Kodie’s POV

I wake up, my world dark. Not that it’s a surprise or anything. I’m blind. I haven’t been blind my entire life, just for the past 6 months. The doctor’s say I had some type of eye disease that just got worse until my eyesight finally disappeared. I cannot lie when I say that it was really difficult to adjust to not being able to see anything.

But throughout it all, my family and friends were there for me. I could not ask for anyone better to have in my life. Especially my two best friends. Rose and Niall. And yes I mean Niall from One Direction. I am quite proud to be able to call him my best friend. We were next door neighbors in Mullingar and were the closest of friends. When he auditioned and made it through on the X-Factor, I couldn’t have been happier. Niall and I talked throughout the entire show and he has never forgotten about me.

The only difficult thing for us was when he had to move to London so he could be with his band mates so they could record more tracks. He never stopped texting, calling or Skyping me. I had always wanted to attend the university in London, so I applied and was accepted. My first year there was amazing. I met Rose, because she was my roommate, and we became closer than sisters. We room together again this year and ever since I lost my eyesight, she has been right by my side. Rosa also helps me pick out my clothes and what to wear.

Now I’m walking to a little café not far from the dorm rooms. I come here so often that all the employees know me by name and know my order. I had the layout of the café memorized so I don’t have to use my walking stick all the time. I knew that as soon as people saw me using the walking stick, they would give me a wide berth. I mean just because I’m blind doesn’t mean I am incapable of walking down the sidewalk.

I walk through the doors to the café and hear my name being called. “Hey, Derek. How are you?” I called to him as I made my way to me usual table. Derek always worked the morning shift and he was kind enough to bring my drink to my table. I mean I like to be independent, but I didn’t want to take that chance with hot coffee in my hands.

I hear footsteps and the scraping of the chair opposite me being pulled out. “Here you go, Kodie.” Derek said. I slowly reach my fingers out so I don’t knock the coffee cup over. I feel the warmth on my hands and bring it up to my mouth. “What’s new with you?” Derek asked.

“Not much. I have exams coming up in a week, so I’m busy studying for those and that is pretty much it. Nothing huge happens to me.” I replied.

“Hmm…well I know you will do well on the exams, you always do.” Derek said encouragingly and I smiled at him appreciatively.

We sat in silence for a few minutes, me sipping my coffee occasionally. I adjusted the sunglasses on my nose. I learned that I should wear sunglasses because of the UV lights from the sun will eventually hurt my eyes.

“HEY!” Derek exclaimed suddenly. I flinched at the sudden loud noise, but turned to face him, “What?”

“Niall is back in London!” He said. I spit out the mouthful of coffee, on what I assumed was Derek because he yelped.

“Geez Kodie. Watch where you spit!” Derek said jokingly.

“S-sorry.” I managed to get out through coughs. You have got to be kidding me. Niall was coming to London and I hadn’t told him that I lost my sight. We talked all the time, but I felt that I should tell him when we were face to face, not when he was touring around the world. Oh God, how am I going to tell him?
