1. Prologue

(Fourteen Years Ago)

Queen Ophelia lay in her bed, surrounded by her ladies in waiting. Her skin was ghostly pale and her eyes shut tight. She had just given birth to a baby girl.

"Give her to me. Let me hold her." she murmured. Her lips barely moved as she spoke.

One of the ladies in waiting, a wide-set woman called Agatha, handed the bundle of blankets to the Queen, her hands shaking.

Queen Ophelia held her baby close, an expression of longing on her face. The baby girl opened her blue eyes wide, gazing intently at her mother.

"What will her name be, your Grace?" asked a maidservant, timidly.

"...Ocello. Her name will be Ocello. Nothing more, nothing less. Ocello."

The Queen opened her eyes and looked out of the leaded window. The full moon shone brightly down, slashing through her bedchamber.

"Such a beautiful night." she sighed. "I am glad I have such a lovely view to remember when I go."

"Your grace, you cannot mean..." started a maidservant, in horror, but it was too late.

The Queen looked out at the night for one last second, then lay back on her swansdown pillow, and closed her eyes, as if to sleep.

Her maidservants tried to rouse her, but in their hearts they knew that she would not wake. Their beloved Queen was dead.

The baby, Princess Ocello, began to cry.
