A Not-So Cinderella Story

When I felt like I was being swept off my feet in a Cinderella story, someone had to be there to drop me, right?
Let's backtrack a little.
Cher Topman. A simple name for a complex girl like me. I'm an orphan at a little orphanage in London, but don't be fooled. Just because it's in London doesn't mean that it's extravagant.
When a rich American single woman makes the fatal decision to adopt me and take me back to America, my life is turned upside down by some people I never thought I'd meet.

8. Helping a lost cause.

"Haylee, I need your help," Justin tells me through the phone.

"I'm a bit busy right now. Making bagels for my darling," I smile with the phone tucked under my chin.

"I'm kind of freaking out right now," he says nervously.

"Don't you think you should be talking to Cher about this?" I ask him.

"You don't get it, it's about Cher," he says. I drop the whisk into the bowl.

"What did you do to her? Justin, I swear if you did anything I wouldn't approve of, I will rip your head off," I say seriously.

"No, it's nothing like that. Don't worry. I need advice," he says.

"What do you mean?" I ask.

"I..I really like her. Listen, can I explain this later? What about lunch? Meet me at Sam's?" he asks.

"You get one hour Bieber. Be there at 12," I say and hang up, continuing the make the bagels. What did he mean about advice?

Honestly, I have a like/hate thing with him. Not in a relationship way, but in a little brother way. I am 28 anyways. He just bothers me by the way he treats people, but I love his music and he's passionate. You just have to dig deep into the ego and maybe you can pull out a soul. Maybe.

I don't want him to ruin my mood. I have the most wonderful daughter in the world and life is great.

Right on cue, Cher walks in yawning.

"Good morning," she smiles.

"Good morning darlin! It's bagels today," I smile back.

"Let me help," she says and washes her hands. I hand her the bowl and she pulls out some dough and starts forming them into circles with me.

"So, how did Justin treat you yesterday? Did his ego get the better of him?" I ask.

"Actually, it didn't. I really felt like he was trying. There were a couple times he slipped in some smart remarks, but for the most part, he felt real. But he was so confident. He even tried to kiss me, but," she starts but I cut her off.

"HE TRIED TO KISS YOU?!?!?!" I scream and she laughs. She left this part out last night.

"We were having this food fight. We were throwing anything we could find at each other. I slipped on an egg yolk and grabbed his arm, so he fell with me and landed next to me. We laughed for a bit, but when it died down, he leaned in for a kiss, but I put my finger in between our lips. I told him that a girl worth kissing couldn't be easily kissed, and that's it," she tells me. I take the pan of bagels and stick them in the oven. We sit down at the table.

"That is so cool. If it were me, I would've been so scared, I wouldn't know what to do and I would've totally kissed him even if I didn't want to," I laugh.

"I almost didn't. But that whole date I was wound up. I've never been kissed or even on a date," she says.

"No way. You're gorgeous. Those Doncaster guys need some glasses," I say.

"I guess they don't do orphans," she shrugs.

"Well I do. By the way, I have a last minute photo shoot at 12. It'll be about an hour. Do you think you'll be good?" I ask her.

"Yeah, I think I might run over to Central Park. Bring the sketchpad. See if I can draw," she laughs.

"We'll see. By the way, do you want me to schedule you a modeling gig? Seventeen magazine would adore you," I suggest.

"Yeah, that sounds fun! Do you really think I could be a model though? I don't think I'm pretty enough," she says.

"Darling, what did Christopher drill into you during princess training?" I ask.

"I am a princess on the inside and the outside," she rolls her eyes.

"Right. You better believe it," I smile and take the bagels out of the oven.

"Those smell delicious," she says grabbing a hot one. I set the pan down and grab one, both of us eat and talk at the table.

"Alright. I have to go get ready," I say.

"Me too," she says and we both exit to our closets. I decide on a leather mini skirt, a gold sparkly top, and a black blazer. Always dress to impress. I put my hair in a messy ponytail and do my makeup in smoky tones. Some strappy heels and a gold clutch and I'm good.

"See you in an hour Cher!" I yell out.

"See you!" she yells back from her closet. I go down to the lobby and out into the New York air. Good thing Sam's is across the street. These heels kill. The price I pay for style.

As I walk in the door, I hear a grateful sigh.

"Haylee," Justin says motioning me over. I sit down across from him.

"So, what's this about?" I ask him with a raised eyebrow.

"I need to know how to treat Cher. I really like her and I know I'm not the best at keeping a girlfriend," he admits. It's true though. He just got done with Selena. That lasted a solid week and a half.

"How am I supposed to know you won't break my baby girl's heart?" I say.

"I've never felt like this before. Cher's the only girl I've ever met who hasn't treated my like Justin Bieber, Hollywood star. I feel like the real me when I'm with her. I just want to be with her all the time. She took my breath away from the first time I saw her and she respects herself. She wouldn't let me kiss her. She's the only girl who has ever refused a kiss from me and I actually liked it. It's supposed to be something special and I've been treating it like nothing and she taught me that. Please Haylee. Tell me how I can keep her," he pleads.

"Alright, I'll tell you," I say finally.

"What's up with you? Aren't we friends?" he asks.

"We were, but now that you are dating my daughter, I'm in protective mode. I don't want her to get hurt like Selena," I remind him and he shrugs.

"Justin, it's really simple. To keep a relationship going, you only need to do a couple things. You have to make an effort. You have to call her, you have to pay for dates, you have to plan for dates, you have to make all of the moves, the guys have the harder part in the relationship. But that doesn't matter if they're in love. You can't give up on her. When she's going through a hard time, you have to hold her and make her forget about it. When she's angry, you have to calm her down. When she's happy, you have to cherish it. You have to know when she's not ok. Just because she's smiling, doesn't mean she's alright. You have to do things with her that she'll never forget. I know for a fact she'd rather go stargazing than go to a party. And you have to be a gentleman and treat her like a lady. Hold doors open for her, help her in the car before you sit down, things like that make a girl swoon. And just love her. That's all you have to do," I tell him. He sits there silent for a moment.

"I'm really disgusting. I treat people so badly, even when I'm privileged to even know the people I know. I promise I won't hurt Cher. Can you tell her I want to see her again?" he asks. I raise an eyebrow.

"Just kidding. I'll do it. Is she at your penthouse?" he laughs.

"Actually she isn't. She told me she'd be in Central Park, if you wanted to go hunt her down," I tell him.

"I think I might. Thanks again Haylee, you don't even know how much this means to me," he says sincerely.

"No problem. Just don't break her heart," I smile as he gets up from the table and runs out toward Central Park.

*If any of you were confused this chapter was in HAYLEE'S POV. Not Cher's. Don't worry, next chapter will be Cher's.
