18. Strange Weather

It was going to happen again. Kytra could sense it.

She remembered she had heard a group of villagers chatting outside her tent a while ago. They had been talking about the dragon attack.

She closed her eyes and the scene became alive in her head.

"Dragon attacks always come in  packs," said the first villager, who was nothing more than a dark shape, though his fear was clearly audible.

"Nonsense," snapped the second villager. "I'm sure the Baron and his men easily scared the beast off,"

"I - I heard - that the beast went right through the castle wall!" squeaked the first.

"Did you?" asked the second villager, dryly, and it's dark shape started to move away.

"Just wait," said the  first. "There will be another!"

Kytra snapped back to the current time. The first villager had been sort of right; fourten years ago, at the time of the last dragon attack, there had been a few before it. Maybe it was routine for the dragons to keep returning - to make sure the job was done. Or was it something deeper?

Kytra was too tired to think about it any longer. The hot midday sun made her sleepy, and she rested herself on the padded floor of the tent. The weather in this kingdom is so strange, she thought. It was not the frst time - an nor would it be the last.

As fatigue finally overtook her, Kytra rolled over into a more comfortable position.

Just missing the ruby next to her, in which a dragon silently roared.
