6. Mia's story

I lay there in the hospital bed hanging onto life by a thread. It's been two months since I got this rare disease. It makes me feel very sad as I can't play with my older brother Jason anymore. I really miss going out on family outings and eating mother's scrumptious meals. Unfortunatly I'm taking this treatment which makes me too weak to go out; let alone stand up and the meals that mother makes are to rich for me to consume. I aslo miss singing. I'm not a famous celebrity or anything but I am well known in my country. I remember singing on stages big and small but I always felt happy when I heard the amount of applause I got.

The thing that I miss the most is my garden. Oh, the garden; it gave me such delight. I am very lucky to live in a wealthy family so our garden is immense! I used to read in the sunshine, run through the long grass and gaze at the exotic flowers. Jason carries me to the graden every once in a while but it's not the same.

After 1 month of living with the terrible disease, things got a lot better. I was able to get out of bed but not for too long. I was able to have a small portion of mother's delicious foods which I could happily eat all day; every day. My family and I thought that I had a chance of living; so did the doctors who cared for me. Unfortunatly we were wrong. The disease hit me again but a lot harder this time.

The disease traps me like a cage from the joy of movement. Today, the hospital is letting me go; I will finally be able to go home. They did not tell me why but I already know. The doctors cannot do anything to keep me alive. I still have to take the treatment but it does not work. They want me to enjoy the rest of my days with my family. It was great. My brother played with me all day long and my parents and I talked of better times. At the end of the day, when the sun had gone to sleep, I watched the stars freckle the night sky with a bright shine. I never knew how beautiful they were. Suddenly a comet came flying past.
"Quick!" I croaked." Make a wish!"
"I wish you will getter better very soon so we can play again." whispered Jason.
After a while he gave me a piggy-back to my room because he knows how much I enjoy it and it was my bed time. He put me in my sof bed and tucked me in with my lilac blanket. He then gave me a kiss on the forehead which made me feel warm inside. He was about to leave when I called out:
"Jason, could you stay for a little longer?"
He came over to my bed and sat very gently at the edge.
"I'm going to miss you brother. You have been so kind to me today." I whispered.
"Don't say that. You're going to live; I know it." Jason said; tears coming to his eyes.
He sat there holding my hand tightly with his eyes closed as it was the only thing that will keep me alive.
After a while a drowsy feeling came over me which made me feel extremely sleeply. I felt myself slowly going into a deep slumber. Then the strange feeling whitened my vision and my brother's face faded away.

Jason sat there holding Mia's lifeless body in his arms; crying with great sorrow. Jason had lost something very dear to him; his sister. Mia lost the only thing that she had left; her life.
