29. Chapter Twenty Nine: Visitors

“WHAT THE HELL is Lisa doing at a party?” I cried angrily as I stared out the car window. “She’s supposed to be at a sleepover.”

Lisa had been drunk when she called me. Despite the loud music, I had been able to hear her slurred words. She was at Tommy’s house. Which could only be a bad thing.

Hayden stopped the car and I jumped out.

“Don’t worry,” Hayden said as we hurried down the drive towards the huge house. “I’m sure Lisa is fine.”

The door was open and light streamed out. My chest vibrated from the bass that was pounding from the living room. A couple were making out in the doorway and I barged passed them. I concentrated on finding Lisa. I jumped up and down as I searched the packed living room. She wasn’t there or in the hallway so I went to the kitchen.

I froze.

Ash and Marie were there. Practically eating each other’s faces.

Nauseous, I span around and bumped into Hayden.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, seeing my expression.

“I can’t find Lisa,” I replied, fighting back tears.

“She’s not in the dining room. Have you looked upstairs?”

I blanched and stared at the ceiling. If Lisa had gone upstairs things were worse than I’d thought.

Tearing up the stairs, I threw open the first door that I came across. Lisa was lying on a bed topless and Tommy was taking a photo.

“What the hell are you doing?” I shrieked launching myself at him. I snatched the phone from Tommy and flung it on the floor before stamping my foot down on it until it was in hundreds of pieces.

Tommy scrambled to leave the room but Hayden blocked the doorway, his arms crossed. Pulling Lisa’s top on I realised that she was unconscious.

“What did you do to her?” I hissed.

Hayden banged Tommy’s head on the wall, growling, “Answer her.”

“Okay, okay. She’s been drinking.”

Tommy’s head collided with the wall again.

“Cut it out man! I gave her a pill okay? She’ll be fine in a few hours.”

I exchanged a glance with Hayden and he released Tommy. I stormed over to the scumbag and punched him before kneeing him in the groin.

“Stay the hell away from my sister you asshole!”

Tommy fell to the carpet groaning.

“Remind me not to piss you off,” Hayden said with a smile as he lifted Lisa into his arms.

Lisa was slumped in the back seats as we returned to Hayden’s flat. Hayden placed her on his bed before joining me in the living room.

“Do you think she’s okay?” I asked, pacing the room. “Should we take her to the hospital?”

Drawing me into his arms, Hayden kissed my head, saying, “I think she just needs to sleep it off. Her pulse is normal.”

“Oh God.” I rested my head on his chest. “No wonder she was so excited about going to Amy’s house. I should have known she was up to something.”

“It’s not your fault.”

“Maybe now she’ll be more careful,” I said hopefully.

A knock on the door made me jump. A dark look crossed Hayden’s face.

“Open up!” A voice roared. “I know you’re in there! I saw you!”

Crap. It was Ash.

Had he followed us?

“Let me in!” He banged on the door again.

“What should we do?” I asked Hayden anxiously.

Sighing he ran a hand through his hair and replied, “He’s probably not going to leave until we let him in. Plus my neighbours might call the police about the noise if we don’t.”

“What?” I demanded, opening the door. “What are you doing here?”

Obviously drunk, Ash stumbled towards me. “I saw you with him and I followed you.” He pointed a finger at Hayden who was stood next to me. “You told me that you were going to tell the police about him by now but here you are at his flat doing God knows what!”

I narrowed my eyes upon noticing the smudged lipstick on his cheek and lips and said, “We’re not doing anything. Lisa was passed out on Tommy’s bed while he took half-naked pictures of her but we stopped him and brought her back here. Why didn’t you look out for her Ash? You know what she’s like!”

Blanching, Ash muttered, “I didn’t know. I was busy.”

“Yeah I can tell that from your lipstick.” I crossed my arms and glared at him.

Ash wiped his mouth on the back of his hand, saying, “I’m not the one that’s in the wrong here, Sel. You seem to keep forgetting that the man beside you is a murderer! He needs to be stopped before you become another victim!”

“I would never hurt Selena,” Hayden growled. “I think you should go before I call the police.”

“No need. They’re already on their way,” Ash said smugly.

I gasped. Oh no.

“Ash please tell me you didn’t phone the police.” I clenched my hands into fists, resisting the urge to throttle him.

His brown eyes serious, he leaned towards me. His breath stank. “I’m saving your life, Selena.”

“No. You’re ruining it.”

Two police officers arrived a few minutes later. I told them that I had been the one to see the murderer twice, as well as draw the picture. It wasn’t Hayden. I repeated it over and over praying that they would believe me. Ash screamed that I was under Hayden’s spell, that I would be the next to die. Thankfully his drunken state convinced the police that Hayden was not the man they were after. They had to restrain Ash as they took him away.

I was exhausted when they left and dropped down onto the sofa.

“Thank you, Selena,” Hayden said, joining me.

“You’re welcome.” I leaned against him, closing my eyes.

My phone started vibrating.

“What now?” I groaned.

“Selena, where are you? You were supposed to be home half an hour ago.” Dad sounded angry.

“I’m so sorry, Dad. I . . . I’m at Amy’s with Lisa. I was going to phone you but I forgot.” I bit my lip as I waited for his reply.

“Alright, sweetheart, but next time let me know sooner. I’ll pick you both up at ten o’clock,” he said.

“Actually Amy’s mum said that she can drop us off.”

“Okay. See you tomorrow. Have fun.”

Ending the call I rubbed my face.

“That was quick thinking,” Hayden said, rubbing my arm.

“Is it alright if Lisa and I stay here tonight?” I asked, just wanting to curl up and fall asleep so that this day could end.

“Of course you can. I’ll sleep on the sofa.”

There was a tap on the door.

Hayden sighed heavily and stood up.

“Open up, Rhyker,” called a voice. “We know you’re in here.”

Cursing, Hayden turned to me. “Go in the bedroom. I’ll get rid of them.”

I did as he said and closed the door behind me. Hayden had seemed worried. I wondered who the visitors were. Lisa’s snoring drowned out the conversation that was happening in the other room. I pulled the duvet over my unconscious step-sister. I didn’t know if I should tell Dad and Kayleigh about what had happened.

Pushing my hair back, I opened Hayden’s wardrobe and pulled out a t-shirt. After changing into it, I sat down on the bed.

“Selena?” Hayden called, cracking the door open.

“Hey.” I smiled. “Are they gone?”

“Yes, fortunately.”

“Were they soul eaters?” I asked when he didn’t say anything else.

Moving over to me, Hayden took my hands, lifting me to my feet. “Yes,” he answered, stroking my jaw. “They don’t know you’re here or that I know you.” Hayden tugged the bottom of the t-shirt which fell half way down my thighs. “This suits you. I like seeing you in my clothes.” He lowered his mouth to my ear and whispered, “But I’d like to see you out of them too.”

Lisa snorted in her sleep.

Pressing my lips to Hayden’s, I said, “Maybe some other time. If you’re lucky.”

“Goodnight, Selena.”

When he had left I lay down on the bed beside Lisa. Despite how tired I was I couldn’t fall asleep. Whenever I closed my eyes I saw Ash all over Marie. It made my heart ache. Well screw him. Ash and I had been friends for years but we weren’t anymore, not after everything he’d done. Wiping my damp cheeks, I left the bedroom. Hayden was on the sofa half covered by a blanket which I slid under. He was dressed in only boxer shorts. The feel of Hayden’s skin on mine soothed me. He wrapped an arm around me, drawing me closer. My eyelids drifted shut and it wasn’t long before I was fast asleep.
