23. Chapter Twenty Three: Birthday - Part 1

HAYDEN WAS GONE when I woke up but the sheets were warm where he had been laying. Glancing over at the window I saw that it was slightly open. Something vibrated near my head and I turned to find my phone on the pillow.

Still mad at me? H.

I bit my bottom lip to stop myself from smiling as I replied. No.

:)

Thanks for staying with me last night.

My alarm went off so I jumped out of bed and started getting ready. I yanked on some jeans and a t-shirt. My mobile buzzed again as I brushed my hair.

My pleasure. Let me know if you want me to do it again ;) H.

Flushing, I shoved my phone in my pocket and went downstairs for breakfast.

“You’re in a good mood today,” Lisa commented as we sat around counting down the time to our last class.

“Hmm?” I looked up from my phone. She was eyeing me suspiciously from across the table.

“Who are you texting?” Lisa demanded, stretching an arm across the table.

Moving out of her reach, I said, “No one.”

“It’s Hayden isn’t it?”

I didn’t reply. I was too busy trying to explain to Hayden why he shouldn’t talk to a friend of his who was an art gallery owner about exhibiting some of my drawings.

“You’re such a hypocrite,” Lisa muttered, scratching at the table with her key.

“Gee thanks.” It was true though; I had told Lisa to stay away from Hayden and lately I seemed to be spending all of my time with him. “I’m sorry.”

Grinning, she said, “That’s okay. You can have Hayden. I’ve got Tommy.”

“What does that mean?” I asked worried.

Lisa mimed zipping her lips shut and throwing away the key.

I woke up the next day to the smell of pancakes. I inhaled deeply and stretched my legs. My phone was by my hand and I checked it to find that I had a text from Hayden already.

Happy Birthday, Selena. H.

Jumping when my alarm sounded I sent a quick reply.

Thanks :)

I dressed in a knee-length jean skirt and a light, jade coloured top with lace trim. I was putting a necklace on when I got another message.

Am I allowed to come to your birthday meal tonight? H.

Only if you bring me a present :)

I’ll see what I can do… ;) H.

Got to go. Pancakes for breakfast!

I took the steps two at a time as I made my way downstairs.

“Happy birthday Selena!” Dad, Lisa and Kayleigh chorused as I entered the kitchen.

Thanking them I sat down at the table.

“Ready for your birthday pancakes?” Dad asked with a smile.

“You bet!” I grinned.

The pancakes were served with cookies and cream ice cream and it didn’t take long for me to devour them.

Kayleigh kissed my head, saying, “Are you sure you want to wait until after college to open your presents?”

I nodded and after I had brushed my teeth, Lisa and I got ready to leave. A horn sounded from outside and peered out the window to see Ash waving at me from inside his car.

“Looks like Ash is giving us a ride,” I said, swinging my bag on my shoulder.

“Good,” Lisa replied with a sigh. “This cast is driving me crazy. I can’t wait to get it off!”

“You’ve still got a few weeks to go.”

We made our way down the drive and I hopped into the passenger’s seat.

“Hey, birthday girl,” Ash said with a grin as he pulled me into a hug. “I’ll bring your present over later.”

“Thanks. You didn’t have to take us to college you know.”

Shrugging, he waited for Lisa and me to put our seatbelts on before driving away.

“Aww man I forgot my water bottle.” Lisa groaned as she searched her bag. “Would you mind getting me one from the vending machine?” She batted her eyes at me.

I glanced at my watch. I had ten minutes before my Art class started. “Why can’t you get it?”

Lisa gestured to her leg. “Please, Selena.”

“Fine.”

The vending machine was down the hallway and around the corner so I quickly headed in that direction, not wanting to be late for class. There were only a few other students milling around so I didn’t have to queue to use the machine. I scanned the drinks and reached in my bag for my wallet.

A pair of hands covered my eyes.

“Guess who.”

Warm breath tickled my neck and a chest pressed against my back.

“Father Christmas?”

Hayden’s mouth moved closer to my skin as he asked, “Are you calling me fat?”

“No.” I bit my lip to stop myself from laughing.

“You are, aren’t you?” Hayden’s hands dropped to my stomach and he tickled me.

Giggling, I tried to push him away. “Stop it!”

“That will teach you to call me fat,” he said, spinning me around so that I was facing him.

“What are you doing here?” I asked as Hayden brushed some hair behind my ear.

“Don’t you remember me saying that you were going to spend the day with me?” He smiled.

“Hayden, I can’t! I’ve got college! How did you even know where I was?”

“Lisa said that you would be here,” Hayden replied. He tilted his head to the side thoughtfully. “You would rather be stuck in classes then doing something with me?”

I leaned back against the vending machine feeling slightly overwhelmed. “Lisa planned this?”

Taking my hands in his, Hayden replied, “I asked her to help me.” He ran a thumb over my fingers. “Come on, it’s just one day. You deserve to have fun on your birthday.” Hayden drew me closer looking serious. “You know I’m not going to take no for an answer.”

I hesitated. College was pretty boring at the moment and the thought of escaping for a day was very tempting. Hayden was staring at me intently, waiting for me to give in.

“Alright,” I said with a sigh.

He kissed my hair, murmuring, “You won’t regret it.”
