32. Wedding Day 1

‘Soo, someone got herself knocked up,’ Sophie said, smirking. She was sitting on the bed and was drinking white wine.

‘I’m not pregnant,’ I calmly replied, looking myself in the mirror. I was in my wedding dress. It was corseted, my shoulders were bare, and layers of fabric flowed from my hips down to my ankles. It was all white apart from a pink ribbon which was wrapped under the breasts. I was wearing silk white gloves too. My hair was in a messy updo. I look quite pretty, I thought, tilting my head to the side.

‘Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?’ Mina asked, eating a cupcake. She could eat whatever she wanted and not ever get fat. Ever! I hated her for that.

‘I’m not pregnant,’ I repeated, putting my hands over my stomach. I had my back to them. I took deep breaths in and out, and again, in and out. The wedding was in half an hour.

‘Can you imagine if they’re twins!?’ Gemma asked, clapping.

‘I’m not – ’ I began again but Eleanor came in the room and pressed her back against the door. Her cheeks were a deep shade of pink and her hair was a mess.

‘Where were you?’ Gemma asked. ‘You disappeared like half an hour ago!’

‘I was in the toilet,’ Eleanor replied, shrugging and playing it cool.

Mina and Sophie looked at each other and giggled before Sophie asked, ‘Did Louis happen to be there too?’

Eleanor smiled brightly. ‘Yeah, he kind of was…’

‘Tell us everything!’ Gemma said and they gathered around her.

I rolled my eyes at my four bridesmaids. They were not doing a very good job at supporting the bride, I thought, but at least they had stopped bugging me about this pregnancy thing. I mean, pfft, I wasn’t pregnant. I couldn’t be. I was not!

There was a knock on the door and when Liam walked in, my heart skipped a beat. He looked at me, touched his stomach and let out a deep sigh. His eyes were so sad. He was wearing a black suit, a white shirt and a skinny black tie. ‘Can I talk to you? Please,’ he said and I nodded, ‘Of course.’

Sophie cleared her throat, asking for attention. ‘As your bridesmaids, we don’t think this is such a good idea,’ she said.

‘As the bride, I demand that you get out, now,’ I told her and the four of them quickly got up.

‘Pregnancy hormones kicked in pretty fast in this one,’ I heard Sophie telling the others as they walked out of the room. Liam and I were alone now.

Liam moved closer. ‘How much would you hate me if I threw you over my shoulder and took you away right now?’ he asked. He was rather serious.

‘I can’t say that I would appreciate it,’ I replied.

He chuckled and looked at his feet for a moment. Then, he lifted his eyes up. ‘I’ve done a lot of stupid things to come between you and Harry and I’m sorry for all the troubles I’ve caused,’ he said with his hands in his trousers’ pockets. I was quiet and he went on, ‘I guess you’ve made your decision and I should respect that, even if it hurts more than I thought it would.’

‘I love Harry,’ I said but somehow I hoped that there was a way I could tell him that I loved him too.

Liam nodded before he asked, ‘Can I at least have a hug?’

I smiled and wrapped my arms around his neck. He hesitated before he wrapped his own around my waist. He held me as close as it was humanly possible and touched my shoulder with his lips, softly kissing it.

‘We’re crossing the line again,’ I whispered.

‘I know,’ he replied, sighing.

My mom came in the room and we stepped away from each other.

‘Hello, Mrs. Boone,’ Liam awkwardly said, gluing his hands to his sides.

‘Please, call me Penelope, dear,’ Mom told him, smiling. Then, she calmly informed me, ‘Bessie, James’ running a little late. Actually, he’ll probably miss the whole wedding. But he will be here for the reception.’

That was so typical of my little brother. He was so irresponsible.

‘B-but, he was supposed to give me away to Harry,’ I said.

‘I know, darling, but he won’t be here to do that,’ Mom replied.

‘Oh no, oh no, oh no,’ I panicked, hyperventilating.

‘I can give Bess away to Harry,’ Liam volunteered, shrugging.

‘What!?’ I asked, turning to him. Was he serious!?

‘Oh, that is very nice of you, Liam,’ Mom said and I narrowed my eyes at her, wondering if she was really that ignorant. She probably knew everything. She always did. ‘I’ll let everyone know,’ she added, leaving the room.

‘What-are-you-doing!?’ I asked Liam through my teeth, hitting him on the arm, and he laughed, amused. Then, he grabbed my arms and shook me a little.

‘Bess, relax. I’m only trying to help. Honest,’ Liam promised, looking into my eyes. Did I believe him? Of course not! How could I? After everything the two of us had gone through. He forced me to sit down on the bed, saying, ‘Please calm down. All this stress can’t be good for the baby.’

‘But I’m not pregnant!’ I cried.

‘Whatever you say, love,’ Liam humored me, patting my head as if I was a puppy. The four bridesmaids came back into the room.

‘It’s time, Bess,’ Mina said, squealing a little.

‘No, it’s not,’ I objected, shaking my head back and forth. I couldn’t feel my legs.

‘I just talked with Harry. He’s a total eye candy today,’ Sophie said and bit her lip, daydreaming for a moment. Then, she pointed at the door and ordered me, ‘If you don’t get your arse out there right now, I swear I’ll go marry him.’

I breathed in, standing up, and when Liam offered me his arm, I took it. He put his hand over mine and I felt a little better. This is it, I thought, as we all walked out of the hotel. It was an outdoor wedding and even though it was freezing cold outside, it wasn’t raining and the sky was beautifully blue with only a few puffy white clouds. We had agreed with Harry to invite only our closest friends and relatives, so it was an intimate ceremony of about 200 people. A few fans of the boys had gathered too but they were watching from a distance, respecting that this was a private moment. Some of the girls were crying but some others gasped when they saw me and I heard them say, among other things, ‘She looks so pretty. I love her dress. And her hair! She’s so lucky.’

I really was. Liam and I stopped at the beginning of the white carpet. Harry was waiting for me on the other end of it. Louis, Niall and Zayn were standing on his left side. All the guests were looking at me but the only thing on my mind was that I was only a few steps away from marrying Harry. When we began walking down the carpet, Liam whispered in my ear, ‘This will hurt me more than you’ll ever know.’
