26. Chapter Twenty Six: Apologies and Dessert

“ARE YOU GOING to tell me what that was all about?”

Lifting my head from my pillow I saw Lisa sitting beside me on my bed.

“All what?” I asked, rolling onto my side.

Lisa gave me an expression that said ‘cut the crap’. “Your arguments with Ash and Hayden. It looked pretty intense. Dad wanted to go out and see what was going on but I stopped him. You totally owe me for that by the way.”

“It was a misunderstanding.”

“Selena, Ash looked seriously pissed off. What did he say to you?” she said concerned.

I chewed my bottom lip, wondering what to say.

“He really doesn’t like Hayden.” I sat up and narrowed my eyes. “Why was Ash there anyway?”

“I invited him.” Lisa smiled.

“Because you knew Hayden would be there?” She nodded and I groaned. “Lisa that was probably the worst thing you could have done.”

Sheepish, she apologised, “Sorry, I didn’t know that would happen. So why were you upset with Hayden?”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” I mumbled, avoiding her gaze.

“It looked like you two made up anyway.” I didn’t reply so Lisa stood up, saying, “If you want to tell me about it let me know.”

Once she had left I changed into some pyjamas and climbed into bed. Even though it was late I couldn’t sleep. I stared at the ceiling for a while before grabbing my phone and texting Hayden.

I’m sorry for shouting at you. Let me make it up to you. I have a half day tomorrow and I know a place that does the best cookie dough dessert ever.

Hayden’s reply arrived straight away. Seeing as dessert is involved how can I resist? H.

Meet me at Antonio’s at half one. Thank you again for the necklace. It’s beautiful. I haven’t taken it off. I played with the pendant absently.

You’re welcome, Selena. Are you alright? Do you want me to come over? H.

The thought of falling asleep wrapped in Hayden’s arms again made my stomach flutter. It probably wasn’t a good idea though.

I’m okay. Not tonight. See you tomorrow x

Sweet dreams, Selena. H.

Hayden was already waiting outside Antonio’s when I got there.

“Hey,” I greeted him feeling slightly awkward seeing as the last time I had seen Hayden I’d shouted at him.

He surprised me by pulling me into a hug. “Good afternoon, Selena.”

“Umm hi,” I said as I waited for Hayden to release me. “How’s your day going?”

Letting go of me, he touched my cheek, saying, “Better now.”

“Shall we go in?” I asked, fighting the urge to smile.

Hayden placed a hand on the small of my back and followed me inside. Antonio’s was primarily a takeaway pizza shop but he also made the most delicious desserts known to man. Seeing as it wasn’t a restaurant there wasn’t much room inside and apart from the long, white counter that blocked off the kitchen, there were only two tables for customers.

“Go sit down and I’ll order our food,” I told Hayden.

He kissed my hair and went and sat at the table beside the window. Walking over to the counter, I could hear Tony, the proprietor, arguing with someone in the kitchen. I coughed loudly and they fell silent.

“Bella Selena!” he cried, appearing in the blink of an eye. “What a pleasure to see you! What can Antonio do for you today?”

Smiling, I rolled my eyes. Tony or ‘Antonio’ had been born in Italy but his parents had moved to England when he had been young. To attract more customers he put on a fake Italian accent and had decorated the shop with Italian flags. He was tall with dark hair and tanned skin and a large belly.

“Two cookie dough explosions please.” It wasn’t a particularly Italian dessert but fortunately Antonio’s sold it.

“Two?” he repeated with a grin. “You eat so many of those that you’ll be as fat as me soon.” Tony slapped his stomach laughing.

“They’re not both for me. One is for my friend,” I told him, gesturing to Hayden who was staring out of the window with a serious expression.

Resting his arms on the counter, Tony examined Hayden. “He’s a lot older than you.”

“He’s younger than he looks,” I said, shifting uncomfortably.

Tony grunted and stood up. “You want a drink with your desserts?”

I ordered two bottles of water and after paying I sat down opposite Hayden. He turned to face me and placed his hand on top of mine.

“I want to apologise again-”

Interrupting me, Hayden said gently, “You don’t have to keep saying sorry, Selena. I understand how . . . confusing this must be for you.”

I dropped my gaze to our hands and nodded. It was confusing but I knew that my words had hurt him, especially when I had told Hayden that I never wanted to see him again. He had been so distraught that just thinking about it made my throat constrict.

“Are you doing anything after work on Friday?” Hayden asked bringing me back to the present.

I opened my drink and took a swig. “No, I don’t think so. Why?”

Turning over my hand, he traced the lines on my skin making it tingle pleasantly, and said, “I was wondering if you would like to go on a date with me.”

“A date?”

“Yes, a date,” Hayden replied with a grin.

“Umm okay, that would be umm nice.” I dropped my head and my hair fell across my face, hopefully concealing how flustered I was feeling.

“Selena,” he said amused as he brushed my hair behind my ear. “What is it?”

“I’ve never been on a date before,” I mumbled.

Hayden and I had done stuff alone together before, like now for example, but that had just been as friends. Although we had nearly kissed. Twice. Being on a date made it seem more official though and more real. What the hell was I going to wear?

Fortunately Tony arrived with our desserts distracting me and my thoughts became preoccupied with the mountain of cookie dough, cream and chocolate in front of me.
