In the remote village of Dedham a old myth about a man hanging himself on a tree in unusual circumstances is popular amongst the village. On Halloween 1902, Alice and her friend Alexis are late to the church, they see a shadow thinking it's just an adult running home to get something. But was it? Strange things happen and it seems as the myth is playing out in front of them. Will this kill them bboth? or not.....

7. protect

I took my first step towards the conjoining room, the dining room. The tiles felt colder than before, the light from the street looked more threatening than before. My life could be over in a few seconds. I gulped at the thought. I prayed to god to protect me and to protect my family if I did pass away, to stop the evil inside this house. I was out of the kitchen and into the dining room.

The dining room was the oldest part of the house. It was decorated with wallpaper in which had a flower print on it. It was starting to come away from the wall. The room smelt musty, I guessed it was because of the light and we bathed in here, so the water would steam the windows up. The floorboards were covered with a rug. It had a few stains on it, probabally from when we used to bathe in here. It was a light green, lavender and sky blue. Like the wallpaper it was starting to get a tad old, and frayed around the edges. The large wooden oak table was rather new, as I said before, we used to bathe in here as there was a fire. Now there's a little room upstairs where we bathe. The table was covered what was a snow white cloth, but now was a stained, dirty cloth. On it lay gold encrusted cups and saurcers, they weren't used often. The only time they were used is when a guest or in which a family member was joining us. I was guessing that maybe Alexis's mum was here. She was rather posh, and unlike us, was not one of the catholic faith. She said only the old and the lower class were catholics, and the upper class were protestant. I know for a fact, plenty of people that are of the catholic faith and yes, more whealthy than ourselves. She is just a complete snob. The dining room was quite large, most of the people on our street are not as fortunate as us, as 10 or 15 people live in one house, in which was not as big as this. We were fortunate because my grandfather had died a few years ago in the churchyard tree. He, I may point out was rather young and maybe of the age of 15 or 16, when this girl became pregnant with his son, who is my father. My grandmother is still alive and lives with us, though she has been away for a few days because she has gone to see a friend up North.

I was at the end of the dining room  and was looking for something to protect my self just incase that there was something there in the next room. I looked around the room looking for something to protect myself with. There was a golden plate, that won't be suitible enough, I thought to myself. I know that we have a sword, in which was my grand-fathers. Where did grandmother put that? I knew it was expensive.... But this was an emergency. She would know that, when I explain it to her. I looked to my right and there was it. The sword. It was hanging on the wall, held by two metal hooks. The case that it was hung in was real gold, decorated with  sterling silver dragons and pink flowers. It showed in my opinion, the meaning of life. The sterling silver dragons showed what would happen to you if you did something bad. The gold angels with the silver wings showed heaven and what will happen to you if you did good. On it it read "God save queen Victoria." The handle of the sword was made with black material, rather soft but firm enough to not be to relaxed and probabally drop it onto your toe and have it amputated.

I reached up, just about to grab it when I heard a noise from the next room. I grabbed it , being extremely carefull that I don't drop it onto my foot. I paused outside the living room, the noise that came from indide sounded as if someone was jumping around and smashing all the ornaments that lay on the mantlepiece. A sense of panic and bewillderment flowed through me. I didn't want to go in as whoever it is could hurt me. But if I didn't the ornaments that lay on top of the mantlepice could become damage or break. Some of them where passed down from generation to generation and would not be found in this day as some of them where bought or made in the middle ages.

I took a deep breath, telling myself not to worry. My face and hands felt very sweaty, my legs was as floppy and unreliable as jelly. I accidently dropped the sword onto the floor, letting it bounce making loud noises. The noises that previously came from inside the room stopped. I was angry with myself that I could do such a stupid thing as that. For all I know the group of people inside the room could have escaped through the front window and down by the tunnel which lay under the primroses.

I quickly grabbed the sword, took one last breath and with my shaking hand opened the large oak door that led into the sitting room. My eyes were still tightly shut and when I opened them I couldn't believe what I saw...
