Blinded By You

6 months ago, I lost my eyesight. But life goes on, I attend university in London and one of my best friend's is Niall Horan, from One Direction. But he doesn't know I'm blind. Will he hate me when I tell him? Will he treat me the same? Will I fall for one of his bandmates...

36. Attempts & Realizations

Kodie’s POV

After we finished the Live Stream, I recorded and uploaded a video explaining the details of how to enter and win the contest. Rose helped me to upload it and once that was done, she began making dinner. Usually she would go out on Valentine’s Day, but this year since we were both single we decided to spend the night together and watch cheesy movies.

“Niall! Give me back my chocolate!” I whined.

“I don’t think so!” He cackled. I dug my feet into the ground as he tried to get out of my grip. “I’m hungry, let me eat in peace, woman.”

“Never!” I yelled. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I jumped and landed on top of Niall. We both fell to the ground, Niall landing below me. I grasped his hands and wrenched the chocolate bar out of his hands. “Hah!” I shouted happily.

“Whoa, I leave for 10 minutes to cook and you guys are trying to rip each other’s clothes off.” I can picture her shaking her head. “I think I should leave before it gets PG-13.”

I furrowed my brows, confused by her words. Then I realized that I was straddling Niall, sitting on his stomach. “He stole my chocolate,” I pouted. “And I specifically told him not to!”

“Uh huh, I’ll pretend like I believe that.” I just knew she was smirking at us. “Meanwhile, dinner is served.”

“Coming,” I replied. I turned back to Niall who was sitting silently below me. “Shall we?”

“I quite like this position,” Niall answered cheekily and I could feel my cheeks heating up. Niall never flirted with me; that was a line we were sure never to cross. But for some reason, my heart fluttered and try as I might I couldn’t shake the feeling.

“Come on you, let’s eat.” I said choosing to ignore his remark. I stood up and dusted myself off.

Niall groaned, “Can you help me up?”

I shook my head at him, but held out a hand anyways. “Lazy ass,” I muttered as I heaved him up from the floor.

“Excuse me; what was that?” Niall asked.

“Oh, nothing. Why would you think I said anything? That doesn’t sound like me at all; I’m as innocent as can be.” I put on a small smile.

Niall snorted, “Innocent my ass.”

“Fine then, no food for you,” I shrugged.

“What? No!” Niall howled.

“You’re such a baby,” I laughed.

“What is with all the name calling?” Niall asked. “You seem to be extra sassy today.”

I smiled as I walked to the kitchen, “I’ve been taking lessons from Louis, didn’t you know? I think that it’s working, don’t you?” I heard the clink as Rose placed a plate in front of me filled with delicious smelling pasta. What more could you ask for than a nice Italian dinner with your two best friends on Valentine’s Day?

After we had finished eating, it was time for the part I couldn’t wait for.

Cheesy, romantic movies.

The first movie was Rose’s choice. “What girly movie are we going to watch?” Niall asked. I picked up the DVD case and showed him, it was How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I wrapped myself in the blanket draped over the back of the sofa and cuddled up into the cushions. I felt the couch dip and I could tell it was Niall from the air in between us. I don’t know how to explain it, but I could tell who was near me based on what I felt. Warmth radiated off of Niall and surrounded the two us. “Do we really have to watch this?” he whined.

I nodded, “You came over willingly so now you’re stuck doing what we want to do. After all, we’re the girls. We deserved to be pampered on Valentine’s Day.”

“In that case,” Niall said before picking me up and cocooning me in the blanket. He wrapped me so tightly that I couldn’t move. I struggled against my bindings, but still nothing. The couch dipped as he sat back down and settled my head on his lap.

Oh, God.

I heard the movie playing, but all my mind could register was the proximity between Niall and I. “Can you take my glasses off, it’s too uncomfortable to lay with them.” I asked him.

“Of course,” Niall answered.

I shut my eyes as he pulled them off, “Thanks.” Niall slowly ran his fingers through my hair causing me to let out a sigh of contentment. I don’t know what it was, but Niall had a calming effect on me. No matter how angry I was, he was the only one who could calm me down.

The noise of the movie faded into the background as I fell asleep in Niall’s lap.

