37. The Ancient Law (Part One)

The room was massive. It smelt of old pages and learning - parchment books were piled up in stacks, bound in cloth of every colour. The walls and floor were carpeted with a fine film of dust which added a strange musk to the atmosphere.

There were flares burning in stone brackets around the tops of the walls. Ocello was too stunned to question why they were already lit.

At the back of the room, there was a dark wooden chest. It was large enough to fit a person inside.

Violet stepped into the room and sighed happily.

"It is not particularly beautiful, I know...but I love it here."

"I think it is wonderful," said Ocello.

Violet beckoned her forward and moved towards the chest.

"I think this is where the Law is kept."

Ocello went quiet. Today, she could discover who was right for the throne...and maybe, just maybe...it would be he-

Her thoughts were interrupted by Violet rattling the top of the chest.

"Locked?" asked Ocello, sadly.

"I am afraid so." replied Violet. "My key is too small to fit this lock."

"Where would the key be kept, do you think?"

"I do not know. I have never needed to open this chest." said Violet.

"Then...if we are unable to find the key...we force it."

Violet breathed sharply inwards.

"That is not wise. Someone will find out."

"I thought you said people had forgotten about this room?"

Violet looked at the chest doubtfully.

"Violet, what lies in this chest could save our lives. Not just us - everyone! Do you not realise that this could heal the Kingdom?"

When Violet did not react, Ocello looked around the room wildly. She had to find something to break the lock on the chest.

she ran to a stack of huge books - most of them were falling apart - and she wrenched the the thick silver hooks from the spines.

"Stop!" cried Violet. "Have you no respect?!"

"I have GOT to open that chest! You do not understand!"

Pushing roughly past Violet, Ocello pulled the band straight and shoved it into the lock of the chest, rattling it. There were tears in her eyes and the cold stone floor hurt her knees. Violet sank down next to her and put an arm around her shoulders as she started to sob.

Violet looked at the lid of the chest. She looked back at Ocello. She looked at the lid and a grin spread across her face.

"Ocello..."
