These Tiny Things

I am no good at writing blurbs, so sorry if you wanted one. :)

I showed the first chapter to my friend and she thought I was talking bad about adoption, so if you get offended by it, I'm sorry!! I am not against adoption in any way, shape, or form!!

1. One

"You're adopted, right?"

I snapped my head up from where I was reading a book, sitting on the bus stop bench. Mom and Dad had originally been against me riding on a city bus, (you never know what type of people are downtown) but I managed to cajole them into letting me ride. It would coincide with their daily activities, and besides, I like having some time alone.

"W-what?" I stammered, glancing around, trying to see who had spoken.

The person--I had by then discovered it was male--exhaled loudly and impatiently. "I said, 'you're adopted, right?' And you still haven't answered that, by the way. Also, I'm standing behind you."

I turned around. "No," I said, "I'm not adopted."

"Are you sure? It's fine if you are," he replied, and flashed me a smile. "I'm adopted."

"I'm not."  I exclaimed. "Wouldn't I know if I were adopted?"

"Well, it's possible your parents never told you..."

"My parents don't lie to me," I snapped.

"Okay, fine," he said, and grinned again. "I'm Ace."

"Sophia," I said warily. "Are you taking the bus?"

"Nope." He said. "Just wanted to ask you that question." He smiled secretively.

I started to think my mother was right about the sort of people you met in the city.

Just then, the bus pulled up. "I've got to go," I said, adding as an afterthought, "sorry."

"It's fine," Ace grinned. "I expect I'll be seeing a lot of you, S-oph-ia." He said it like that, the three syllables all stretched out.

"I expect I'll be seeing a whole lot."
