I had fallen asleep with my laptop open, like every night since the day Harry went away. It’s been two weeks now. Sophie barged in my room, turned on the lights and asked in her high, screechy voice, ‘Have the boys signed in yet?’

She was brutal. ‘What time is it?’ I asked still lying on my stomach and refusing to wake up.

‘Five in the morning, which means it’s midnight in New York,’ Sophie said and when she jumped on the bed, I nearly fell out. I wanted to kill her. I opened my eyes only to glare at her. ‘Go fix yourself!’ she then ordered me. ‘Harry must not see you like this. You’re a total mess!’

I sat up, yawning but when I saw that she was wearing a pretty revealing nightie, I scolded, ‘Sophie, why are you doing this? You know Zayn has a girlfriend.’ They had been flirting every night on ooVoo.

‘Well, he has been leading me on, hasn’t he?’ she said in her always posh manner and I opened my mouth to argue but I couldn’t. It was true. Zayn had been leading her on from the start.

Harry finally signed in and called me instantly. I gasped, jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom.

‘As if you can fix all that now,’ Sophie shouted at me before answering Harry’s call.

‘Oh, hi, Sophie. Where’s Bess?’ I heard Harry say.

‘She just had a shower,’ Sophie lied. ‘She’s right here but she’s in a towel. She can’t decide what to wear.’

‘Ah, you’re killing my mate here, Sophie,’ Liam said, chuckling and I shouted from the bathroom, ‘Sophie, shut up!’

I quickly put pink lipstick on, mascara and eye pencil, and ran back into the bedroom. I sat on the bed and the minute I saw Harry’s face, I sighed, feeling calm and warm all over. ‘Hi,’ I smiled, staring at his face. He looked a little flushed.

‘I think I’m a little disappointed,’ Harry said. Liam was sitting right next to him.

‘Why?’ I asked, worried.

‘Because if I were there we would have showered together,’ Harry replied, half smiling and I blushed, tucking a lock of hair behind my ear.

‘Where are the rest of the boys?’ Sophie asked.

‘They’re all talking with their girlfriends,’ Liam replied and went on, kind of sad, ‘I’m suddenly the lonely old man who tags along with all the couples.’

‘Don’t say that, Liam,’ I told him and at that moment I really wanted to hold and comfort him.

‘Oh,’ Sophie said and I looked at her, realizing how heartbroken she must have felt. Zayn had chosen to talk with his girlfriend instead with her. ‘I’d better go get ready for work,’ she then said, getting up. ‘Don’t be too long. You know Mike hates it if we’re even a minute late,’ she told me and left the room.

‘Argh, Mike!’ I complained, turning to the boys. ‘That guy hates me. Ever since he found out about my relationship with you guys, he does everything in his power to make my life miserable. He has me going at work from 8 in the morning until 8 in the evening and he doesn’t leave me a minute out of his sight.’

‘I’ll call him,’ Harry and Liam said unison. They looked determined.

‘No, you won’t because I really want this job,’ I told them.

‘What do you mean he doesn’t leave you out of his sight?’ Harry asked, jealous and protective.

‘I don’t like the sound of this either,’ Liam added, papa Payne coming out of him.

‘He has me doing things for him all day long,’ I replied, miserable. Harry and Liam looked at each other. They were angry, but before they could say anything, I asked, ‘Did you boys go anywhere tonight?’

‘We went at this bar,’ Harry replied, moving his hands in front of the screen. He always did that when he was talking. ‘It was nice.’

‘The five of you?’ I asked.

‘Paul, too,’ Harry replied.

‘Were there any girls there?’ I asked.

Harry smiled, looking down. ‘There were a few.’

‘Did you talk to any of them?’ I went on with my little interrogation.

‘More like they talked to us, for autographs, photographs and stuff,’ Harry replied.

‘And stuff!?’ I asked in a higher voice than what I had intended and Harry half smiled, enjoying my little jealousy scene.

‘He was a perfect gentleman, Bess, I promise,’ Liam said, patting Harry on the back. ‘Anyway, I’ll leave you two alone,’ he added, getting up.

‘Can’t you stay a little longer?’ I asked him. I felt really close to him. Harry frowned a little.

‘I’m tired, love. Take care, yeah?’ Liam said, kissed his fingers and touched the camera.

When Liam left the room, Harry came closer to the screen and asked, ‘I have this family wedding when we return to the UK. Will you come with me?’

My eyes widened a little. ‘You mean as your date?’ I asked stupidly.

Harry chuckled before he said, ‘Yes, Bess, as my date. I want you to meet my mom and sister.’

‘Well, that’s not stressful at all,’ I joked before I swallowed with difficulty and asked, ‘Don’t you think we’re moving a little too fast?’

Harry fell silent and stared at me with his intense green eyes. He was disappointed, I could tell that much, but other than that, his face was unreadable.

‘I told you I wanted to take things slowly,’ I quickly added in my defense.

‘I think you’re afraid,’ Harry finally said coolly.

‘Afraid of what?’ I said irritably.

‘Afraid of committing to people who actually bloody care,’ Harry yelled a little and it was the first time I had heard him raise his voice that much.

Liam came into the room again. He only wore a blue pajama bottom. Bless his abs, I thought. ‘Hey, mate, sorry to interrupt, but I just wanted to show Bess this,’ Liam said and put his Woody doll in front of the camera.

‘You’re such a nerd, Liam,’ I said, laughing.

Liam smiled. ‘It’s my lucky charm.’

‘You’re adorable,’ I told him and he said, ‘Love you too, babe.’

‘Would you like me to leave you two alone?’ Harry asked, irritated.

Liam looked shocked and mumbled, ‘I-I’m sorry, mate, I didn’t mean to – ’

But I interrupted him. ‘Don’t apologize, Liam. Harry’s not himself tonight. But anyway I have to get ready for work. See you later,’ I said and ended the call before any of them could say anything else.

On my way to work, Harry texted me. He wrote, ‘I’m sorry about before. We can take things as slowly as you want. Don’t be mad at me. I’ll think of you every second of the day. Harry x.’ I read and reread his text, thinking about how heartbroken I would feel when he’d lose his interest in me, because eventually, he would.
