10. Babe

The room was small and boxed shaped, like mine. There was one window covered with thin black curtains. The floor was covered in clothes and shoes, again a bit like mine. The desk had various colognes scattered on, unused paper and bubblegum wrappers. His room had a strong smell. Not cigarettes but cigars. The musky smell nearly choked me. But also it smelled good. Weirdly...

Ethan stepped in and went to his desk. His had searched the top drawer soon to pull out a packet of crisps. He turned and smirked. ‘They aren’t that good at searching.’ I have not had my room searched yet. Em was telling me over lunch that they search our rooms every Sunday. Tomorrow, great.

He threw me the crisps and sat on his metal bed tapping a space next to him. I slid onto his bed. Opened the crisps and took one out. Everyone I ate Ethan examined me. His dark eyes concentrating on my mouth. My heart was racing. I put the packet down and put my hands on my knees.

‘Are you done?’ He asked as he stood up. I gave a small nod and he took the packet. He sat back down closer to me this time. We sat like this for five minutes. I made the first move.

‘Soooo... What do you want to talk about?’ I looked into his eyes. They were warm, warming my body up even though it’s nearly thirty degrees outside.

‘I don’t know. We can talk about you.’ He leaned back against the wall, his arms wrapped around his head.

‘Urm... Okay. What do you want to know?’

He thought for a while.

‘I want to know your past. Why are you here?’

Great. This is one question I have been trying to avoid these last few days. I thought a minute.

‘Well I guess like everyone else really. Parents abandoned me. That’s it really.’ That was the best I could do. But I know he would want more.

‘Yeah well I thought that but then no. You don’t seem that way. Like you have another story. But I just can’t fathom you out. It makes me curious. Like I need to know. Desperately.’ His eyes were facing forwards, looking in the distance.

‘I guess it’s too much of a long and boring story.’

‘We have time and I doubt it’s boring.’

‘It is though. I can’t really explain,’ I paused. ‘It brings back to many memories. Which I don’t want to talk about. Anyway what about you? Abandoned? Drug addicted parents?’

This question seemed to annoy him. His eyes glazed over. Looking away into the distance.

I nodded and left it there. I knew he did not want to talk about it. He won’t tell his story if I don’t tell him mine. I guess that’s where we are both the same, we both have disturbing memories that can’t be told.

Suddenly there was sharp rap at the door. Ethan shot up like a bullet.

‘Quickly! Hide in there!’ He whispered pushing me to his cramped wardrobe. I had no time to question when the door slammed shut. The wardrobe was cramped with clothes. Jackets draped over me. There was a slight gap of light at the bottom of the wardrobe.

The door opened. Someone stepped into the room creaking with the floor boards. It sounded like they had high heels on, a girl. But who?

I could just see out a gap in the door. A girl with green hair, facial piercings and a sweet sickly smile etched on her face. Jamie or as everyone calls her, Babe. She was dressed in a skin tight black dress. High black heels wrapped around her small feet. She was nearly the same height as Ethan.

Her hands were wrapped round Ethan’s waist. Coming closer and closer. My eyes burned watching.

‘What do you want Jamie?’ Ethan did not move from that position but his eyes were met in a deep frown.

‘Don’t frown baby,’ her fingers reached for his forehead. Stroking the lines with her manicured nails. ‘I wanted to come and see you. I’ve hardly seen you today.’

‘I’ve been busy.’ His eyes turned to my hiding spot in the corner of the room.

‘Doing what?’ She came in closer. Her face was inches from his.

‘Does it really matter?’

She looked into his eyes. ‘Of course it does.’ Her eyes looked back down to his chest.

‘Look. I was just out and about.’

‘You were with her. Weren’t you?’ Her frown was deadly.

He didn’t answer.

‘Look honey, I don’t were her coming and ruining our relationship.’ Relationship? He said he did not have a girlfriend. ‘I think you should stay away from her.’

‘It’s not up to you who I hang out with!’

‘Well if she ever hears me say this I hope she listens. She better back of my man or there will be trouble.’

I looked away burying my head into the clothes. How could he do this? Embarrass me. I will do as Jamie says. Stay away from him. Tears rolled down my cheeks, I felt daft, I looked daft and I am daft.

The door opened and closed. Jamie was gone. The wardrobe door opened. Ethan’s face was there. His eyes were misty not the normal colour. ‘Kim-

I pushed passed him and ran. Ran as far as I could go. I ran down the stairs out the door into the courtyard. I ran and ran. Until I was far out into the fields. I couldn’t go that far because there were huge gates surrounding the lot. I ran into the dark woods which were on the boarder of Loving Friends.

The oak trees towered over me. The leaves and twigs scratching at my bare skin. The ground crunched underneath my feet. I still had Ethan’s jacket on I threw it to the ground. Jumped on it a few times and ran on. I stopped in an opening in the middle of the forest. It was beautiful. There was a small stream running through. Fishes and tadpoles dotted around it. Rocks and flowers surrounded it. The grass was long and overgrowing. Up to my middle. It felt good blowing against my arms. My eyes were tired from sleep and tears. I searched and searched and found a small spot covered with thick grass and flowers. I slid of my shoes and settled into the made bed. Soon to fall into a deep sleep.

I was in the forest standing at the edge of the opening. Two people were in the middle. Wrapped around each other. Devouring each other. He looked up at me. His dark eyes sinking into my skin making me tremble. She looked up, lipstick smudged and a smirk spread over her face. They laughed in unison and sank back down. I was falling down and down. Swallowed by the ground. Suffocating me

I sat up sweating with fear. I looked around me no kissing couple. No-one just me. My eyes traced the trees around me. My eye caught some eyes staring back at me. Dark eyes shining in the moonlight. Not human. Animal. Dog?

They were gone in a second followed by a low growl. Definitely dog, but I could not be bothered to investigate. I fell back into a deep sleep.
