24. Chapter Twenty Four: Birthday - Part 2

HAYDEN DROVE ME to a spa half an hour from Newtown where I was pampered for the entire morning; I had a facial, a massage and a body wrap that smelled so strongly that it hurt my nose. I also had a manicure and pedicure, as well as a treatment on my hair that made it soft and shiny.

“Are you enjoying yourself so far?” Hayden asked as we sat down for lunch.

Our table was on a wooden deck beside a beautiful garden. There were only a few other people around. A waitress arrived with our food which Hayden must have ordered when he’d been waiting for me.

“I am thank you,” I replied with a smile. “It’s been really relaxing.”

“Aren’t you glad that you came with me?”

Pursing my lips, I said, “Ask me again later.”

Hayden smirked.

After we had finished lunch Hayden and I went for a walk in the gardens. He slipped his hand into mine as we descended the steps from the deck. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach when I glanced at Hayden and saw that he was watching me.

“What?” I asked with a small smile.

He said nothing but pulled me closer so that our shoulders were touching.

“This is such a beautiful place,” I said after five minutes of silence.

We paused by a pond covered with lily pads and Hayden positioned me in front of him, wrapping his arms around me. He rested his chin on my shoulder, his body pressed against mine. His silence was worrying me. Had I done something wrong?

“Hayden? Is everything okay?”

He placed a hand on my stomach and kissed my neck, making my skin tingle. “Yes, sorry I was just thinking.”

“What about?” I asked, turning to face him. Noses brushing, our breath mingled. Being so close to Hayden would have been uncomfortable for me in the past but lately I liked it. I was flattered by his attention even if a small voice in the back of my head insisted that it was only because I was a Halfling and I was therefore a novelty to him.

“Nothing important,” Hayden told me, touching his lips to my temple. I could feel him scowling as he said, “You smell all wrong. What did they do to you?”

I laughed, saying, “You’re the one that brought me here so really it’s your fault.”

“I guess I better do something about it then,” he said with a mischievous glint in his violet eyes.

The next thing I knew Hayden was dragging me into the pond. I gasped as the cold water hit me and gripped Hayden’s arms tightly. Blinking as we surfaced I spluttered and glared at him.

“What did you do that for?” I demanded, punching him in the chest.

With a grin Hayden leaned closer and moved a piece of hair that was sticking to my lips. “The smell is gone.”

“Yeah but now I smell like a freaking pond!” I cried, splashing him with water.

He wrapped his hands around my wrists and tugged me towards him, saying, “It’s an improvement.”

Someone coughed nearby. A security guard was standing beside the pond with his muscular arms folded against his chest.

“Thank you for today,” I said when Hayden pulled up outside my house. “Well except for the pond incident.”

Chuckling, he replied, “You’re welcome. I’ll be back as soon as I’ve had a shower and changed my clothes.”

I opened my door to leave and hesitated. Before I could change my mind I turned back around and kissed Hayden on the cheek. Then I practically ran inside.

It was mid-afternoon so Dad was still at work and Lisa was at college. Kayleigh, however, was at the house. I had no idea how she would react when she found out that I had skived my classes. I needn’t have worried though because she was asleep on the sofa. Smiling, I went upstairs where I had a nice hot shower which almost erased the memory of the freezing cold pond water. I dressed in a long, strapless dress as it was quite humid and was going to dry my hair with the hairdryer but didn’t want to wake Kayleigh, so I put my wet hair in a plait.

“I’m not going to be able to concentrate with all that skin on show.”

Hayden was stood in the doorway, his hands in the pockets of his low slung jeans. A fitted grey t-shirt covered his muscular chest. Realising that I was staring, I sat on the edge of my desk and forced my eyes to meet Hayden’s. He stepped towards me quickly, as if he couldn’t stand the space between us, and stopped in front of me. Hayden placed a hand either side of me and leaned in so that his nose was in my hair.

Inhaling, he said, “Much better.” He drew back so that his face was inches away from mine and licked his lips.

I shivered.

“Cold?” Hayden asked, trailing a soft finger along my arm.

“No,” I whispered my voice raspy.

He gazed at me for a while before lifting one of my hands up and kissing it. Hayden continued pressing his silky lips to my skin in a path of fire up my arm and across my collarbone. I gasped and arched my back to give him better access. Nuzzling my neck, Hayden’s tongue darted out to taste my skin. I grabbed his t-shirt and pulled him closer.

“Knock knock!” Lisa sing-songed as she bounded into the room.

Hayden sighed and rested his forehead on mine. We were both panting and he stroked my cheek, our eyes locked.

“Hello? I’m over here.”

“Yes, hello, Lisa,” I managed to say. “What do you want?” Couldn’t she see that Hayden and I were in the middle of something?

“Mum is making dinner and doesn’t want my help.” That would be because the last time Lisa ‘helped’ with the cooking our dinner had been reduced to charcoal. “I thought maybe you would want to watch something.”

Knowing Lisa she wasn’t going to leave so I said, “Sure.”

Hayden moved aside so that I could stand up and we headed downstairs, Lisa and Hayden falling behind me.

“The spa was a success then?” I heard Lisa say to Hayden.

I glanced back and he smiled at me as he replied, “You could say that.”
