42. The Search (Part One)

"Is there any sign of her?"

"We have looked everywhere. She is not there."

"You cannot have looked every-"

"We had a group of thirty of the Baron's guards looking over the castle, Agatha. They checked every room and every patch of the bailey. All of the houses have been searched. She is gone."

Agatha sank to the floor, her scruffy skirts splaying over the rough wooden floorboards. She felt tears in her eyes and furiously wiped them away with the hem of her apron.

It was a couple of days after the banquet, and word had already got around that the post-princess was missing. Of course, King Oskar and the Baron had shown little to no interest whatsoever - all the King saw was the loss of a servant rather than a lost sister.

All the nobles attending the banquet had long since returned to their homes, taking the track that lead through the dead fields rather than going through the forest; there was no-one to ask if they had seen Ocello. The Baron and his family had hidden themselves away in the castle after the fire, and left their servants to take care of the debris left behind.

It had been up to Agatha to try to find Ocello. Technically, she could not give orders to the manor house guards , but with the King sleeping and staying in his bed chamber for most of the time now, she could get away with it. The guards were all just as worried as Agatha was about Ocello, though they were trying to remain calm.

"Well, we must check the village. Spread out, search everywhere you can! We must find her," Agatha choked out.

"We understand, but we cannot go to that extent without consent from his majesty." said one of the guards grimly.

Agatha's head jerked up to look at him.

"Do you not care about the wellbeing of the only sane heir to Heriven's throne?"

"Of course I do - but it would not be wise to go against the King's wishes. He could execute any one of  us for what we have already done to find her! You are not the one in power, Agatha, and he has not given us permission to find his runaway sister!"

A cold silence fell across the underground room. The guard who had spoken knew he had gone too far, however, Agatha did not snap back at him as he had been expecting. Instead, her voice wavered and she asked,

"Where has she gone, Osloth? Has she run away from us?"

The guard, Osloth, turned away at hearing his true name, a name that brought back too many memories and thoughts for him to contain. "I do not know, Mistress Agatha. Maybe she will return to us."

He looked back at her. Agatha was holding her head in her hands. Osloth knew how much Ocello meant to Agatha. She was like family.

"Tomorrow, we search the village. Every street, every house, every hole deep enough for that girl to hide in."

He left the room, leaving Agatha to weep in peace.