Tuesday afternoon found me walking across campus to get to my business lecture. It was windy out causing my scarf to repeatedly slap me across the face. “Argh!” I grumbled trying to get the scarf out of my face. But it was extremely hard seeing as my hair was mixing with the scarf and instead of pulling the scarf, I pulled my hair instead.

“Need some help?” a familiar voice asked.

I turned in the direction of the voice and smiled. “Jason--,” I coughed and spit out my own hair that I almost swallowed. “Sorry…how have you been?”

“Swamped from so many essays; how about you?” Jason replied. I could sympathize; this week alone, I had finished four term papers.

“Busy, definitely busy.” Jason was in a couple of my marketing classes, including the one I was heading to right now. We weren’t exactly close friends, but he was really nice and helped me if I was ever stuck on a topic in class.

I reached out for the door, but he beat me to it and held it open for me. “Hey Kodie, can I ask you something?” Jason asked.

“I was wondering if maybe you wanted to grab coffee later today,” he said in a low voice.

I froze, not sure how to respond. The last date didn’t turn out so well and even though I knew Jason wasn’t capable of being that mean to anybody, I didn’t want to go through that again.

But, Niall always told me I can’t live my life in fear. That’s something I lived by; I have no idea how else I would’ve gotten through the first few months of blindness without his words. So, I decided to take the jump and go for it. “That’d be great.” I answered him with a smile.

Jason let out a breath, “You had me scared for a minute.”

“I’m sorry,” I let out a small laugh. “What time did you want to meet?”

He thought as we walked into the lecture room. “I have class until 6:30, so how about I pick you up at 7?”

I nodded and smiled, “Sounds great.”

“Awesome,” Jason let out.

“Rose, get your ass in here and help me out! I don’t want to look like a mess,” I called out. Even though I may not be completely in love with the idea of going out on this date tonight, I still wanted to look my best.

“I’m coming!” She yelled back. “Calm your tits!”

“My tits cannot be tamed!” I shouted back at her.

I heard footsteps enter my room and stop in front of me. “You rang?”

“Yes, I did. Does what I’m wearing look alright?” I twirled in a circle.

Rose began clapping, “I am proud of you. You dressed yourself and it doesn’t look like a two year old dressed you.”

“That wasn’t very nice,” I pouted.

“I’m just joking. You look very nice,” Rose told me.

“Thanks, but can you help me with my lipstick.” I asked. “I’d really rather not look like the Joker and scare Jason away.”

Rose laughed, but made her way towards me. “Of course; what color would you like tonight?”

“How about the coral stain that you bought for me a week ago?” I suggested.

Rose gave a ‘mhmm’ and applied the color to my lips. “There. You won’t be looking like The Joker tonight.”

I scowled at her and then smiled. “Thanks babe.” At that moment, the doorbell rang. Huh, Jason’s early; it’s only 6:45. I walked over to the door and opened it.

“Kodie,” a different voice than the one I was expecting said.

My stomach dropped and then I became angry as I recognized that voice.

“Harry, what the hell are you doing here?” I snapped.

“I know you probably don’t want to talk to me but--,”

I cut him off, “You’re right. I don’t. I don’t want to listen to some bullshit explanation for why you made a bet to see if you could get in my pants.”

“Can I explain?” Harry begged.

“Why? So you can lie to me yet again?” I snarled.

“No, of course not. I just need you to know the whole story and then you can go back to hating me. I don’t blame you; I’d hate me too.” Harry pleaded.

“You have about 30 seconds,” I told him.

“This got out of hand way too quickly,” Harry said and I could imagine that he was tugging at his curls as he usually did when he was stressed. “It did start off as a bet, but after a week I completely forgot about the bet. I could only think of you and how happy I was when I spent time with you. You made me happy and I need you to know that I never meant to hurt you; that is the last thing I ever wanted to do. You made me fall for you; you made me fall harder than I have for any other girl. And I am truly sorry for hurting you.”

I stayed silent after his revelation trying to process what he just told me; I pinched my nose in frustration. Why, why did this happen to me? I’m trying to be mad at him and I am because what he did to me was just wrong and deceitful. But he comes here and gives me a sweet and sincere apology. I know he’s sincere from the tone of his voice, but how am I supposed to go back to trusting him? I trusted him and look where that got me.

