The Boy Down The Street

Elani Chade (pronounced Elahni) is an extremely shy, timid girl, who is struggling through bulling at school. Her only true friend, Louis Tomlinson, is loud, popular and a jokester. They are complete opposites, but are inseparable. What happens when they start falling in love? Will it work out well, or will it break their friendship?

3. Walk in the park

Running? Why was she running? Why didn't she go up to him and say thank you and give him a hug like most people would? How ungrateful did it seem? Would Louis be angry?

Elani could think just about as straight as a circle. Her thoughts kept zooming in and then drifting off, getting muddled and making her head ache. For the rest of the day she sat at the back of the classroom, avoiding eye contact and not speaking. Bianca was scowling fiercely at her from the front and clenching her fists. Elani touched her side where a bruise was forming and squirmed. If Louis hadn't stopped the bullying she would have ended up as blue as a blueberry.

That afternoon Elani rushed over to Louis' house. She needed to say thank you and her jacket was still in the kitchen. She hesitated before knocking. What if he didn't answer? What if he didn't like her anymore? What if she lost her only friend? The thought was unbearable.

She knocked loudly three times, the noise echoing around the quiet street. Elani waited. The door didn't open.

In despair she knocked once more, then turned on her heel and walked back down the driveway sobbing.

'Wait! Elani- wait!'

Slowly she turned around. Louis stood there on the doorstep holding the door open and looking very surprised. 'Oh no, your covered in bruises, come inside.'

Elani paused. Then suddenly a whole wave of tears washed over her and she started cying uncontrollably. 'Don't laugh at me.' she pleaded, 'please don't laugh.'

Louis' eyes widened and he ran over. 'No, no! I'm not going to laugh at you. Calm down, it'll be fine, I'm here, oh your bruises.' He fussed over them, talking gently and calming her down. 'I'm on your side, I won't hurt you. Oh Ell, how long has this been going on?'

She just shook her head and looked at her feet. The pattern on the pavement was suddenly very interesting.

Louis put his arm around her, making her blush. 'Come on. Forget about everything that just happened. Its nice weather today. Lets go walk in the park.'

Elani's whole face lit up and she wiped the tears from her eyes, 'Yeah, let's go.'

Louis smiled and Elani couldn't help thinking how cute he was. Those blue eyes. The hair. The stripes on his top. And his strange obsession for carrots. She didn't even notice that she was smiling back. Louis made her happy just by being there for her.

They walked to the park in comfortable silence. Elani felt lucky for once, she had someone who she could trust with her entire life, someone who could make her trully happy. Even if she only had one friend like that, he was all she needed.

The park was soon in view, the sparkling lake, the playground and the small clusters of trees. Louis smiled as he remembered the memories he had with Elani when they were just kids. He had met her there by the swing, when her hat had gotten stuck in a tree.Even then she had still been scared and nervous.

Louis glanced at her. 'Yeah?'

She took a deep breath. 'Those things you said about me, did you mean it?'

'Of course I meant it. Why else would I say that?'

Elani looked up, and he could see tears forming in her eyes again. 'Even when you said I was pretty? And that you cared?'

Louis didn't know how to respond. Of course she was pretty. She was the prettiest girl in the world. And she didn't know? He shook his head. 'Why would you say that? Don't listen to Bianca Ell, she's just- stupid.'

Elani began sobbing. 'But she's so pretty, she has the latest clothes, and a boyfriend Lou. I won't ever get a boyfriend. Nobody likes me.'

'No!' Louis shook his head frantically and placed her down on a seat. Some people were already starting to look at them. 'It doesn't matter if she has the latest clothes, or has all this makeup to put on- she'll always be an idiot. But didn't I tell her you're the complete opposite? That your eyes are so pretty, and your smile? Because I really meant that. You're the prettiest girl in the world.'

Elani shook her head and cried into his chest. He held her close, playing with her hair and rubbing her back. Even when she cried she was beautiful.

They sat that way, looking over the lake as the sun began to set, and Elani began to shiver. Louis removed her gently from his chest. 'Its getting late. Do you want my jumper?'

Without waiting for a reply he took it off and put it around her shoulders, warming her. She gave a small smile, making the world spin.

'Thanks,' she said softly, 'for being there. I don't know why I ran away. I did it before I could think.'

Louis shifted closer and hugged her. 'I've got your back remember?' He said into her hair. 'I've always got your back.'
