28. The Missing Will

"We have had no luck," said the main guard, Viketh.

"None? None at all? Are you sure you have searched everywhere it might-"

"We are sure, Mistress Agatha."

"Did you ask the Prince?"

"His bedchamber door is locked, and he has the only key in there with him."

Agatha slumped in her armchair despairingly, her left forefinger rubbing her temple. The guards had had no luck in finding the Will of King Osslor. She knew Viketh well enough - from what she could tell and already knew, he usually got tasks completed quickly. However, there seemed to be no trace of the Will anywhere.

"What about his bedchamber?" said Agatha.

"The door is sealed."

"Locked? Then find the key!"

"It is not that simple. We believe that the door may be sealed with something other than a lock."

"Would this be the King's work?"

"We do not know. However, we cannot get into the room."

The head lady in waiting did not know what to do. The Kingdom did not have a ruler, which would mean things going out of control very quickly - there was no-one to take orders from or to make laws.

Agatha's room was dark except for the few candles on the shelves. It was late at night, but most of the manor was awake. Viketh and the other guards stood motionless in front of Agatha.

"What are we going to do?" She whispered.

"I do not know, but we will find a solution."

"We need a ruler NOW. The only people who are eligible for the throne are Prince Oskar, The Lord of The Castle and Princess Ocello."

"The first two, certainly," said Viketh. "But the Princess...she is too young, and she is female-"

"Why should that matter?" asked Agatha angrily. "She has a good soul, and would surely run the kingdom - dare I say - in a much better way than the Prince or The Lord!"

"Agatha, you are confused, you do not realise what you are saying," said Viketh. "The Ancient Law of the kingdom state that the ruler must be male at any cost. The  Law also states that if there is no will - a rare circumstance - the next of kin should be crowned, until some evidence of the last a ruler's before-death thoughts are found. Therefore..."

"The Prince is King," gasped Agatha.

A wave of cold air swept into the room through the singular tiny window, and everybody shivered.

"I'm afraid that is the only way. It is the Ancient Law of Heriven, and so must be obeyed." said Viketh grimly.

Agatha covered her face with her hands. "Goodness only knows what he will do this Kingdom."

Viketh took a deep breath. "Then it is decided," he started. "Until some recollection of the King's thoughts are found..." - he swallowed, for his throat had suddenly turned very dry - "Prince Oskar is the rightful King of Heriven."