“Harry…I appreciate the apology, but I don’t think I can trust you again.” I said softly and he remained quiet. “You must understand why I can’t give you my trust.”

“I do, but I thought we could forget it ever happened and go back to how things were.” Harry told me.

I shook my head, “Things will never be the same between us, even if I wish we could go back to normal. I don’t think we’ll ever be able to go back how we were. We can try and be friends, but I still need space to figure things out, alright.”

He let out a breath, “Okay.” I made sure I heard him walk away before I closed the door.

“What was that about?” Rose asked and I jumped.

“Geez, just give me a heart attack, no big deal.” I tried to get my heartbeat to return to normal. “And that was Harry; he came over to apologize.”

“Are you fucking kidding me? He was here and you didn’t let me rip him limb from limb?!” Rosie shouted.

I smiled at her, “Hey, I didn’t get to beat Dan like a piñata so you don’t get to tear Harry apart. It’s only fair.”  Before she could say anything the doorbell rang again. “I hope that’s Jason,” I muttered. I opened the door.

“Hi Kodie,” Jason greeted me.

“Hi,” I answered.

“Are you ready?”

“Yeah, just let me grab my coat.” I quickly reached behind the door and hit Rose’s arm which was holding out my jacket.

“He’s cute,” she whispered before ushering me out of the door.

“Let’s go,” I said, linking arms with him.

We walked together out of the flat and down to his car. “I know this little café that I thought we could go to.”

“Sounds great,” I gave him a smile.

As we drove he turned on the radio Kiss You came through the speakers. I shook my head ruefully, wherever I went those boys followed. I laughed to myself as Jason started singing along. “I didn’t peg you as the type to listen to One Direction.”

“What can I say? They have some really good songs,” Jason admitted. I laughed and began to sing with him. When it came to Niall’s part I sang just a little bit louder than normal; his line was possibly the cutest in the song.

We arrived at the café and like a gentlemen he opened the door for me. He grasped my hand and we walked into the café. “Well, look who it is. Haven’t seen you in a while,” Derek said.

“I’m sorry, I’ve just been a little bit busy,” I answered.

“You know each other?” Jason asked.

“Yeah, I come here pretty often.” I replied.

“I thought no one knew about this place,” Jason said dejectedly.

“Gee thanks, dude.” Derek joked.

“I-I didn’t mean it like that,” Jason stuttered.

I gently pushed Jason towards a table. “Don’t mind him, he’s just cranky. And I really like this café, this is perfect.” I reassured him.

Derek brought over our orders and Jason and I talked over tea and muffins. It was comfortable talking to him, but I didn’t feel the sparks that everyone talked about. Thoughts floated through my mind and I barely noticed when we arrived back at my flat. Jason walked me up to my door and my thoughts cleared as I felt him step closer to me.

I hated to hurt him, but I couldn’t lead him on. “Jason, I’m sorry, but I can’t. You’re really nice, but I don’t think you’re the right guy for me.”

“That’s okay, I had a feeling you weren’t all there today. I’m glad I asked you though,” Jason said.

“I am too. It’s too soon to say now, but I think I might know a nice girl for you if you ever want me to set you up,” I said.

“I’ll be sure to let you know,” Jason told me before leaning down and kissing my cheek. “See you in class.”

“Bye,” I gave him a small wave.

When I walked into my flat, I didn’t hear any noises so I assumed that Rose had gone to bed early to watch TV in her room. I went to my room and changed into my pajamas. As I lay in bed, I thought about why I didn’t feel anything while I was out with Jason. He had grabbed my hand and I didn’t feel tingles shoot up my arm.

Jason’s touch felt foreign; my hand didn’t fit well in his. Even though I knew that was stupid, I couldn’t help, but think it was true. People always say that when they’re with the person they care about, their hands fit together like puzzle pieces, as cliché as that sounds. And I liked Jason; he was as nice as they come. So why didn’t it feel like that?

But the more I thought about it, I noticed that there was someone who gave me tingles when their skin came in contact with mine. There was someone whose hand fit almost effortlessly with mine. There was someone who I loved to spend time with no matter what.

The realization hit me like a ton of bricks.

That someone was Niall.
