11. To Save A Princess

Fletch could see something falling, but this was no lump of stone. As the fiery debris fell around him, he half-ran, half-flew towards the descending shape.

It was a person. Fletch just knew it. He continued to run, not concentrating on anything else around him. As he got closer, he saw the black hair and the expensive outfit billowing out in the wind. It was the Princess.

She was only a few meters from the ground when Fletch dived forwards. He took the whole of her weight, and the air was knocked out of him. She seemed to be unconcious.

Fletch lay there for a few moments, trying to regain his breath. Then he wriggled out from underneath the Princess's body, and turned it over. She was very beautiful, and she looked so vunerable, with flickering light of the flames reflecting in her glossy hair.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked skywards. The dragon was still circling the castle, but was no longer sending out jets of flame. Then it started to plummet towards the bailey, and in a last minute attempt to protect the noble, Fletch pulled himself over her body and stayed locked there.

The dragon swooped so low over them that He could have touched its huge emerald scales. He turned his head slightly, and watched as the beast pulled up just as it reached the wall surrounding the castle. The mighty wall collapsed, and there was stone everywhere. Fletch jumped up and dragged the princess into a crevice in the wall, away from the damage. Then he blacked out.

Fletch woke before the princess, but only just. Her eyes snapped open in panic a few moments later.

"What...where...who...?" she looked up at Fletch. He had never seen eyes so brightly blue, and for a second, he was dazed by their clearness.

The princess pulled away from him and pressed herself up against the rugged stone.

"Who are you? What-"

"My name is Fletch - I - you - I saved your life." Fletch jumped. "Your Grace," he added hastily.

The princess looked confused.

"You were falling," Fletch explained. "I caught you before you could hit the ground,"

Her beautiful eyes widened. "If your story is true, then I am eternally in your debt - Fletch."

"Your Grace, it was nothing-"

"Saving a life is most certainly something," she interrupted. "And you do not need to address me formally. I despise that,"

"Oh," said Fletch. "Sorry,"

She held out a pale hand. "My name is Ocello."

He shook it. "I am Fletch,"

She - Ocello - laughed shakily. "So you said."

Fletch was more than a bit embarrased. He looked outside.

"It is morning." he said, shading his eyes.

"Is the dragon gone?" Ocello asked fearfully.

"Oh yes. It must have flwn away a while ago." replied Fletch, like he hadn't been scared at all.

"Thank goodness." Ocello said, and her whole body seemed to relax. "That was the most terriyfing experience of my -"

Fletch and Ocello both turned. A large guard was pointing a spear into the crevice, directly at Fletch's throat.

The guard then saw Ocello, and yelled, "Faore! I've found her! She's here!"

Another guard lumbered forward, and peered with black piggy eyes into the crevice. Ocello looked rather scared.

"Come with me, your highness."

"What?" the guard said, as if he hadn't heard her.

"I will not leave until you tell me what you are going to do to Fletch."

"Why would you care about a worthless boy like him? He's going straight to a noose. There's punishment for those who don't go down to the shelters." snarled the first guard, glaring at Fletch.

"Why should I care?" said Ocello shakily. "I care because he saved my life. You will let him go for that reason."

"Your highness, you're talking nonsense, if you don't mind me saying," said the second guard. "Come on," he grabbed her by the wrist and tried to pull her out of the crevice, but Ocello bit down hard on his arm. Fletch almost laughed as the guard sprang away in pain.

"Owwwww!" he howled, dropping his spear so he could hold his throbbing arm. Looking closer, Fletch saw that Ocello had drawn blood.

"That'll teach you to touch me." said Ocello. "You will let him go."

"Sorry, your highness, but we don't got to listen you," said the first guard, and he grabbed Fletch by the scruff of his neck. Fletch yelped in surprise.

From underneath her dress, Ocello pushed out a foot, still in it's heeled boot, and kicked out at the guard.

He dropped Fletch, who hesitated, looking at Ocello.

"Go!" she mouthed. "Quickly!"

Fletch nodded, bowed slightly, and ran.
