In the remote village of Dedham a old myth about a man hanging himself on a tree in unusual circumstances is popular amongst the village. On Halloween 1902, Alice and her friend Alexis are late to the church, they see a shadow thinking it's just an adult running home to get something. But was it? Strange things happen and it seems as the myth is playing out in front of them. Will this kill them bboth? or not.....

30. Dad

Something must have awoken my whole family during the time that I stood motionless. Before I knew it both of my parents were looking worriedly at the spot my eyes had drifted to, white and tired.

"That's it, your going back to school, you can't stay here, not after this. As a matter of fact, we might have to go,this is dangerous. First Alexis, now you. At least she's somewhere safe where people can watch over her." My dads voice, deep, rusty and commanding.

A eerie sense came over us, dreadful and overpowering; a force was here, in our home- in Alexis's. We knew that someone was watching and we needed to proceed in a quick and severe manner if we wanted to keep are selves protected.

Shifting quietly back through my bedroom, I locked the door. There was something I needed to do before I left to go to my boarding house. Soft murmuring came from outside of the door, before heavy footsteps overpowered the words that my parents carefully spoke.

My eyes closed tight, the image that was laid out before me minutes before propelled to severe extremes; in my head, I imagined my parents footsteps coming behind me. Carefully trying to be silent over my loud pleas for help, there faces twisted with pain. When I stopped shouting, I imagined myself turning and seeing there angered, white, decapitating bodies; imitating the small boy that lay dead before me.

I became awoken from my visual nightmare by a heavy and agitated knock and voice channeling from my mother. Telling me to hurry up and that I needed to get to school, before tea tonight so I could unpack for the rest of the term. She also mentioned that she had rang the headmistress about my arrival. In reply, I told her that I would not take long; that I needed to prepare something for safety. Within seconds of her leaving,I grabbed some lavender from a small red box which sat in the right hand corner of my cream desk.

I mumbled a prayer of thanks and protection for me and my parents, tearing small bits of lavender as I did so. The small purple flowers drifted to the edges of my room, some falling through the cracks of the floor boards. Relief filled me as I finished, the warm glow from the setting sun warmed the base of my neck. I knew I wouldn't get to school till eight that evening.
