52. Blood & Shadow

Kytra grabbed her head and screamed, collapsing to the ground. Both Pike and Fletch heard  the sound from a long way off. The power of hunger had sent them out of the safety of the clearing looking for something - anything - to eat. They were at the edge of the lake in hope of catching fish, but they dropped everything and ran towards the noise. Ocello had done the same, cutting herself free of the clearing with the dagger, hacking through the trees towards the sound.

When and how Kytra had disappeared, none of them could guess.

"KYTRA!" Fletch yelled. Kytra heard his voice through the pain of the vision and she screamed again. She was being overtaken by so many images all at once - some blurry, some clear, but they were all moving so quickly that she couldn't make out one at a time. There was so much blood...

Miraculously, Fletch and Pike crashed through the trees to the exact spot where Kytra had fallen. She lay surrounded by her hair and the folds of her dress, breathing heavily and making odd groaning noises through wracked sobbing.

"Kytra..." Pike grasped her by the shoulders and pulled her to a sitting position gently but firmly. She pushed him away,

"D-d-don't, I c-can't - s-s-omebody..."

She rocked back and forth among the leaves and dirt, Fletch and Pike trying to calm her, but they might as well have not even been there. Kytra was lost in the vision.

There was smoke everywhere. A figure lay lifeless on the ground, whilst another rode on horseback away from the scene, weilding a sword dripping black blood-

"What's wrong with her?!"

"I don't know! What should we do?"

"Where's Ocello?"

"I'm here!"

Kytra spoke, or rather hissed, at the bewildered girl. Ocello stepped towards her.

"Ocello, take the stone out of Kytra's pocket..."

"She's talking about herself..." said Fletch in disbelief.

"Take the stone from her!" Kytra hissed. "Now! You are so close..." and with a final hiss, Kytra collapsed to the ground.

Ocello reached towards Kytra's dress into the pocket at her hip, and pulled out the moonstone. It was glowing. Ocello was stunned. Pike and Fletch were both utterly speechless.

Kytra suddenly jolted upright from the ground, and sat up straight. "The Baron's wife is dead," she said, her head pounding, and her eyes glazed.

So she is!

The dragon crashed through the canopy behind them, smoke spurting from his nostrils. The thorny branches left cuts in his wings and he grumbled in annoyance, struggling to free himself from the clutch of the forest.

Ocello screamed, but held onto the stone. Pike pulled her back, forecfully.

Kytra felt her pocket, and then looked up at the dragon. "You controlled me," she said out loud, but of course he still heard her.

It was the only way. There is one coming. You must be ready.
