15. Feathers and Rain

Chapter 15

Aspen’s P.O.V

Friday morning was awkward. The only one who was really talking to me was Liam, and even then they were nothing but a few curt words of acknowledgment. From what I saw Zayn was in the bathroom for at least an hour. He was always the one who took the longest to get ready even surpassing my forty- five minutes. I sat on the living room chair anxiously bobbing my knee up and down while Liam and Harry were preparing brunch in the kitchen. I needed to talk to Zayn and if he wanted to just sulk like he was doing before he showered I would slap the beejezus out of him because it’s been four days and he hasn’t said a word concerning what happened when we kissed. And there’s no point in talking to Harry I don’t even know if he told Liam or Zayn so I’m here in the middle.

I slowly got up and walked to the kitchen with my hands folded behind my back and propped myself on the kitchen counter. “Is there anything I can help with?”

Harry looked up from the eggs he was beating and I noticed the bit of flour that was smudged on the corners of his mouth. I blushed just thinking of our encounter last night where we kissed and he smirked upon realizing my thoughts, “I think we’re all set here, right Liam?”

Looking up from the skillet in front of him and walking to the fridge opening it and glancing at it precariously he said, “I actually think we might need more of the parsley stuff and we have no milk.”

“Do we really need all of that?” Harry groaned.

Liam got up and grabbed his jacket and keys, “If you want a good omelet yes.” As he got to the door he turned and looked over his shoulder at me, “Do you want to come to the store with me Aspen?”

“Yes,” I sighed and hopped off the counter and almost ran to the door.

Almost in step with Liam I felt a familiar grip on my wrist, I whipped my head back and saw Harry staring at me intently with those teal eyes of his, “Can we talk about last night please?”

I looked in Liam’s direction and saw him almost getting towards the elevator, “I-I” I began to sputter, “Later please,” I pleaded.

He almost smiled and patted his hand over mine, “Whenever you’re ready.” And with that I raced back towards Liam and got in the elevator with him smiling yet feeling my stomach turn inside out at the thought of talking to Harry.

Getting into Liam’s car he revved the engine and as he pulled out he put his hand on the back of my seat, and with only that I got a wave of his cologne. “Are you wearing cologne?” I stifled a giggle.

His face turned pink, “Uh well yea, I mean don’t I always?”

“I don’t remember smelling cologne on you when you were sleeping on me the other day,” I smiled as he started getting out of the driveway.

He cleared his throat and didn’t meet my glance, “Did you just admit to smelling me?”

I laughed out loud and swatted his arm, “Don’t try to change the subject!”

He chuckled, “Okay okay Aspen, yes I’m wearing cologne but only because I thought we were going to go out today.”

I shook my head and leaned back in his black leather seat, “If you say so…” The rest of the ride was only five minutes and as soon as he parked I saw him put his hood up. I tilted my head to the side, “Why are you putting your hood on? It’s only a little drizzle.”

“Well I’d rather not people recognize me, especially since I’m with you.”

I furrowed my eyebrows, “What’s wrong with being with me?”

Noticing my confused expression he patted my shoulder and laughed, “Nothing Aspen, there’s nothing wrong with you, I just prefer you not get publicized like the way Harry half-mindedly did.”

“Why are you Zayn trying so hard to do so though?”

He got out of the car and before I could reach for the door handle he opened it for me and took my hand to help me out. I smiled and took his hand, “Thanks.”

His face lit up at my gratitude, “Your welcome, but let’s talk about this some other time, yes?”

I exhaled and shrugged my shoulders, “I guess so.”

Liam grinned and we walked into the grocery store, grabbing a shopping cart as we passed the entrance. There were few people in here as it was a Friday morning and besides the dinging coming from the cash registers it was pretty silent.

“So what is it we need exactly?”

Liam walked towards the produce aisle, “Parsley, milk, and I don’t know whatever else you want.”

I snatched a bag and picked some parsley closing it shut and placing it into our cart. It was a rather awkward situation being here with Liam, I guess maybe things were still tense between us since the party, maybe he didn’t really forgive Harry or me after the kiss. “Are we okay Liam?”

