10. Coincidence

I opened my mouth to say something but quickly shut it when I heard the screech of tires.  I whipped my head around just in time to see a beat-up red pickup truck come around the corner of the block.  Only thing was, there was a horde of the infected right behind it.  I groaned and bent over to pick up the rifle that I had dropped.

"Wait..what's the person doing?" June asked.  I looked up only to see that the truck was headed straight for another car.  And it didn't look like it was going to slow down any time soon.  The truck crashed into the car causing itself to flip and land on its back.  Unfortunately, the person wasn't wearing their seatbelt which resulted in them crashing through the front windshield along with various other items.  They didn't survive and I knew this due to the fact that their head was ripped off.  No joke.  Their head was literally ripped off.  And it was probably still in the truck.  I quickly reloaded the gun and get ready to start running.  Ironically, just as the pack of zombies was running past the car to get to us, the truck exploded.  I didn't hear any sounds except for fire and the creaking of metal.  Some of the smoke cleared and the 'various other items' turned out to be weapons. "Wow."

I burst out laughing as soon as she said that, but was quickly silenced when I felt a sharp pain in my side from being thrown around.  Suddenly, I noticed that while some of the zombies were dead, others were trying to stand back up.  Shit.  Adrenalin kicked in and I struggled to pick up the weapons.  Unfortunately, trying to carry five guns at once can get difficult.  Especially if they weigh over thirty-five pounds and you have multiple injuries like numerous bruises and a considerable amount of blood loss.  Not to mention that you have to run like hell.  I grunted and handed three of the weapons to June while I kept four.

"Hey!  You shouldn't have to carry more than me when you're hurt." June sympathized.  A drop of blood fell on the ground when I bent over to pick up my share of the weapons.  I reached up to my head and realized that I was bleeding.  Again.  I let out an exasperated sigh, but was grateful for having a best friend like her.  She took one of the rifles from me and we both sprinted.

Or at least..I tried to.  My leg seemed to lag behind and my breath became haggard and uneven.  June ran past me, holding the weapons as if they weighed nothing and ran onto the other street.  I finally made it to the end of the block, frantically looking for her.  I was about to shout out for her, but my eyes quickly trained in on an open manhole.  A loud groan came behind me and I let out a startled scream before darting for the manhole.

"Alex! Over here!" June's head popped out of the ground and she motioned for me to hurry up. Without thinking, I threw the weapons into the darkness and ignored the shout of pain that followed.  I quickly positioned my feet on the metal rails and climbed down a bit before I reached over and dragged the manhole cover over.  The muscles in my arms screamed out in protest, but I managed to close the opening just as the infected were reaching down to grab me.  As soon as the darkness enveloped me, gravity took over and my foot slipped on the wet, metal rungs.  My other foot quickly followed, and I let out a yelp as I fell, feet first, down into darkness.
