6. Flashback

Previously… (Justin's POV)

"Okay look, the project will start on Monday next week. I will consider it over the weekend. If you two continue to rip each other's throats out…" Mr Anderson explained.

"We can change partners?" I suggested hopefully.

"No, but I'll consider negotiating with everyone else."

I rolled my eyes and pulled a face.

"Now go home and pack your things for the assignment." Mr Anderson stated, pointing at the door.

I stomped towards the door, not bothering to leave it open for Selena as I slammed it shut behind me angrily. I could hear her shouting loudly at me and I could picture Mr Anderson's eyes burning into the back of my head. But I just shook my head and walked towards my car, revved the engine and going back to my house to pack my clothes.

Selena's POV

I sighed as I stared at Justin's retreating figure. Somehow, his urge to leave the room bothered me.

What? What's wrong with you? You hate him remember? Get a grip Selena!

I chuckled humourlessly at my inner monologue, waved a goodbye to Mr Anderson, then walked out of the classroom.

By the time I got back to my house, it was pretty late. It didn’t feel strange that my mum wasn’t home, since she was always working late at work, and doesn’t get back until after midnight.  I trudged upstairs, kicked my door open, fell onto my bed and screamed into my pillow. It's so annoying how I have to do a stupid school project with my worst enemy, why does the world hate me so much? Mr Anderson just had to pair me up with HIM.

Now before you start asking me why I detest him so much, let me explain. You see, ever since I was a little girl, he has been ruining my life. Because my parents divorced when I was six years old, Justin's parents have always been there for me when I needed them.

"What do you think you're doing? She's only five years old! You shouldn't take her out on bike rides!" My dad Ricardo shouted. I heard loud voices in the kitchen arguing and slowly climbed out of bed. I hid in the corner upstairs and peaked my head out and saw Mummy  standing with her hands on her hips, glaring at my Daddy angrily.

"Look! It wasn't like she was going by herself! I was with her, isn’t that enough?" Mummy hissed back, jutting her finger at Dad's chest.

I saw his eyes flash heatedly as I whimpered and cowered back against the wall. I have never seen him so irritated and it scared me. I saw my mum flinch when dad grabbed her wrist and pushed it violently away from him. My eyes widened when I saw him step up to mum, so they were nose to nose and spoke in a low menacing voice.

"Don't talk back to me, do you hear me?" His fists were balled up by his sides, like he was about to hit something, or someone.

I saw Mummy step back slightly before nodding.

I walked out of my preschool school gates, head still reeling about my parent's argument. They haven't been very nice to each other these days and I don’t know what's going on, but I hope they fix it up soon. I didn’t realise that I had tears rolling down my cheeks until I saw Justin's mum stand in front of me. Her eyes were concerned and with one look at her, I started crying harder, falling into Pattie. She hugged me tightly, stroking my hair and rubbing my back.

I sniffed and rubbed my eyes and they caught Justin's honey coloured ones. He raised his eyebrows and smirked at me, causing me to blush and look down at my toes.

Pattie's sympathetic eyes met mine again and she gave me a soft smile. "Would you like to come over to our house for a drink and snack?" She asked with her hand outstretched towards me. I glanced across at Justin who had his hands in his pockets and was toeing the ground with his sneakers, looking away from me.

"But what about my Mummy?" I whispered, not having the energy to speak any louder.

"Don't worry, I'll call her when we get back home. Come on," Pattie nodded her head at her hand, signalling me to take it. I took it with hesitation but followed her nevertheless.

We pulled up at a huge house that stood on the hills, with an amazing view of everything below it. Pattie parked the car and stepped outside to retrieve our bags from the car boot. Just as I stepped out of the car, Justin shoved me slightly, causing me to nearly trip. I whirled around to ask him what that was for, but he just shrugged and glared at me saying, "Watch where you're going," before skipping into his house.

I suddenly felt slightly nauseous, because obviously Justin didn't want me in his house. Since that day on, he kept on pushing me around and as we grew older, he became popular and him and his "gang" of friends started calling me names and purposely elbowing me on their way passed, making me drop my books.

I have never felt so humiliated in my life, and as I slowly looked up, I could see a flash of sympathy? on Justin's face, but that quickly disappeared and was replaced by a smirk.

I blinked slowly as I came back to reality and took a big gulp of air, as if I had been underwater for too long. My eyes darted towards my alarm clock on my bedside table and gasped at the time. I had been staring in open space for nearly one hour and I still haven't packed my things for Italy yet!

I quickly stood up and dumped everything that I thought would be necessary for this trip, and also placed some mascara and other make up supplies just in case. Finally, exhaustion took over, my eyelids fluttered closed and I slipped into a light sleep, plagued by dreams of my childhood and a strange honey colour that my subconscious must have brought up.