He turned to me and cocked his head to the side to follow him towards the dairy section. “Yea why wouldn’t we be Aspen?”

“I don’t know things have been weird at the house, I feel like everyone’s avoiding me.”

Liam chuckled, “Trust me it’s not you it’s the rest of us. We’re all just a little…tense I guess you could say, about the fact that you’re a girl living with us, because it’s always been just us boys.”

“It wasn’t like that before,” I muttered under my breath.

After getting the milk I stepped onto the junk food aisle, Liam raised his eyebrow at me as if challenging me. I walked over to the chips and grabbed three bags along with two bars of chocolate, gummy worms and two bottles of Dr. Pepper. I smirked at his amused face and we walked to the cash register. “Are you always such a fatty?” He questioned me.

I flashed him a smile and nodded eagerly, “Pretty much!”

He shook his head and proceeded to pay for all of our stuff, I put my hand out to pay for it all but he shooed my hand away, “As long as I get to see you eat all that stuff, it’s on me.” Then winked as he gathered all the bags then brusquely stopped at the door.

“Well what are you waiting for?”

“Rain,” He scowled at the cloudy afternoon sky that was cool iron and menacingly gray.

I tugged him at his elbow as I kicked the door open, “Then we better make a run for it!” I pulled him outside with me as the rain came pouring over our shoulders drenching our clothes and hair. He attempted to go to my side to open the door for me but I shook my head and yelled, “Now’s not the time to be a gentleman, just go!”

He dashed to his side and went inside the car, I found myself laughing in spite of the fact that my makeup was probably running and my hair was a matted mess. Liam however looked just as perfect as ever with his hair only plastered to the sides and his white shirt giving me an excellent view of his six-pack. I gulped and my laugh died with it.

“Don’t you look all cute with your hair all messed up?” Liam ruffled the top of my head as he backed out of the parking lot.

I scrunched my nose, “Not as cute as you! You’re one of those people that are more suited for the rain.”

He just smiled yet it seemed forced somehow. But I ignored it and turned on the heater then tried to comb out my tangled hair with my fingers. I flinched as a specific knot refused to be released from its hold. Still driving Liam took my hand away from my hair and set it down on my lap, “You’re beautiful Aspen, so don’t worry about being put together all the time.” I opened my mouth to protest but he interrupted me, “And don’t ask if I mean it, because you know I do.”

I blushed and looked down at my hands in defeat as we drove into the parking structure. We got out together and ran for the building’s door. I felt Liam stop me and say something but through the sound of the rain and the thunder I shook my head and yelled, “What?”

He shook his head and leaned to say something in my ear, “Can I kiss you?”

Kill me in my sleep. Do I say yes? Do I just turn away and head back into our flat? I don’t know who I liked and it was killing me on the inside. Zayn was such a sweet guy and Liam’s intentions seemed genuine. As for Harry, that was for me to figure out much later. Does this make me a harlot? What if they all liked me? Did I even do anything to lead them on? Well besides the whole Zayn thing because that was real. I did like Liam, he was such a nice guy and was always there for me…

I nodded without thinking and I saw his face redden as he wrapped his arms around my waist pulling me in then placed a feather light kiss on my lips. It was different kissing Liam, kind of like kissing a friend. Did it feel wrong? No. I felt tingles on my fingertips all the way down to my toes. Liam’s jacket was soaked and even with the rain around us it felt oddly warm to be around him. The rain grazed my cheek as it fell in spatters across my face and hair. But Liam’s lips changed all of that. He kissed my lips and my cheeks and my forehead and it felt like whispers, one second it was there and the next it was gone. It was sweet I guess one could say. But he stopped and pulled away from me his back facing me.

“I’m so sorry Aspen,” I heard his voice say as coldly as the atmosphere around us.

I felt the familiar stinging in my eyes and pushed them away, “I’m sorry too.” We got into the elevator both of us quiet and resigned. And when we finally got the apartment, Liam without fail opened the door for me and in there I saw Zayn and Harry seated in the living room their faces hard with their pupils dilated and Harry had his arms crossed tightly in front of him.

They knew. Of course they knew. Finally after four days of us not speaking Zayn looked up at me, his eyes softening a little. But just a little. “We need to talk.”
