17. Secrets

Muse was blasting out of the CD player; Ethan knew all the words to Supermassive Black Hole and Knights of Cynodia. I joined in with the words I knew but I sounded like a drowned cat so I let Ethan’s husky voice echo through the black jeep.

The road got bumpier as we got closer into town. I barely saw the town when I came with Joan because of the rain. It was a big town, with shops lined along the streets. Some of the kids from Loving Friends were walking around the streets. In groups, giggling girls with shopping bags grasped in their hands, boys eyeing up some of the local girls.

There were no big companies here, but I don’t know many of the companies from America. There were no Marks and Spencer’s, Next, Topshop and Primark. These were the main shops me and mum went around when I was younger.

I saw a Wal-Mart as we looked for a parking space. The streets got quieter as we drove along the bumpy road. We finally found a space and Ethan backed into it.

He was out the door in a flash and opened my door. He lifted me out and shut the door behind me.

‘Let’s go.’ He grabbed my hand and led me into the main part of the town centre. There were a few clothes shops, a flower shop and some food stores.

We found a salon and stepped in. The bell jingled as a boisterous woman came over.  She had mad curly hair, small cat like glasses perched on her nose and bright red lipstick. She was wearing a leopard print dress and black chunky heels. Bangles filled her arms up to her elbow and she had a rose tattoo on her ankle. Wow!

‘Hello Hun. How can I help you?’ Her mouth split into a huge grin. A bit scary actually. She was like a Cheshire cat.

‘Erm, please can I have a haircut.’ I gestured towards my hair, which I sorted into a bun in the car, to look presentable.

‘Okay dear, I’m Cath.’ She thrust a manicured hand towards me, I took it, she shook it vigorously. Nearly pulling my arm out of its socket.

Ethan let go of my arm as Cath led me towards a chair. The salon was fairly busy with locals getting their daily do.

Cath hustled around grabbing bottles and scissors from cabinets dotted around the place. She came over and placed everything down in front of me.

‘So dear,’ Cath started as she pulled my hair out of the bun and rustled it. ‘How short would you like it?’

She measured my hair against my face.

‘Erm just a trim please.’

She snipped at my hair here and there. My hair started to get shorter and shorter. Until I coughed and she took the hint and started to measure it out.

She curled my hair and finally let me see the finishing hairstyle.

It was just above my shoulders and the curls looped around my face. It was nice actually, it suited me.

I payed and went outside to meet Ethan. He was leaning against the window staring nowhere. He finally met my eyes and they gleamed.

‘Wow!’ Ethan said walking over grabbing my hands.

‘What? Oh no it looks horrible doesn’t it?’ My head dropped and my eyes started to blur.

‘No, no it’s great. It makes you look sexy.’ He lifted my head and stared into my eyes. I lit up and smiled at him.

‘Where to now then?’ I asked.

‘Well I’m starving, so would you like to go for some food?’ I nodded, my tummy grumbled.

Ethan led me into a small dinner called Dinner Dave. We found a spare table in the corner of the dinner. A smiley teenager came over and got our orders. Ethan ordered a Chilli Dog and a big Coke. I ordered a small cheese burger and a bottle of water.

Our food came and we tucked in, it was great. It was better than the burgers we ordered when Mum, Dad and I were having a movie night.

The waitress came and received our plates and we payed. She left and Ethan turned to me.

‘So, earlier on. What happened?’ I knew he had been waiting to ask this question.

‘Erm, nothing like I said.’ He didn’t believe me.

‘I know Jamie said something. When I came you looked scared. You can tell me.’ He pleaded.

I sighed. ‘Well she, well erm,’ I stuttered. Ethan looked impatient. ‘Okay, she said about seeing us you know in the stream,’ I blushed. ‘Then well she started saying weird stuff....about you.’

Ethan’s face hardened it scared me. It twisted into a frown. ‘What did she say about me?’ He snapped.

‘Well, erm,’ I stuttered. ‘She said about you being very warm skinned, warmer than mine. About your eyes being so dark and the shadows underneath them,’ I paused for breath and noticed Ethan’s face had got redder and redder. ‘About your hard muscles and your amazing looks.’ I looked down at my hands with embarrassment. I looked back up to see Ethan shaking.

‘I need a moment. I will be back in a sec.’ He hurried out of the Dinner into the street. I saw him run down one of the alleys.

I looked around the Dinner; it was set in the 50’s. A jukebox was in the opposite corner from our table blasting out Jailhouse Rock. There was a bar in the middle with bar stools surrounding the surfaces. Smiling people took peoples orders from different tables. Still no Ethan.

I think I must have counted all the squares on the floor when finally Ethan walked in and sat down. His face was less red and he wasn’t shaking. He put a forced smile on. ‘Sorry about that. Just needed a moment.’ I nodded. ‘So, carry on.’

‘Erm okay, she didn’t really say anything else after that. Just.’ I paused.

‘Just what?’ Ethan asked his voice got a tiny bit louder.

‘Well she asked me what I think you are. I didn’t know and she called me and idiot. Then you arrived, and well you know the rest.’ Ethan was rubbing his temple with his fingers. He was taking deep breaths and his eyes were closed. ‘What’s wrong?’

He looked up surprised. ‘Nothing I’m fine,’ He paused his voice was straining. ‘So you have no idea at all then?’

I shook my head. ‘Nope, no idea...but you could tell me.’ I grinned. I really wanted to know. What was all this fuss about?

He smiled weakly. ‘Sweetheart I don’t think I can tell you. You will have to find out yourself.’

‘But you told Jamie straight away!’ I gabbled. His face turned redder then ever and he started to shake. The table wobbled and I had to catch the salt and pepper shakers. ‘I’m sorry. Calm down.’ His hand was on the table clenched. I placed my hand on his and started to rub my thumb against it. He seemed to calm down, a bit.

‘I’m sorry Kim. It was a mistake to bring you here with me. I can’t control my anger. This was a big mistake.’ He put his head in his hands. His nails dug into his skull.

‘Oh, sorry.’ I said sadly. I felt the tears building up again but I held them back. It would not help, not at this moment.

‘Don’t be sorry Kim. Until you find out what and who I am, you will understand what is happening.’ You could see the nail marks imprinted on his forehead.

‘Maybe we should get out of here.’ I said looking around at the busy dinner. He nodded and I grabbed his hand. W

We finally reached the Jeep. The ride home was silent no Muse and no singing. Or talking in fact. We reached the school as people were heading for their room inspections.

We walked up to our floor. We stopped outside my door. Ethan held my face in his hands. ‘Please, please try. I’m sorry I cannot tell you but it’s too dangerous for you.’ He kissed my forehead and walked to his room. His posture was slumped and he looked so sad. I need to find out what he is for him, for us.
