34. A Promise

"Perfection!" cried Pike, excitedly.

"Ssh," Ocello hushed him hurriedly, and gestured to a pair of armour-clad guards a short while away. Pike winced and ducked behind an abandoned house, pulling Ocello with him. She pulled the hood down and let the soft breeze rustle her hair.

"I agree that it could not be a better opportunity," she said, "But we must keep quiet."

"I understand." replied Pike.

"You do realise, this may not be very rewarding."

"What other choice do we have, Ocello? The kingdom is dying. The Ancient Law could be our only hope."

"I know," sighed Ocello.

She sank to the dusty floor and wrapped her cloak tighter around herself. Pike sat next to her. It had only been a couple of days but he seemed even thinner.

"Have you...eaten?"

He looked puzzled for a moment.

"No," he said sadly.

Ocello was horrified. At least she got stale bread and slightly rotted vegetables - the King couldn't have his servants dying every two minutes. She came to the conclusion that Pike was almost definitely dying. He had purple circles under his eyes and Ocello could almost see what he would look like as a skull. His arm brushed against her accidentally and she could feel the bone through his scrappy sleeve.

she shivered.

"Are you alright?"

"Perfectly fine," she replied, trying her hardest to smile. "I promise I will find the Ancient Law, Pike."

He smiled at her - it should have made her feel better...instead it made her heart break a little more.
