A Slave

A historical fiction set in 1712 in The Slave Trade.

Joseph is a young Englishman who is chosen to travel to Africa to trade goods for living people, who will eventually be used as slaves in America. He is happy to be there- it has always been his dream to travel to lands as foreign as this.
He has no negative feelings about taking humans to forced labor in a distant place, until he meets Cela, a nineteen year old negro.
This is the story of how a life with everything he could ever want clashes with the one with everything taken away from.

5. The Boat That Rocked

Crack!

I winced as Father's whip sliced into my back.

"I told you not to interfere with the slaves! Didn't I?" Silence.

Crack!

"ANSWER ME!" he bellowed.

"Yes..." I squeaked. "Yes, you did...

"Good boy!"

"But sir..."

Crack!

"Don't you answer back, boy!"

"I will! That girl was..."

Crack!

"Sir, I LOVED HER!"

Silence.

There, I admitted it! I can't take it back now, can I? I just told my father that I was in love with a slave-to-be!

"These people are NEGROS!" he shouted. "How can you be...be so INCONSIDERATE?"

"Just because they're negros!"

Crack!

"DIDN'T THE BIBLE SAY THAT MEN SHOULD NOT HAVE FOREIGN WIVES?"

I could say no more. He was right. I had rejected the Word of God. He whipped me several more times, until I felt my own blood oozing across my body.

"There! I hoped you learnt your lesson, boy!" Then he left me in the cabin on my own.

Suddenly I heard thunder outside. The boat shook. I line of lightning ripped through the clouds, then rumbling again. Then the waves took control. It started to rain heavily & the boat rocked. Hard. I heard screams & crying below deck. I tried to shut it out, I really did, but the knowledge that Cela was down there, helpless, hopeless. I wept for over an hour, for I knew that I could do nothing about it.
