1. The Boy Down The Street

Elani

Elani walked along the footpath, her hoodie up, her face twisted into a frown. Boy her life was miserable. She was having such a bad day. Her friends were bulling and excluding her and her parents were at work, leaving her older brother and younger sister to fight over the last piece of cake. Elani just needed to escape. She needed peace and quiet, someone who could comfort her, someone she could trust and talk to easily.  She needed a true friend. Luckily for her that friend lived just down the road.

She trudged down the driveway and hesitated. Then pulling the hood off her head, she knocked on the door. The door opened straight away, as if the person behind it had been expecting her. Louis stood smiling there like there was no tomorrow.

'Hey Elani.'

Elani's face lit up immediately. Just seeing him made her happy. Louis was cute. He had those special eyes that made you melt as soon as you looked into them. His brown hair was swept over his forehead, hands in his pockets and a jacket over his stripy top.

'Hey,' she replied, twirling her hair over her left shoulder, and smiling shyly at the ground.

'Come on in! I'm alone, so we can have the whole house to ourselves.'

Elani grinned and stepped inside into the coolness. Louis took her arm and lead her into the living room, making her blush. She hid her face in her hair so he couldn't see. Not noticing, Louis sat her down on the couch. Then he disappeared into the kitchen to get some carrots.

He came back, handed her a carrot and then sat beside her. Out of the corner of her eye, Elani could see him glancing at her.

'There's something wrong. I can see it.'

Elani looked up and shook her head. 'I'm fine.'

'No you're not. What's wrong?'

'Nothing. Nothing.'

Louis frowned in concern and bit his carrot. 'You sure you don't want to tell me? You know you can trust me with anything.'

'Yeah,' Elani smiled, 'I know. But honesty, it's just one of those days when everyone's against you. I'm fine.' She held her carrot in both hands and stared at it.

Louis nodded in understanding, knowing she wanted the subject to be dropped. 'Well I'm glad you came here. Did you want to watch a movie?'

Elani shrugged. 'Anything really.'

'We can order pizza?'

Elani grinned. She loved pizza. 'Yep.'

Louis laughed and nudged her jokingly. 'You came here to eat the pizza didn't you?'

Elani laughed along with him, letting down her guard for a second and winked. 'Pizza's to die for.'

Louis returned the wink and stood up. 'I'll order it now. Same as usual? Did you want me to take your jacket?'

Before she could say anything he swept his hand under her hair and gently took her jacket off for her, breaking the touch barrier. She blushed madly. 'Thanks,' she stammered.

'That's fine. I'll put it in the kitchen.' he opened the door and dissapeared again.

Elani sank back into the couch and nibbled on her carrot. From the kitchen he could hear Louis order the pizza, and she wondered what it would be like to have a boyfriend. Infact, that was why her friends were teasing her. Because she didn't have a boyfriend. But how was she to get one if she was so shy and nervous? And ugly, Elani thought. My friends are right.

Louis came in and put the phone down. 'I've called for the pizza.' He saw her, studied her expression and shook his head. 'You're upset,' he said sitting next to her and searching her face. 'What is it? Maybe I can help. Tell me,' he urged gently. He shuffled closer to her and leaned in. Elani could tell he cared. Probably the only one that really cared. She took a deep breath.

'My friends,' she mumbled, and stared at the ground, fighting tears.

'What are they doing?'

'Just- saying stuff.'

'Who?'

Elani shook her head. What would happen if she told him? What would happen if her friends found out? And she didn't want Louis to be involved.

With that Louis stopped and sank back into the couch. 'Hey, if you need to talk, you can tell me. Ok?' He didn't let her go anywhere until she answered.

'Ok,' she said shakily and nodded.

Louis stood up, gave her one of those stunning smiles and turned on the television.

'Remember,' he said, 'I've got your back.'

Elani looked up to his intense gaze and gave him a small smile. Why did he care about her, if no one else did? Was he faking?

Louis turned around and put a movie on. What film it was, Elani didn't even know. She just sat, staring at the screen, but not focusing. Instead she thought about her life, he school and her family. And Louis. She was fully aware that they were sitting very close to each other.

After a few minutes the pizza arrived. Elani dug into it hungrily. Louis brought some pepsi from the fridge and poured her some into a cup.

'Thanks.'

'That's ok.'

'No like, thanks for everything. Letting me come here and-' She cleaned her throat.

Louis laughed. 'That's ok, as I said before, I've always got your back.

After they were full they put the left over pizza away and settled down again on the couch. Louis unpaused the movie.

Elani's eyes began to fell droopy. She closed them for a second, and then fell alseep.
