4. Green

I was woken next morning by a girl screaming from the girl’s bathroom. I joined the moving crowd, curious to see who it was. As I walked with the crowd to the incident I felt eyes burning into my skin. I just wanted to turn around and say ‘Do you mind!’

People had already arrived and were in hysterics. I arrived to find a young girl, about thirteen, clutching her hair. Bits of hair stuck out the colour of green. Her brown eyes were rimmed with tears about to overflow.

A bellowing shout came out behind us. Miss Trout. She bustled pasted us pushing people to the floor. She stood in front of the green haired girl. She turned round. Frothing at the mouth her blood red eyes bulging, about to burst out of her head.

‘WHO DID THIS?!?!’ Miss Trout bellowed.

We all stood frozen quiet. Daring not to move.

‘HMM! ANYONE? NO? WELL YOUR ROOMS ARE GOING TO BE SEARCHED!’ She was about to leave when a tall muscular boy stepped out of the crowd, in front of Miss Trout.

He spoke. ‘It was me.’ His voice was seducing it was deep and welcoming. It made my heart flutter.

Miss Trout looked into his eyes. They were the same height about 6ft.

‘Come here’ her crooked finger hooked him in. They were gone.

Whispers then shouts. A girl with ten or more piercings stepped towards the green haired girl.

‘I think it looks lovely. Goes with mine.’ Her green hair was wrapped in a towel from her early shower. She had an etched smirk on her face. She looked about fifteen. She turned on her heel and was gone.

Everyone headed back to their rooms. The green haired girl looked helpless. She stood in the middle of the corridor, getting pushed and laughed at. I felt pity for her. But what could I do. All I could do was go back to my room and hope she would be ok.

I decided to get ready. I put my hair in a scruffy fish plait and put some mascara on at my small desk in my cramped room. I slipped my comfy black jeans on and checked shirt and was ready. I had five minutes to spare until breakfast and decided to venture out to see if the young green haired girl was anywhere.

As the flow of children headed down to breakfast I searched the crowd for the girl but could not find her. I headed down to breakfast.

The hall was separate from the main building so we had to get escorted by two carers. The main hall was a prefab in the middle of a courtyard. It matched the main building moss circling the doors and windows.

Inside the hall there were a hundred tables with plastic chairs surrounding the tables. There were tables with juice and cereals spread across the room.

I sat down at a table with three girls and two boys soon to find out they were called: Lisa, Hannah, Sarah, Mike and Daniel. They questioned me where I was from and why I was here.

I couldn’t answer the last one. I just went its complicated and they left it there. They told me about themselves and warned me about some of the teachers.

‘Mr Grayson he is the Maths teacher he is brutal.’ Hannah said.

‘Yeah! Don’t mess with him.’ Sarah chipped in.

‘Mr and Mrs Jones is a married couple. He teaches English and she teaches Biology. They are the nicest teachers here.’ Mike added.

We all walked to first lesson, Biology. I’m actually looking forward to it with what Mike said. Maybe this will go well.

I came into the classroom to find the class nearly all sat down accept us. I noticed a few people, the girl from this morning who was covered in piercings and dye was used on the young girl. Also the boy who got taken away by Miss Trout. His dark eyes were searching the classroom. His midnight black hair blowing in the light wind from the open window.

‘Good morning. You must be Kim. I’m Mrs Jones and I am your Biology teacher.’ She had an airy voice and smile wrinkles around her eyes. Her hair was in a loose bun and she had flared out trousers on with a blouse.

‘As you can see everyone is in a seating plan. Let’s see where I can place you.’ She searched the classroom. There was only one seat left and it was next to that black haired boy. ‘I think you will have to go and sit next to Ethan.’ She pointed at the empty seat next to him.

I shuffled over to my seat my converse squeaking on the laminate floor making a loud noise. Making my cheeks burn up.

I placed my notebook and folder onto the table and took my seat. Ethan did not even look at me or say ‘Hi’. We listened about the discovery and uses of DNA. How we recognise our relations.

‘Right kids, with your partner next to you I want you to go and use the computers and study the theory of DNA. Off you go.’

Ethan and I went to the far corner computer. He clicked the computer on and we waited. We worked in silence as he logged in and opened up a word document. We sat awkwardly next to each other.

‘So are you going to type something’ Ethan asked.

I jumped. ‘Erm...okay.’ I stuttered.

I searched the keyboard for the right words. I went onto Google and typed DNA. Wikipedia opened up and I started to write.

‘I’ll type now.’ His hand brushed mine of the keyboard. A sudden rush went through my body and he felt it to. We touched and a thrill went through our body. What does this mean?

I met his eyes and his looked normal like this happened loads of time. He smirked and turned to the screen. The bell for next lesson rang and I stood up with the rest of students. I met up with Hannah and we walked to English together.

‘He’s gorgeous isn’t he?’ Hannah called out as we walked into the English corridor.

‘Who?’ I asked. I obviously knew who she was talking about but I wasn’t going to say.

‘Your partner silly!’

‘Oh!’I acted shocked luckily Mr Jones stopped Hannah from saying anything else.

Hannah is a pretty girl. She has auburn hair and her face is scattered with freckles. She is smaller than me. She is from the outskirts of New York and her mum could not look after her. When she was seven she got put into care. She has been in care all her life and she is not bothered about it not like me.

Mr Jones turned to me and show’s me to a seat at the back next to a tall freckled boy, soon to find out he was called John.

Ethan was not in this lesson but the pierced girl from this morning was. I found out her name this morning as Lisa gossiped about her. She was called Jamie but everyone calls her Babe. I don’t know why, but she does not suit it!

Jamie sat in front of me. When I am near her I feel a bad vibe from her. It’s weird.

English was boring the same things I learnt in England. Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet. We read a bit of the script and next lesson we will be watching the film.

Hannah and I met up with the others and found a space in the courtyard. We were watched from every exit by a teacher.  Miss Trout kept to herself over near the bleachers.

The young green haired girl walked into the courtyard no longer green but auburn like Hannah. Sniggers were coming out of some of the teens as she walked up to Hannah.

‘I’ve been in the nurse’s office all day. They washed my hair about ten times!’ She seemed happier now that she had gone back to her normal colour.

‘Alright are you better now?’ Hannah asked.

She nodded and walked off to find her friends.

‘Is she your sister?’ I asked.
