34. A slow recovery

Just to say, I'm sorry I haven't updated as often as before, it's just I haven't had the time what with doing a programme called NCS (National Citizen Service). Speaking of which, If you're 16 or 17 you should definitely do it! :D Anyway, on with the story...

6 months later

I fumbled in the darkness, grappling at the curtain. Pulling it aside I shifted across the bed and peered into the world outside. My sight grew blurry but this irregularity soon dissipated once my eyes had adjusted to the new found bright light. A smile crept onto my face.

"Morning" I whispered to myself. Slowly and begrudgingly I withdrew from the warm depths of my bed and slithered over to the bathroom. My hands reached the sink where I pulled myself forward. I lifted my gaze to the mirror above it and stared hard and long at the reflection. Tuffs of hair spouted up on my head messily and grew more fervently where the skin wasn't so scarred. My skin was healing but it looked as if it would never be as smooth as before. My mind suddenly whirred from seeing myself in this state. I rooted my hands firmly to the edges of the sink before noticing a note beside the mirror. I removed the pin holding it down. Clasping the note in my hand, I unfurled the contents of which revealed a heavy pack of pictures. I flicked through each and every one, cringing at the same time. A fire. A hospital. Medical equipment. The boys. Then finally a picture of myself in a hospital bed, completely and irrevocably damaged. Memories flooded back and all I could do was stand and remember the pain and torment of my past. A living nightmare I hope never to experience again.

I wrapped the note back around the pictures before pinning the note back up again securely where it once had been placed. Then with one last glance at the mirror I backed away into the recess of my room.

After leaving the shower I pulled on a fresh white T-shirt and burgundy jogging bottoms before making my way downstairs. The scent of frying bacon filled the air. My senses came alive and all I could think of now was food. I whisked downstairs, nose in the air like a dog, caught on the scent of an intruder. In the kitchen a pan of bacon was cooking on top of the oven. I stared at it longingly, oblivious to the array of food already lining the table. Almost out of my will my hand reached towards the bacon. Before I could pull it away however, a hand had already clasped my elbow protectively. Twisting around I found Liam staring down thoughtfully at me. The look in his eyes held a conversation that needn't have been spoken.

"I'm good now Liam, thank you"

He gave a stout smile before making his way towards the table. I gave a long gasp in excitement. All manner of foods lined the table, including such delicacies as cakes, biscuits, meats and most importantly, Nandos. Half-jogging to the table, I laughed passing my eyes over the food.

"Haha, Liam what's all this about?" I held a huge smile as I stared at him.

"Well-" But before he could finish his sentence several people burst through the door. Walking through the doorway, one by one I identified them. Harry, Louis, Eliana, Zayn and Perrie. My heart leaped for joy.

"Niall" I turned back to face Liam.

"We wanted to celebrate good health Niall. Today was the day of the fire. Not only are we lucky to have you here with us but also Eliana since both of you suffered a trauma."

"Um...Liam" Zayn suddenly chipped in.

"Well, I think it best to say now rather than later." He sneaked a glance over at Perrie, reaching for her hand and entwining his fingers in hers. "Perrie and I...we're getting married"

There was a moment of silence before the room burst into frantic congratulations. Tears welled in my eyes and for the first time since the accident, they were for joy. I ran over to both Perrie and Zayn, embracing them in a deep hug.

The rest of the day passed by quickly as we conversed in recent events. I ate most of the Nandos when no one else was up for eating anymore. It gave me comfort to be able to enjoy things as they once had been.

"So has everything been alright with Eliana?" I began.

"Oh, Niall, I forgot to say," Louis shouted across the table. "Everything has worked quite well for the moment, the only thing is that now she thinks she's called Eleanor so that's her point in telling it her differently when she won't believe you" He said as if it was the most coherent thing to say, before laughing softly to himself.

"Hm, Eleanor. Not a bad name actually"

As I pulled out of each conversation I allowed myself to unfocus from the world and watch my friends as they laughed and joked around. I mulled over the recent events and how not only had they been people I could have a laugh with, but they were also supportive and protective over me when I was in desperate need of them. I really was indebted to these people sitting right before me.

"I love you guys" I said, reaching out for a group hug as the whole table rised from their seats and ran to my comfort.
