The Truth Behind the Lies

A story my friend and I are writing! Charlie (Charlotte) Walker and Shane Carter may seem like typical 15 year olds, but there's much more going on between the lines. Charlie and Shane have been best friends since preschool, but when Charlie discovers a secret that Shane has been hiding, it leads to some surprising events.

4. Arranged Meeting

That was close. Way too close.
What am I going to do? I can't keep Charlie away forever, but I can't let her near Ian, my father. He'll beat me, drown me, burn me, or even kill me, yeah.
But what I'm really worried about is Charlie. If she comes home and meets Ian, he might try to hurt her, too, and that would hurt me more than any amount of pain.

I need to find a way to keep Charlie away from my house and to get rid of Ian permanently. But how?
While thinking about all of this I was walking. Since I wasn't paying attention, I kinda ran into a pole.
"Ow!" I exclaimed when I landed on the ground.
"Hey, Shane! What were you daydreaming about there?"
I looked up at Damen. He was a friend of mine and, sadly, one of the boys that didn't like Charlie. He has ash blonde hair and amber eyes, and an attitude that makes him hated by all of the teachers in our school.

"I was just a little too deep in thought I guess," I said as I got up.
"I noticed that, but what were you thinking about to cause you to crash into a pole?"
What was I supposed to say? I couldn't tell him what I was really thinking about.
He looked at me, waiting for a reply. I decided to tell the truth, but not all of it.
"I was thinking about Charlie."
"Why were you thinking about her?" he asked, genuinely confused.
"Look man, I know you don't like her, but can you try to spend at least five minutes with her? Just to get to know her?" This was a topic I had thought about a lot. It wasn't the main thing on my mind right now, but now was probably a better time than any other.
"Dude, you can't be serious. She's such a freak! I can't even believe you hang out with her. I mean, you have a hot girlfriend, so why even bother hanging around her?" Damen argued.
"You know she's been my friend forever, and she's not as bad as you think. Please, I'm begging you. Just one day of hanging out with her and then you never have to do it again if you don't want to."
He looked at me as he thought about it. "Fine. I'll hang out with her for one day, but that's it."
I smiled. "Thank you so much! I owe you big time! Take her out after school tomorrow. I'll tell her about the plans. Now, I've got to go, I'll talk to you later!" And with that I turned and walked away.
Even though I had some serious issues going on right now, I got some peace of mind knowing that my best friend and my close friend were going to be hanging out for the day. Maybe things were going to change. And this was just the beginning.
