filled the room. I listened carefully to the guitar playing and once the song was finished, I tried it out on the guitar in my hands. Sure, I screwed up a couple of times, but surprisingly I played most of the chords correctly.

“Damn, you still have the skills; I’ve always been jealous of how you could just listen to a song and be able to play it perfectly.” Niall admitted.

“Well that doesn’t do shit if I don’t know what fret I need to put my fingers on,” I countered.

“You’ll get the hang of it, I’m sure.” Niall said and I shrugged. “What about if you put some type of markers on the neck of the guitar, that way you could tell which fret was which.”

I thought about that for a minute, “That’s actually a good idea. But what could I use that wouldn’t interfere with the strings?”

“You could put some sort of raised sticker on the back of the neck because your thumb is always back there,” Niall suggested.

I grinned, “That’s actually a brilliant idea!” I set the guitar aside and launched myself towards him for a hug and knocked him back onto the bed. “This is going to be cool; I cannot wait!”

He put his hands on my side while laughing at me, “Do you want to go out and look for something to use?”

I nodded my head vigorously, “Yes! Yes, absolutely yes! If you get changed in the bathroom I’ll change in here. I don’t trust the bathroom after I fell in there.” I let go of Niall so he could get up.

“Fine; you are very pushy.” Niall said. “But I’ll go, but only because you told me to.”

My cheeks felt warm and I turned to get off the bed and grab my clothes. I found the bag and pulled out the change of clothes I had packed. I was about to pull off my pajama T-shirt when I felt someone watching me. “Niall, get the hell out of here before I kick you in the balls!” I yelled. It stayed silent and I turned around with my hands on my hips. “Niall. Out. NOW.” I pointed towards the door. I took a step forward and Niall finally sighed in defeat.

“Fine, I’m going! Can’t blame a guy for trying,” he mumbled.

After I heard the door close, I shook my head at Niall. He never did things like that and it was confusing me. Niall would act friendly one minute then flirty the next; if he was trying to send me mixed signals, it was working.

I changed into camouflaged skinny jeans, a loose white button down, denim jacket and black combat boots. There was a knock on the door and I heard Niall walk back in. “Ready?” he asked.

“Yes, sir. Let’s do this,” I said.

We went out to his car and he started it. “Where should we go to find these things?” Niall asked.

“Uh, a craft store? I’m sure we’ll be able to find something to use in there.” I suggested.

“Sounds good,” Niall replied. “What guitar are you going to use?”

“I have absolutely no idea; I was thinking about asking mom to lend me money and then I can pay her back,” I said. He made a noncommittal noise, but kept driving. We arrived at the store, got out of the car and went into the store. Niall searched for plausible things to use on the guitar and he would hand them to me and I would feel it and see if it would work when I played the guitar. He must have handed me 20 packages of craft items before I finally found one I thought would work. They were these hard, plastic bubbles that had glue on the back.

“Now where are we going?” I asked him once we were back in the car.

“Someplace I think you’ll enjoy,” Niall said.

“When did you become so cryptic?” I asked.

“Since you became nosy,” he argued. I sighed and sat back into the passenger seat; once he had a surprise in mind, he wouldn’t say anything.

The car stopped and he brought me into a store. I could hear bits and pieces of music coming from different parts of the store; it sounded like a mix of piano, drums and guitar.

“Niall, what’s up man? I haven’t seen you in a while,” a new voice said.

“I know, but I haven’t needed any new instruments; the ones you’ve sold me are still in amazing condition.” Niall answered and I heard them clap each other on the back.

Suddenly all the pieces fit together; Niall was planning on buying me a guitar of my own. And he didn’t tell me because he knew I’d refuse. And he was right. “Niall, I’m not letting you buy me a guitar,” I objected. “That’s not happening.”

“Yes it is and you can’t stop me.” Niall said. “Let me do this for you.” I shook my head. “At least as a present for going on tour with us.” He pleaded.

“It’s too much,” I complained.

“Do you really think I can’t afford it?” Niall asked.

“No, I know you can, but I don’t want you spending money on me.” I told him.

“Too bad; I’m doing it anyways. And if you don’t want a ridiculous looking guitar that you can’t even hold, you might want to help pick it out.” Niall scolded. I crossed my arms knowing he won this round, but I will be paying him back somehow, probably with food. “Now Sean, what do you recommend for my Kodie here?”

“I’d recommend something a bit smaller than the normal guitar because females tend to have smaller hands and a smaller arm span than men. This one here, the Gibson Les Paul Goddess, has a reduced body size, but has as much power as a normal guitar. Why don’t you try it out?” Sean explained to us. He placed the guitar in my hands. It was lightweight which was nice and my hand could easily fit on the neck. I rested the guitar against my leg and strummed a few chords; it sounded really good.

“How do you like it?” Niall asked.

“It’s nice; I like it.” I answered.

“And it’s blue, your favorite color; it’s a darker shade on the outside and fades to baby blue towards the middle.” Niall described the guitar to me. “I’ll take it.” He took the guitar from me and handed it back to Sean. “And I’d like a case for it too.”

“No, Niall, that is really too much. I can’t let you buy this for me,” I argued.

“I can and I will,” Niall said. I was about to say something else, but he covered my mouth with his hand. “Kodes, be quiet. It’s done and over with and no matter what you say, I’m not going to change my mind.”

“Shut it,” Niall laughed. I pouted and he just laughed more.

“Here you go; come back anytime,” Sean said.

“Thank you so much,” I said.

Niall took my hand and walked me to the car, “I know that you don’t really like people buying you things, but you need to practice and this is the perfect way.”

“I know and I appreciate you buying it for me even though it was unnecessary,” I told him. “At least let me do something for you; maybe by baking some cookies…”

“YES!” Niall shouted.

“You want them; you’re going to have to work for it. I’ll need your help baking your favorite cookies, chocolate chip.” I said.

“Aye, aye captain! Anything you need, I shall help.” Niall replied.

“Now add three quarters of a cup of sugar in and after add a teaspoon of vanilla extract.” I instructed.

“Done and done.” Niall dutifully replied.

I turned the mixer on and felt Niall breathing on my neck. “Is it mixed?”

“Okay,” I hit the button to release the beaters and grabbed a knife to scrape off the extra dough. I gave one to Niall and the other was for me.

“This is the best part!” Niall said.

“Now help me mix the chocolate chips in,” I told him. I began stirring the dough, moving from the bottom to make sure the chocolate chips were mixed in. Niall’s mixing spoon kept hitting mine, “Will you watch it?”

“Nope,” he answered before wiping the spoon against my nose, covering it in cookie dough. My mouth dropped open; I don’t know why I should be surprised.

“If you want any of these cookies you will take that back!” I demanded, wiping the dough off of my nose.

“I don’t think so,” Niall cackled and I picked up a piece of cookie dough and threw it in his general direction. “Hah! Missed me!”

“No shit Sherlock, I’m blind and you can move out of the way.” I retorted. “You must be a fucking ninja to dodge a cookie dough ball thrown by a blind girl.”
