25. Distractions

Niall POV

We walked back into the hospital, where I was overwhelmed by the scent of antiseptic cleaner.  We went up to the front desk and were told to go to the 3rd floor where the testing was done.  I signed in and then we sat down in the uncomfortable blue plastic chairs.

We waited about 20 minutes before someone said my name.  It wasn’t the same brunette from last time, this time it was a short nurse whose name tag read ‘Suzanne’, and had her blonde hair cut short.  “Are you Niall?” she asked as I walked up to her.  “ Yes” I replied, as I followed her down a hallway and into a light blue room.

“First I’m just going to take your blood pressure, to make sure your body has recovered from the allergic reaction, then we will do the allergy testing.”  I sat down in a much more comfortable gray chair as she put a black cuff around my bicep.

Suzanne squeezed the pump and the cuff filled with air and tightened around my arm. She released the cuff, and scribbled something down on her clipboard.  “Okay, so we're going to just do simple allergy testing, and we are going to inject your skin with different allergens and see what reacts,it won't be very painful, just some needle pricks".

The blood drained out of my face.  " That is unless..." the nurse looked back at the clipboard.  "it seems Kristen wrote you down for getting your blood drawn, instead of normal allergy testing. Is this correct?"

"Who's Kristen" Sydney asked.  "Tall brunette, she was your nurse a couple of days ago.  I'm guessing she didn't put you down for regular testing because you don't like needles?"  I nodded. "Yeah that's pretty much the only reason why we use this kind, it only involves one needle, compared to many."  I relaxed slightly to the sound of that.  "I'll be right back, and then we can begin." The nurse walked out of the room, and down the hallway.

"Niall relax you're going to be fine," Sydney soothed as she grabbed my hand," it's just one needle."  A different nurse came back into the room carrying a tray with a needle and multiple syringes.  She put down an arm rest and tied a rubber band around my right arm and started looking for a vein.

She then began to prepare the equipment while talking to me , "have you ever had your blood drawn before?" She asked fiddling with one of the syringes.  "No," I said starting to grow nervous " well the process... It’s quite simple and it only takes a few minutes.  I will insert the needle, and then will fill a couple of these vials up with blood, which will then be tested." I nodded, as I squeezed Sydney's hand.

"you ready?" She asked " just try to relax your arm, I'm going to put it in on three.  One, two,". Right then Sydney smashed her lips onto my  cheek causing me to forget about the needle.  She pulled back, and i found that the needle was in my arm.  I expected blood to flow through the tube, but it didn't.  "It seems I didn't find a big enough vein, let me go find Suzanne, one moment," she said walking out of the room, leaving me with a needle stuck in my arm.

Sydney rubbed circles on my back, as we waited for Suzanne to come back.  She rushed back into the room, with what i guessed was an intern walking behind her.  “I’m so sorry,” she said apologizing, “I’m just going to remove the needle, and we will try again.  Take a deep breath,” she instructed me as she removed the needle.

There was a slight twinge of pain in my arm, but it wasn’t too bad.  Suzanne untied the band from my arm, and tied it to my left arm.  She grabbed the needle, and right before she put it in Sydney leaned over to kiss me on the cheek, but this time I was expecting it.  I turned my head, my lips connecting with her, but just for a moment before we pulled away.

I looked down and saw the needle impaled in my arm, and blood flowing through the tube.  My face went pale, and I looked at the wall, trying to ignore the uncomfortable object in my arm.  Sydney was holding my hand, and rubbing circles on my back.  After a couple of minutes Suzanne had taken enough blood for testing, and she sent the intern who had been awkwardly standing in the corner, to send the blood to labs.

"Take a deep breath," she said removing the needle.  Once again there was a small amount of pain, and this time a few drops of blood oozed out with it.  She taped a small piece of cotton where the needle had been, and said she would be right back in about 10 minutes.

"See that wasn't so bad was it?" Sydney said."Only because I had a distraction" I said looking up at Sydney, she had been standing the whole time.  I let go of her hand, and she rubbed her pale fingers together, trying to bring blood back to them.

"Come sit down," I said patting my lap.  She laughed, but agreed. She sat her small body down on my legs, and leaned her head back onto my chest.  Suzanne walked back into the room carrying a juice box,  some biscuits and fruit snacks.  As if on cue my stomach grumbled, and the nurse handed the snacks to Sydney.  "Hey those are mine!" I said slightly annoyed.  She hopped off my lap, and held the snacks up in the air, but I was just tall enough to snatch them out of her fingers.  I sat back down and drank the apple juice in one big gulp, while i unwrapped the biscuit.  The biscuit was gone within 4 bites, and I opened the fruit snacks, dumping them into my mouth.
