13. Demons

The wait was long and hard, as I ran through all the worst scenarios in my head. I could just imagine the doctor coming out with a sad look upon his face, then telling me my worst nightmare: that my love, Harry, was gone forever.

As time drew on, the louder I noticed outside getting. Walking to the waiting room’s window, I took a peak at the grounds below. My mouth got wide as my eyes looked upon hundreds of screaming teens from below.

I knew Harry was famous, but to see this? I was overwhelmed.

Walking slowly back to my previous seat, I put my headphones in and blasted music.

Not realizing that I had drifted to sleep, my shoulders were shaken, startling me awake. “Harry?” I quickly groggily said, taking the headphones off of my ears.

My heart dropped, as a voice that did not belong to Harry spoke sadly, “No, love, unfortunately I’m not Harry.”

Looking up at the British boy that I had met yesterday evening, I asked softly, “Have you heard from the doctors?”

There was a long pause, as I searched Louis’ face for an answer. He shook his head no. Tears swelled in his eyes as he said regretfully, “The boys are all flying in… We are expecting the worst this time.”

Louis’ words stabbed at my heart. Without Harry I had nothing, was nothing, was nobody. I was sitting here hoping all along that Harry would be okay, but Louis brought me back to reality.

We sat in silence, as Louis words hug in the air. I repeated them over and over in my head. We are expecting the worse… We are expecting the worse… We are expecting the worse…

I had to distract myself from this before I go crazy. “So,” I said slowly, “When are the rest of the boys expected?”

Louis, who had taken a place at the window, looking upon what I assumed to be their fans, looked at me. A kind smile lightened his face, but you could see the sadness in his eyes. He shook his head a frown then replaced his smile. “In the next thirty minutes.”

I nodded. I had to keep the conversation rolling. “You had mentioned earlier that ‘you are expecting the worst this time…’, what do you mean? This time?”

My eyes searched his face, as he his eyes looked everywhere but mine. “Harry may not have told you this, but he has done something like this before.” Louis voice was soft, and thick of emotion.

A lump rose in my throat at the thought of Harry trying this before. I looked up at the ceiling tiles to stop any tears that threatened to fall. Before I could ask any further questions, Louis kept on, “It’s the reason he’s on break from the band. Management couldn't handle any more of his psychotic breakdowns when all of our careers were on the line.”

So many thought were running through my head. I’m pretty sure you could see my wheels turning if you were staring directly at me.

Finally, I asked the question that had been nagging my brain. “How did he attempt the first time?”

Louis shook his head, looking at his hands that were clasped together on his lap. I took that as if he didn't want to speak of it. “You don't have-“

He cut me off, “No… No, you should know.” Louis paused, closing his eyes and looking at the ceiling; then proceeded, “He has always taken criticism badly. And when we went on our worldwide tour, the hate on him only increased. Harry got called names, and on one concert, someone had thrown a crumpled picture of all of us at Harry. On the picture, someone had drawn a red ‘x’ over Harry, and had written the word ‘die’ all around it.”

Louis looked at me with sad eyes, before continuing. “That’s when it all started. The self-hate: skipping meals, blade cutting, excessive drinking, drugs…”

He thought for a long second. “I didn't see what was actually going on until I had seen his wrist and his protruding ribs. I took it upon myself to confront him, but he went crazy. Even threw things at me. Let me just add this: it hurt to see my best friend like that. He needed help; I couldn't just wait around and watch my best mate slowly kill himself and everything he had built up.”

“It took almost his life to make me realize, that it was either have him mad at me and hate me temporarily, or him die and lose him forever. That night when he slit his wrist to the bone, I was the one who found him.” A tear steamed down his left cheek. “I walked in his hotel room, and found him lying in a crimson pool of blood. Harry had lost so much blood, no one expected him to make it. Not to mention his skipping meals, his nutrition was horrid.”

This was all too much to take in. I could barely imagine this side of Harry doing this; it was so…so unexpected!

“When he awoke in the hospital, management made sure they were there. They gave him a deal, which ended up being more of a plea bargain: either take a few months off and calm himself down; get enrolled in a rehabilitation/recovery center; or don’t even think twice on coming back to the band.”

Louis smile, giving a slight chuckle, which sent chills down my spine. “As you can tell he chose the first one… And well look around.” He paused briefly. “This is where it landed him… yet again.”
